Still, at least we won't have hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland, cereal crops, woodland and heathland on fire, eh? We won't have elderly & infirm people dying from heat exhaustion. We won't have a blistering drought, when the streams and aquifers run dry and the farmers can't water their crops which shrivel up in the fields. We won't have ponds, lakes and reservoirs drying up and millions of fish and invertebrates dying.

And if the planet gets hot enough to melt the polar ice shelves any more than they are already, the gulf stream will be diverted south and the UK will get Siberian winters as well as Saharan summers, tropical storms, devastating floods and unstoppable coastal erosion.

The British Isles are supposed to have a temperate maritime climate. All our trees, wildlife, the crops we grow, our infrastructure of roads and rail, housing, offices and factories, gardens, everything is based on that type of climate. We are not geared up for even minor climate change. It is a catastrophe waiting to happen and still people go "Yay!! Bring it on!!". Twits.

I think you have completely missed the point I was trying to make, and the one I made earlier. I am not at all saying I want those extreme temperatures.

I would like 10 of those 40 degrees so that we can enjoy 23 degrees and some sunshine instead of the 13 degrees, torrential rain and flattened crops we had yesterday.

Hoping not too. I check the weather each morning and am so relieved to see the 21/22 degree temperatures stretching off into the next ten days. Cannot stand hot weather.

RampantIvy · 16/07/2023 07:39

I would love to have 21/22 degrees over the next few days. Our forecast is 16/17 degrees Sad

Totally with you on this! It’s absolutely perfect temps now

Taylorscat · 16/07/2023 07:42

Although I prefer 19 max else I can’t walk the dog 😁

PuppyMonkey · 16/07/2023 07:43

Jet stream is protecting us innit.

We’re looking at 22 to 24 which isn’t too bad

I’d go for a bit warmer

@AlligatorPsychopath

Yeah we will get a few days of it then rain again

We survive these things....droughts,crop failures

There’s a potato shortage already. 🤦🏼‍♀️

It’s the I’m alright Jack attitude. Well educated - my arse.

This is the problem, nobody cares as long as they get to roast their bodies. Long term it will have an affect and by then it’ll be too late. The majority would happily roast all summer and love it if we had a constant 30c from April - Sept.

BarbieBunches · 16/07/2023 07:47

It’s sad and quite frightening that there are people who are celebrating the idea of this heatwave coming here when there are so many dying in southern Europe. 🤷‍♀️

It’s not a “bit of sun”, it’s so hot people aren’t allowed outdoors. How’s that fun?

@NuffSaidSam

Haha you do get people wanting the colder weather tho.... they can't bloody wait to get out the blankets, throws, pumpkins and candles! Everyone on snow watch for weeks....

I work with several people like this. One is already talking about Christmas and the others are all excited for Halloween.

Lottapianos · 16/07/2023 07:49

'I work with several people like this. One is already talking about Christmas and the others are all excited for Halloween.'

Oh lord. Christmas talk in July 🤦🏻‍♂️I quite enjoy Winter but all in good time!

LlynTegid · 16/07/2023 07:50

Seems unlikely the current one will, though that does not rule out a possible one say in August, which is when the highest temperatures last year were.

I don't want it though, and have sympathy for those affected elsewhere in Europe and indeed the U.S.

Fizbosshoes · 16/07/2023 07:57

@LlynTegid I'm pretty sure the 40° day was in July last year?

I think most people just want hotter than 17° (not entirely unreasonably given its summer)...but there's a lot of scope between hoping it will be warm and sunny rather than rainy, windy and in the teens...to 40° +

It does come round quicker than you think 😂.

back to school in a few weeks and the countdown to Halloween and Christmas will be in full swing.

Fizbosshoes · 16/07/2023 08:02

I saw lots of Christmas paraphernalia in the works yday!! 😳

IhaveanewTVnow · 16/07/2023 08:04

I would like a summer with less rain. 21 degrees is fine but try camping, bbq, beach trips in the rain - no fun at all. I like warm evenings where I can sit outside late. I spend sept to April having to sit on my sofa wrapped up in a blanket so I like at least a few months of a summer.

Daisyhillsareblooming · 16/07/2023 08:08

@orangeleavesinautumn no cancellation unfortunately. I am very worried about this extreme heat in a capital city .

bookworm14 · 16/07/2023 08:40

Anyone wishing for the temperatures they’re seeing in southern Europe is insane and frankly not very bright (not including those who just want it to be a little bit warmer, before I get jumped on). Weeks of 40-plus degrees is hellish and I’d rather have our current weather any day.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/07/2023 08:41

@IhaveanewTVnow whereabouts are you? I'm in East Suffolk and we had a bit of rain on Friday after weeks of no rain. Yesterday we had a 10 minute shower in the morning then it was dry and warm for the rest of the day.

RampantIvy · 16/07/2023 08:55

You live in the driest part of the UK @EmmaGrundyForPM. I'm currently in Newcastle, but live in South Yorkshire, and both areas had torrential rain on and off all day yesterday. We have had quite a bit of rain in Yorkshire this year and our reservoirs are full.

We don't have any temperatures forecast to be over 20 degrees for the foreseeable future Sad

25 degrees would be perfect for me.

Very dry here too

One full day of rain stopped grass from being too brown

WedTheBed · 16/07/2023 09:01

if it could reach us just in time for my wedding that would be lovely😂

but on a serious note, I hope not. I worry about my kids in the heat waves, trying to keep them hydrated and some days it’s too hot to even go out so we’re couped up inside with the fans on!

Delatron · 17/07/2023 19:26

I think 40 plus is awful as you can’t go out in it and all the risks of forest fires. It’s awful for the wildlife.

However this cool, showery weather looks set to continue. So that’s a pretty rubbish July we’ve had. Met office are saying average to below average to at least mid August and then we’re nearly in to September.

Looks even cooler next week. Not good for farmers and harvests. And I don’t feel ready for autumn yet! A few weeks of warmish weather in June does not constitute a summer in my eyes.

LegendsBeyond · 17/07/2023 19:35

I hope not! I’m enjoying the 21/22 degrees at the moment. Hopefully it continues like this.

MoggyP · 17/07/2023 19:48

Wanting to have settled sunny weather with temperatures in the mid-20s is one thing.

Hoping for a heatwave, like the one elsewhere in Europe, well that's just wanting misfortune and I'm afraid I don't have any sympathy with that whatsoever
