Been taking a bit of a breather from forecasting while the weather has been pretty benign. But it does look as though there's a reasonable chance of some very wet and very, very windy weather in the middle of the week next week. It's too early to talk about worst affected areas, other than western coastal areas at the moment look set to see the worst of the winds.

Neighbours shed took off and hit his car this evening. It's eased off now but tomorrow evening more of the same unfortunately.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/04/2023 22:42

There will be a lull tomorrow before the winds pick back up in the SW especially through the afternoon. Looks pretty wild and squally.

Um so Peppa Pig World (one of the places we were visiting while down South) is a no go tomorrow... but Thursday okay?!

BouleBaker · 12/04/2023 07:09

Titanic by any chance @bizzey? Looks good. The Mayflower us a fab theatre.

enjoy Britannia @User0610139736. P&O are fab with kids usually.

They've shut some of the Gardens and Country parks because of the wind due today. It was gusting up to 45 knots last night. (Sotonmet is quite handy for seeing how bad the weather really is https://www.sotonmet.co.uk/(S(2ijwenfkss5t0g45bsljvjq5))/wind.aspx)

Thursday looks pretty good. I would carpe diem!

Some very strong winds in places today as per previous forecasts. Heavy rain and the potential for thunderstorms too.

I see there's snow in parts of Wales now.

I would check in with them. Gusting to around 50mph on the coasts, higher over water.

I'm in that general area, try to bear in mind that you're sheltered by the IOW. The wind is strong from the southwest. I am a few of miles inland (mainland) and we get it straight off the needles with not a lot to slow the wind down inbetween. It can be a bit wild! Not such an issue southampton to Cowes. I wouldn't expect it to be horrific and they will cancel if it's bad...

TheWonderfulThingAboutTiggers · 12/04/2023 09:42

Funny so many of us going down to the same corner!

TheWonderfulThingAboutTiggers · 12/04/2023 09:42

Paultons park has a thing reissuing tickets for today. We hadn't booked so hoping to go tomorrow!

Really squally here in SW Devon - bins blowing over etc. Wind howling. I'm curious why the Met Office haven't named it as a storm - the French have? With tourists out and about, early season campers etc judging by the current weather I would have thought they would. Any thoughts Kitten? - is there a sub-plot to why the Met Office seem to be avoiding naming storms this season?????

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/04/2023 12:50

Same here in E Devon @Makinglists. Rescued the bins before the wind really picked up.

Sun’s just come out but don’t know how long it will last.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/04/2023 13:00

No sub-plot Makinglists. Storms are named when they reach the criteria to issue Amber or Red warnings on the basis of impacts from wind, rain and potentially snow. Issuing amber warnings is quite subjective based on estimates of how much impact there will be on infrastructure.

Sometimes locally they don't quite always get it right in peoples eyes. This might be because they use different criteria on what is an impact compared to what the public might think. Sometimes it might be because the storm is more severe than first thought.

A lot of consideration does go into the warning system - they look at the area hit - is it urban, or suburban and what sort of infrastructure is vulnerable there. Local consultation can also take place with authorities in the area too.

France are probably going to see greater wind impacts from this storm than we will.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/04/2023 13:02

It looks like it is more severe than first estimated. I hadn't spotted that the Met Office had issued an extra warning for the West Country this morning for wind speeds gusting above 70mph on the north coast.

There's snow on the hills outside, will try to get a picture when I go out.

Tomorrow cold and wet poor kids on school holidays

2reefsin30knots · 12/04/2023 13:08

The ano at the National Sailing Academy was reading gusts of 71kts at 12.40. No sailing today!!!

TrombonesAreNotBones · 12/04/2023 13:21

yikes!

Makinglists · 12/04/2023 15:19

Thanks for the explanation Kitten makes sense - just seemed odd as we've had named storms down here that have been less impactful. Lots of trees down in Devon and squalll showers coming through thick and fast!

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 12/04/2023 15:19

Super windy here in Herts and loud thunder

Smoky1107 · 12/04/2023 15:37

Kent has been very blustery, a tree has gone over on the train line and we're fairly rural so I'm just waiting for the power to go off! It's sunny one minute and rainy and windy the next!

EmmaEmerald · 12/04/2023 15:59

My flat - on a high floor - is horrendous. Honestly, it sounds like bits are falling off it!

ZittiEBuoni · 12/04/2023 16:01

You must be near me 2reefsand30knots.

Dd was working in a snack shack on the beach earlier but was sent home when a window blew out Hmm. I did say I didn't think there would be much point opening today...
