and it's a big 'un!
This time at Bárðarbunga, with over 200 earthquakes recorded so far and last night, the Icelandic Met Office raised the aviation colour code to yellow to reflect the unrest that's going on.

Sorry to keep posting, but it looks like there's more lava spewing out this evening than there was yesterday.

Newbiecrafter · 15/09/2014 21:28

Oh no! I think that's old footage. Blush

RedToothBrush · 15/09/2014 22:30

The is another vent that is active tonight. They are trying to work out if its an old vent (from the current eruption) or a completely new one.

Newbiecrafter · 15/09/2014 22:40

Is it significant if it's a new one?

stihlhere · 15/09/2014 22:52

Sorry Lavadragonflies for not relying we lost BB for a few days. We will be travelling to Reykjavik and were hoping to get a hire car for a few days to do some exploring.

It's six weeks away so fingers crossed things may have settled down by then.

Can't believe the lack of interest in this by our news producers, guess we'll only hear about it if it starts to affect us here in the UK.

pearlgirl · 15/09/2014 23:10

Stihl - I'm very jealous at the thought of your half term trip - in a moment of madness I suggested we went at Christmas time but know it would be better to go when there is a bit more light.
If you get out into the Golden Circle Geysir, Gulfoss and pingvellir are all fab - we had great fun watching people snorkelling in the rift and DH and ds1 went lava tubing which was fab ( but too much like crawling in caves for me).
Hope you have a fab time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/09/2014 12:34

Just means that theres still plenty of oomph in it Newbie.

Stihl, have you booked your accommodation? There's a couple of places I can recommend.

stihlhere · 16/09/2014 14:02

Flights and accommodation booked in February. Took out holiday insurance at the time as well.

We stayed in Hotel Odinsve last time, which was wonderful, but as we decided to take the boys this time we booked an apartment.

Newbiecrafter · 16/09/2014 14:24

managed to get onto the mila bardarbunga webcams. bardarbunga shows a really clear image and I can see what looks like rivers agan. Bardarbunga 2, is more fuzzy but there is a line of white smoke/team which I haven't seen before . is that a new fissure?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/09/2014 14:32

You sound very organised Stihl :)

Newbiecrafter · 16/09/2014 14:50

and to the left of the main smoking fissure, there's another one that wasn't there a few minutes ago on the mila cam bardarbunga.

i have no idea what it means. :( Are there any guides that can help me understand what I'm looking at?

Newbiecrafter · 16/09/2014 15:12

and now its gone. it looked quite strong too. not as big as the main one.

I wonder if I'm just imagining things now.

LavaDragonflies · 16/09/2014 15:44

We've been to the places that Peargirl recommended, but as we went in the winter there was no snorkelling etc!

stihlhere · 16/09/2014 16:18

Will definitely do the Golden Circle again but hopefully by hire car this time. Think the boys would spend a whole day at Strokker, I know I could!

Missed out on the Blue Lagoon last time too. Also think the Penis museum could be an interesting afternoon for two giggling boys.

We spent Christmas Day in the Blue Lagoon - it was fab and felt very decadent. This summer I think my highlight was a very wet trip on jokulsarlon - but it is a huge drive and the boys loved glacier walking. We stayed in a valley next to Geysir ( 10 mins on foot) and so had a number of trips to Stokkur and lots of lovely liquorice dipped ice cream in the visitor centre.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/09/2014 19:26

If you dont mind a long drive I really really really recommend Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. It absolutely is worth it. Completely out of this world and if you can catch it with the aurora over it I think it would be mind blowing.

It does seem as though the eruption is slowing down. This means that the system is losing its outlet for pressure release so may not be a good thing.

We went whale watching on a semi-stormy day in February, the morning trip was cancelled due to the weather but they decided to run the afternoon one at the last minute. We saw four humpback whales :)
(no sea sickness either)

pearlgirl · 16/09/2014 20:05

We saw dolphins and puffins but no whales on a calm day in July this summer. Really wanted to see whales - still it is another reason to go backSmile

RedToothBrush · 16/09/2014 20:17

If you go to Jökulsárlón and want to do the boat trip, I would try and see if you can find out if its running. We went a number of years ago in September and it was the last week before the winter it was running.

Re: whalewatching, you will also get very, very, very cold.

stihlhere · 16/09/2014 20:47

Thank you all for the recommendations and sorry for hijacking the thread.

I'm going to print it out for my eldest to read on the plane. I'm talking to the boys about the eruption as much as I can without giving the game away.

Newbiecrafter · 16/09/2014 20:53

Ooooh, sounds like an amazing trip. I'm hoping this thread stays for a long while as I'd love to go and judging by all the recommendations, I'd want to see all the places mentioned. Hope you have a fab fab time. Xx

Newbiecrafter · 16/09/2014 20:54

OYBBK, if the system is losing it's outlet, doesn't that mean that the activity we can't see is also slowing down? I'm confused again

LavaDragonflies · 16/09/2014 21:03

As I understand it, and I am no expert, this lava is going to find an outlet somewhere. If that is not in holuhraun it is going to be somewhere else, perhaps bardarbunga will erupt from it's crater or something else will erupt somewhere else. My bear of little brain instinct thinks it will be somewhere else.
