winds of 80mph are predicted to hit parts of Ireland and the UK over Friday and Saturday. I’m north wales and we’re looking at winds of around 72mph on Saturday according to the met office. Lots of local events have been cancelled. Anyone else potentially affected by the storm?

I have never driven in 70mph winds but I’m guessing it’s very much not advisable?

Well, the wind has woken DH up which in turn means the wind has woken me up 🤦🏻‍♀️ (stealthy he isn't - the great clattering buttock).
One of our cats is spooked. He wouldn't go into the kitchen for his breakfast, and keeps looking around as if he's being followed 😿
Not that windy here, but we're just out of the amber in Cheshire.

We are just out of the amber zone too but it sounds so scary!

Sorry to jump on this thread but I’m trying to decide whether to travel from Newcastle to Liverpool today (whole family) for a family do. My gut says no but worried about letting others down. Do you think overcautious?

Hope those of you in red areas stay safe xxx

I wouldn't, Liverpool is in the amber zone.

The Gatwick flight to Belfast has shaved 20 minutes off its flight time so will actually be the first flight to land of the day - watching now for go-arounds

He's landed, Glasgow flight up next. There's been a go-around at Belfast City though

AllIsMerryAndBright · 07/12/2024 07:25

Not in a red area but it's bloody windy here already. Gusts of 49mph currently. Am feeling nervous about our trampoline 😬

South west wales. Close to Pembrey Sands so used to it being windy round here. But I am lying here really anxious about the way it sounds out there and the noises my roof is making. And we're not in the worst of it yet. Anyone else awake?

I’m within a mile of you, also very close to beach and its awful.

Internal doors rattling, and between me and the dog, up every hour due to noise. And then - emergency alert has gone off!!

stay safe folks!!

uve just noticed that Big Jet TV are going to broadcast for Heathrow this morning so if we’re all stuck inside it might be an entertaining watch (not for the passengers though obv 🤢)

Oh God! Debating whether to leave for Stansted imminently

tribpot · 07/12/2024 07:45

Joining in as my DS is in the red zone in Bangor (Gwynedd). I've not heard from him yet this morning but I was trying not to worry him when I spoke to him last night.

Not that I think anyone is wondering, but there is not a breath of wind here in Leeds, it's almost spooky.

khaitai · 07/12/2024 07:53

Just had a peek outside now it's light. Looks like our garden gate is broken and the wobbly bit of garden wall has finally given up. All easily fixable so that's good. Can't see any damage in the road so hopefully the neighbours are all alright.

Zippedydodah · 07/12/2024 07:55

My mobile has just had another red alert message, I’m in south Glos/north Wiltshire area, it’s very windy and wet here but I’ve seen it worse.
I will take the dog out in a bit once I’ve had a coffee, we’ll stick to the estate and the paths are fairly sheltered.

ChaosHol1 · 07/12/2024 07:58

I'm only yellow in south west Scotland and the winds been persistent and loud all night. Cats been driving me mental constantly crying to get out, looking out the door and running upstairs when she sees the rain and wind. Can't imagine how bad it must be for those of you in Amber and Red.

Checked the power cut map and there's alot of areas in Wales out now and most saying not expected to be restored till 8/9pm. There's an area just down from us out till around 8 in Dumfries. Hope everyone stays safe and there's no or minimal damage.

AInightingale · 07/12/2024 08:01

I am more worried about my mother's empty house than my own tbh. Trying to get it ready to sell at the moment and it's not in a great state of repair. Steeling myself for going to inspect it tomorrow! Prepare me for the worst, is a single glazed window which already felt a bit wobbly round the edges likely to have survived those winds? (75mph where I am).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/12/2024 08:05

Good morning all, I've been catching up with the latest situation. The picture looks similar to last night, I think that it is possible the peak winds may last a little longer than first projected and will only ease off slowly.

Reminder: If you live in a red warning area. Do not travel. If you live in an amber area, avoid travel unless it is urgent. Even in the yellow area trees are coming down across roads. There is a lot of disruption on the rail network.

There are power outages across affected areas. Different DNOs provide data for different regions (why can I not find a centralised feed?) In particular south Wales, central and western Midlands and SW can be seen on this map.

Maybe it left early/arrived early because there’s no way you can cut 20 minutes off that flight time given the sector length and of course the wind’s a westerly, even at altitude

If you are using Flightradar it might be worth being aware that that site gives the impression takeoff and landing times are departure and arrival times, which is incorrect.

LynetteScavo · 07/12/2024 08:07

I'm in the midlands and it's wet, but not too windy. However, it's deserted out there, everybody seems to have stayed at home so far today.

SleepyLlamaFace · 07/12/2024 08:07

SE Wales here, under an amber warning but on the border of the red alert, the wind picked up around 1am and has been loud all night, big gusts, very noisy- internal doors rattling, roof creaking, can hear trees outside creaking and groaning. Rain has just started up again in earnest. Cats are spooked, I'm the least favourite human in the house but the only one awake, so they're cwtched up (cowering) on my lap.

CaveMum · 07/12/2024 08:07

Big Jet TV just started up. Already seeing plenty of go arounds according to the man (can never remember his name!)

You are close to the centre of the low pressure at present. Wind speeds will pick up again as the storm moves through. You can see this on the surface pressure charts.

There's an Etihad that has tried to land at Manchester and circled for a while that's heading towards Lincoln...

BestIsWest · 07/12/2024 08:24

Lots of trees down locally and a couple of power cuts in the village (near Swansea) but everything seems intact here so far.

tribpot · 07/12/2024 08:24

Just heard from DS in Bangor, he says "weather's okay, just stormy" and he slept through the night.

Rowgtfc72 · 07/12/2024 08:29

East coast of England and have woken up to nothing. We were told 49 mph gusts overnight. Nothing.
One weather model has told me 87 mph gusts at midnight. Xtc says 56. Others average out at 65.
Rather hoping it blows away as I hate windy weather.
At least I've realised looking at my 7 open weather apps, that what I really want for Christmas is my own weather station in my backyard so I can see the wind speed exactly over my house!
