winds of 80mph are predicted to hit parts of Ireland and the UK over Friday and Saturday. I’m north wales and we’re looking at winds of around 72mph on Saturday according to the met office. Lots of local events have been cancelled. Anyone else potentially affected by the storm?

I have never driven in 70mph winds but I’m guessing it’s very much not advisable?

You shouldn't risk it. It's not just a yellow warning of wind, it's a red warning. If something happens you have put not just yourself at risk but the people who have to come out and rescue you.

There are likely to be trees coming down, possibly blocking rivers, leading to floods etc. Tall vehicles will be at risk. Anything loose like roof tiles, signs, gazebos and trampolines will be blown around.

Stay home.

I'm in the south east where I thought it wasn't supposed to be so bad from what I read but we've had bluewater close their winter wonderland and a local Xmas market has been cancelled for the weekend

BestIsWest · 06/12/2024 17:18

I’m just west of Swansea. It’s ok here at the moment, lots of rain, a little bit of wind. Gusts of 74 forecast for tomorrow. I’m out in town tonight, beginning to think we should give it a miss.

BarbaraHoward · 06/12/2024 17:20

Really picking up here on the East coast of NI. DH out for a Christmas party tonight which I'm not loving the idea of.

BestIsWest · 06/12/2024 17:20

Just packed up the garden furniture.

Sadik · 06/12/2024 17:20

I'm also in north pembs, though not quite as far up as @lostinwales You can see the sea from my house, but thankfully we're a reasonable way uphill from it and sheltered by other houses.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/12/2024 17:32

Hello Smile I have mostly left MN, but occasionally peek in.
Please do not travel in the red warning area unless it is an emergency. They aren't issued often and mean genuine danger to life.

OYBBK posted on a thread at the end of last winter that she wouldn’t be around so much as she had a lot going on. Hope she’s okay. We’ll be missing her this winter!

BoudiccasBangles · 06/12/2024 17:33

Oh hurrah! Cross post with OYBBK! Good to see you Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/12/2024 17:39

I'm ok thanks. Life did get extraordinarily busy for a while and sometimes remains so.

Amber wind warning people, take a look at the Met Office warnings matrix. Low likelihood of very dangerous weather too. In these areas I wouldn't do anything outside, I would only go out for essential tasks. I'd certainly keep clear of roads lined by trees, or exposed fast roads and bridges.

If you are in amber and are vulnerable to power cuts or the red warning, be prepared for power cuts. In the case of the red area, I'd be prepared for prolonged cuts. Sorry this advice is so late.

(this is like the old days!)

lostinwales · 06/12/2024 17:40

Yay OYBBK! Good to see you, I have been enjoying remembering the feeling of knowing more about the last red weather warning here than the local authority and schools due to your excellent posting. I had every confidence in your predictions and you were totally correct. I promise we will not be leaving our house until the warning is back down to yellow or even just gone completely.

Really wishing I'd been down and supervised the builders packing up for the weekend at my 'proper' house (renting a different one whilst we renovate). I hope they had the sense not to leave anything that will fly away on the balcony. I did mention if they could tether the garden furniture but will they? Probably not, never mind, hopefully it won't go far. At least that house is sheltered by the valley somewhat.

Oh fab, hello OYBBK!
Good to see you again... glad you're still aboutSmile

I will do. My area is still amber but when I wrote this post, the red warning hadn’t been issued yet. I’m meant to be going to the cinema on Saturday afternoon so it’s definitely not anything worth risking any lives for!

It's kicking off now in County Cork 🌧💨

Frozensnowflake · 06/12/2024 17:46

How is the weather where you all are at the moment? Especially those on the coast? I’m north east wales and it’s rainy but that’s about it. Not much wind as yet. The kids football matches have been cancelled tomorrow (apparently all football games in wales are cancelled tomorrow). Hoping for a lie in in a house that still has power tomorrow morning!

NoNapsNowPlease · 06/12/2024 17:50

I’m north Devon coast just on the amber/red line.
Hmm… am thinking maybe I should have read about this sooner and prepared a bit?!

NoNapsNowPlease · 06/12/2024 17:51

@Frozensnowflake just started raining here but not much wind at all. Today was really warm/calm! (Though I spent most of it in soft play!)

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 06/12/2024 17:55

@lostinwales I know where you are too - how lovely!

We are coastal Ceredigion. <waves in a southerly direction>

OrangesCinammonIvy · 06/12/2024 17:57

@OhYouBadBadKitten I've missed you!
Your informative posts have kept me anchored during many a storm!!

justasking111 · 06/12/2024 18:02

North west Wales so expecting a battering. Shopped this morning, so hunkered down now. Torch, candles, log burner. All electric here so no cooking though.

Prayers for those at risk of flooding. Seen that in our area three times, never want to see it again.

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 06/12/2024 18:04

Another west wales here! Right on the Ceredigion/carms/pembs borders - very windy and wet….. let’s see what happens tonight!

Mirrorxxx · 06/12/2024 18:10

Just arrived in Anglesey for the weekend so a bit nervous

Dear Kitten it's lovely to see your name 😊 I was thinking about you recently and wondering how you are. I always enjoyed your weather threads.
