winds of 80mph are predicted to hit parts of Ireland and the UK over Friday and Saturday. I’m north wales and we’re looking at winds of around 72mph on Saturday according to the met office. Lots of local events have been cancelled. Anyone else potentially affected by the storm?

I have never driven in 70mph winds but I’m guessing it’s very much not advisable?

This storm can fuck right off now.

DawnAnn · 07/12/2024 21:38

I'm in Newcastle upon Tyne and it feels like the winds are getting stronger again.

AInightingale · 07/12/2024 22:04

Near Belfast and the gusts are getting very strong again, with a nasty howling noise. Is that because the storm is moving north towards Scotland and we're caught in it AGAIN? It's a persistent bastard, I'll give it that.

No, its heading eastwards. It's just a big old slow moving bastard and the pressure gradient is tight behind it.

Some fridge stuff might be ok outside.
Power cuts hit a large part of our community for most of the day too. I think they've all come back on tonight.

AInightingale · 07/12/2024 22:19

It's still leaving a lot of chaos in its wake. I read somewhere that a school in Castle Douglas, which is on Scotland's west coast, has had the roof blown clean off.

Oh wow. A school in my county has had a huge chunk of its roof come down. Very old building and lots of bricks are down. (Most schools are crumbling round me!) it’s closed on Monday and maybe longer. I won’t be surprised if more are closed due to flood damage but no mention from any other schools as yet. It’s still soooo windy here

Im in North Essex and the weather warning has now been extended to 6pm tomorrow night FFS

Rowgtfc72 · 08/12/2024 00:57

Still blowing away here on the east coast.
Supposed to be easing soon though.

BraveBlueDuck · 08/12/2024 06:43

Still very windy, 59mph gusts. I just heard a loud crash from one of the houses nearby, there's bits of tree everywhere and a few car alarms going off. I imagine a few people will be out searching for their bins and For Sale signs once the storm passes

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/12/2024 07:46

Winds will very slowly ease away through the day. Remaining quite blowy through the next couple of days, though nothing like we've seen. Do remain quite cautious around trees though, as some may still come down,

Jabtastic · 08/12/2024 09:12

Yes the wind is still howling here and isn't due to ease off until much later. It feels like a bit of a wasted weekend and our teen is getting cabin fever - as am I!

justasking111 · 08/12/2024 09:18

Absolutely silent here n Wales. Blowy will return I'm sure

Stretchedresources · 08/12/2024 09:23

Wind is still tearing around north Hampshire. I think I can get a load of laundry out before light rain returns later.

WingBingo · 08/12/2024 09:35

Still very windy here in Leeds.

nannynick · 08/12/2024 10:36

Went for a walk, managed 2.6 miles in the windy rain. It's only a drizzle but got the waterproofs rather wet. Occasional wind gusts. West Surrey/Berkshire border.

I’m on a plane. It’s lovely and sunny up here. The journey to the airport was the journey from hell though. Closed roads, floods and fallen trees. One fell right in front of us blocking the road. It took us twice as long as it should have done.

BestIsWest · 08/12/2024 10:56

Just been out to feed the birds, still a bit blowy round here but nothing like yesterday. Glorious sunshine.
Loads of trees down locally and some quite major roads blocked. The local council have done an amazing job of responding to fallen trees.

Rowgtfc72 · 08/12/2024 11:03

Still ridiculously blowy here in the east. After trying to sleep in several different beds I settled at half 3 in mine wearing ear defenders.
Had the doggo out this morning and we have a small bit of fence down but otherwise everywhere is damage free surprisingly.

Scampuss · 08/12/2024 11:41

National Grid update says no power until 8pm tomorrow now Sad

Ocado just delivered and the nice man let me have a couple of their dry ice packs to use in my new outdoor fridge (aka box with many towels for insulation).

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 08/12/2024 11:51

They chainsawed the trees on the bridleway past my house at about 9pm last night. Yesterday morning the town was pretty much cut off as big trees down on all major and most minor roads. We were in the yellow zone, presume it was worse in amber and red.
There is traffic in town, which just reminds me how weirdly quiet it was yesterday apart from the wind.

The station is shut until further notice as the roof is currently spread out across all lines. They were shutting the station from Christmas for refurbishment, including the roof. They might be planning to bring the works forward.

Scampuss · 08/12/2024 12:42

We have power ⚡️

Gingerwarthog · 08/12/2024 14:46

Yes @Scampuss
Our power alerts were totally wrong too and overestimated how long we'd be off grid. It was 6 hours in the end but they predicted 18. We did a dance of joy round the kitchen when the lights came back on (including the dog).

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 08/12/2024 14:52

The wind's dropped, it feels weird.

Glad those who were cut off have their power back and hope anyone not yet reconnected is sorted soon.

justasking111 · 08/12/2024 14:56

Hope you all get power back asap
