and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

That's OK then, no need to say stay safe lol.
I've been to Iceland a few times and it's one of my favourite places.

GlaceDragonflies · 23/08/2014 20:43

@Airlivenet on twitter are now saying the volcano is erupting, not on the webcam it isn't!

GloriaSmud · 23/08/2014 20:57

Lol.
There's been another webcam set up but I think it needs a bit of tweaking ~ it looks like the surface of Mars!

I've been laughing at the comments on here:
some junk and some gems.
Favourite so far is the person who thought that it was worth pointing out that there may be a lot of steam if the magma comes into contact with the ice. I asked if there would be a lot of water, apparently not - it will all become steam Grin

GlaceDragonflies · 23/08/2014 21:35

these two twitter feeds are mildly amusing:
twitter.com/Bardarbunga
twitter.com/dyngjujokull

GloriaSmud · 23/08/2014 21:56

They're excellent ~ I'm liking "The eruption is closer to #Dyngjujokull than #Bardarbunga so we may need to retrain journalists in pronunciation"

scaevola · 23/08/2014 22:00

From the Icelandic Met Office site just now: "Warning Presently there are no signs of ongoing volcanic activity. The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano remains red as an imminent eruption can not be excluded."

(BTW: if you're in Leics, did you feel the Oakham earthquakes earlier this year?)

GlaceDragonflies · 23/08/2014 22:13

Indeed :) I can now pronounce it thanks to Youtube

GlaceDragonflies · 23/08/2014 22:14

ding-you-yo-cookie - sort of!

scottishmummy · 23/08/2014 22:18

How exciting

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 23/08/2014 22:24

It's more of yo-kutl. We had a lesson from an Icelandic chap

JerseySpud · 23/08/2014 22:29

Just read about Laki

If it was an eruption like that, with this being a suspected El Nino would it make it worse?

RedToothBrush · 23/08/2014 22:41

Jersey, I'd be buying a snow shovel in September to ensure they didn't sell out, put it that way.

GlaceDragonflies · 23/08/2014 22:49

You go ahead and be smug OYBBK Grin

RedToothBrush · 23/08/2014 23:02

I just make up my own versions of Icelandic place names!!! When me and DH were there I just gave up. We now have alternative names that we both understand. If we were lost and had to ask the locals, we'd be stuffed... but given there is only really one road, I figure that its pretty hard to.

JerseySpud · 23/08/2014 23:02

RTB

That would be time for me to turn into a prepper. No boats and no planes means no food arriving on this island

GloriaSmud · 23/08/2014 23:08

scaevola ~ not that one, no. I think there have been a couple of earthquakes over Oakham way over the years and I don't think we've ever felt them. The Retford one, most definitely did feel.

Just seen this on volcano cafe, there are going to be real (as opposed to volcanic!) fireworks at Jokulsarlon later. The webcam is here ~ 'tis looking lovely at the moment.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 24/08/2014 08:24

Two quite large quakes overnight ~ 5.3 and 5.1. I'm not liking what they're saying on volcano cafe about 'Laki style' eruptions atm.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 24/08/2014 09:22

Jokulsarlon is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. It's other worldly.

volcano cafe are unsure if the eruption has actually started yet. But it has some good diagrams and photos to help locate Bárðarbunga on webcams, so hopefully we won't get muddled by dust storms again (oops!)

GloriaSmud · 24/08/2014 09:59

The whole of Vatnajokull seems to be rocking and rolling at the moment. The 2-4 Hz on the tremour graph is going off the scale!

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 24/08/2014 10:38

Gloria, when Laki went, it wasn't just an eruption at Laki... there was a second eruption at another volcano during the same period because the whole Vatnajokull system is connected.

If you remember when we last had the ash cloud of doom a couple of years ago, they were worried about Katla going kaboom too.

GloriaSmud · 24/08/2014 13:53

Larger EQs have been happening regularly in the last couple of hours. The Aviation colour code is back to orange though.

nannynick · 24/08/2014 15:18

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through Iceland and below Iceland there is a hot spot (magma coming up to near the crust) and those combine to make Iceland continually change, grow bigger. Least that is what I got from watching a documentary about Iceland's volcanoes.

Is there a worry that it may result in a repeat of June 1783?

GloriaSmud · 24/08/2014 16:38

nannynick ~ that's what I understand (about the hot spot) but there are also fissures and ridges either side of the MAR as well, where the ground has been pushed and pulled over millions of years. I think the worry is that magma is travelling away from Bárðarbunga along a fissure/s and this could become a major rifting eruption and (again from what I understand, oh cripes, I hope I'm getting some of this right!), they tend to go on for a while as they get their magma directly from being over this hot spot.

GloriaSmud · 24/08/2014 16:41

The whole place seems to be moving around a bit at the moment!
