winds of 80mph are predicted to hit parts of Ireland and the UK over Friday and Saturday. I’m north wales and we’re looking at winds of around 72mph on Saturday according to the met office. Lots of local events have been cancelled. Anyone else potentially affected by the storm?

I have never driven in 70mph winds but I’m guessing it’s very much not advisable?

@Mirrorxxx eek! It will be memorable. Hope it’s peaceful.

IOMQuestions · 06/12/2024 18:17

On the IOM, ferries cancelled , the supermarket shelves are pretty bare. And it's lashing it down.

Tontu1 · 06/12/2024 18:23

Another one checking in from the West Wales coast. Postponed our works Xmas do for tomorrow afternoon, didn’t fancy crossing the Preselis!

Some rain here so far but the wind is definitely picking up.

Cheersmedears123 · 06/12/2024 18:26

We’re in the amber zone but a lot of people don’t seem to be bothered. We keep getting weather warnings and storms recently and then it’s not been bad in the slightest, so I’ll wait and see how it is when I look out of the window in the morning.

Would not want to be on an IOM ferry tonight! Wind is picking up a bit here, rain has started.

Jellykat · 06/12/2024 18:35

I agree, good decision @Tontu1 ...
DS2 crossed the Preselis yesterday to go to HavvieWest, that was bad enough.. and think it was only a Yellow warning!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/12/2024 18:36

Aww, it's nice to be back!

Nonaps. Can you get any torches, phones charged up? Do you have food in for tomorrow? We have a power cut kit that thankfully we haven't had to use since they worked on local power lines, putting them underground. (I'm in a yellow area, so will just be switching my walk with dh to Sunday and have made sure the bins are tucked safe and the neighbours won't get free christmas lights.)

Even in the red warning area, some people, who are sheltered from the winds, may wonder what the fuss is about while they are sheltered. It's like stepping out from the shelter of the calm side of a building into the full force of the wind.

If you are border amber/red, remember that the border isn't like a hard barrier against the worst of the wind, you are a little less likely perhaps to get the severe gales, but think of the border as being fuzzy edged.

Just seen theyve cancelled ALL bus services in my area for tomorrow!

I can hear the wind already picking up and its pissing down now..

Have just seen the same!

Tesco staff told me earlier that all deliveries for tomorrow have been cancelled.

DP has been told he doesn’t start work until 11 tomorrow.

Just packed up the garden furniture.

Wondering if I should have done the same. Assumed it would be too heavy to get blown about. Eek.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 06/12/2024 19:01

Just had an official warning on my phone about it - bloody scared me to death!!

exhaustedpigeon101 · 06/12/2024 19:01

I haven't read the whole thread but I thought I'd post this in case someone needs it.

With high winds there are a chance of power cuts, particularly if you are rural

If you need to, register on the priority services register for your area
(Elderly, children under 5, fridge medication, electrical medical equipment etc)

If you get a power cut, call 105 and it'll take you through to your distribution operator. If you live on a new build estate in particular, you may need to call whoever installed your electricity cables (likely tells you somewhere around where your meter it)

If you see any form of overhead cables that are low or on fire etc it goes without saying to report it and please stay clear.

Make sure you have plenty of torches / batteries available

Hopefully it won't be as bad as they're saying. Stay safe all!

Jesus Christ - that weather warning just scared the shit out of me!

Me too. I mean I get that people might need to be alerted if they haven't been aware but if you're already a bit keyed up that screech on the phone is a bit much.

Frozensnowflake · 06/12/2024 19:08

Are the weather warnings for the red areas?

TokyoSushi · 06/12/2024 19:09

Ah @OhYouBadBadKitten is back! We've missed you! Amber for us tomorrow, checking in.

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 06/12/2024 19:12

Oh, also - Wales gang, was your alert bilingual and then read out with terrible pronunciation?

Like when you use Google maps satnav in Wales. We were in Dwygyfylchi over half term and very much enjoyed her attempt at that.

Same here - we're only in a yellow zone, but geographically really not that far from the Bristol Channel.

It came through to both phones in the house, with a few seconds delay. Seriously confused us both.

Mine didn't get read out, or my sons. Just a horrible loud beeping!!

Inextremis · 06/12/2024 19:14

I'm on the west coast of Ireland, in Mayo - about half a mile from the ocean. We're under a red warning from 9 pm onwards - but right now it's eerily calm. Dinner has been cooked (we're all electric), I've downloaded something to watch on the tablet, we've got wood in for the fire, plenty of candles - we just have to hope the roof stays on. Will update later if we still have internet!

himyf · 06/12/2024 19:15

Just got the alert! Feel scared shitless now - I thought it was nuclear!

SlugsWon · 06/12/2024 19:15

Oh I'm in Gwynedd, rural, exposed, on the side of a bloody mountain 😭 we lose power all of the time so I have torches, candles, power bank, food, logs etc.. we've never lost water tho! Anyone in Gwynedd had a message about stocking up water? I have.not had an alert, but I'm in the red 😳

Frozensnowflake · 06/12/2024 19:16

I didn’t get an alert in amber zone

Red warning where I am in Ireland - high tide due at 8.45 I think. Sandbags ready and cars parked up the hill.

Living on the beach is great in August, not so much in winter 🤣
