Snowing in Essex now and looks like enough to take the kids sledging in an hour or so if it continues. We have some great sloping cliffs at the top our road which turn into a ski resort when it snows! Much fun to be had!

digerd · 20/01/2013 09:34

Just started snowing - very fine flakes- and coming from the north this time. All week it has come from the SSW. Temp -1.
South Herts

thekingfisher · 20/01/2013 09:35

am i terribly stupid to consider driving with dh and ds from near colchester into w.london for lunch at 12.30 and back again at about 4 are we likely to get stuck???????? going to do along a120 to stansted then m11 into london
whats the consensus??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2013 09:35

So this weather front does seem to be behaving pretty much as expected so far with timings that I posted yesterday still seeming quite accurate. The question yesterday was how far west this front would affect and the answer looking at the radar seems to be right over to Wales!

West Country not really getting very much if anything out of this I think and Manchester seems to have its magic snow shield switched on (for a city that from memory always seemed rather wet I have no idea why it repels snow so much! I think it must be the way the Pennines curve round it, so the only weather it allows in is from the west)

Morning kitten. I'm in mid surrey and areas that were snow free are now recovered. It is very light though. Is it going to get heavier? Possibly enough for a snow day tomorrow? We had 10cm on Friday, but roads now clear.

BehindLockNumberNine · 20/01/2013 09:39

Snowing lightly but steadily in Surrey, fingers crossed it keeps going all day Smile

thekingfisher · 20/01/2013 09:39

now just started snowing with us ( N of Colchester)

HeavenlyAmy · 20/01/2013 09:40

snowing in east sussex, bit worried as dc in london and coming back by train at 5!

nannynick · 20/01/2013 09:41

BehindLockNumber9 -been snowing here for about last hour.
Snowfall in West Surrey/East Berkshire border area seems light at the moment but I expect it to stick to untreated surfaces, especially the existing snow. -9 temp forecast tonight, so ice will be a problem tomorrow.

Are cold overnight temps expected in most areas?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2013 09:42

Yes, I think that's it :) weather from the west creates orographic precipitation for Manchester as it is on the windward side of the Pennines for that scenario. Weather from the south east, north east or east means that places like Sheffield get the orographic precipitation and Manchester remains drier as its on the leeward side. Snow tends to come from easterly directions. Hence why Manchester is quite a wet city, but rarely gets proper snow.

Orographic precipitation is when air lifts and cools as it goes over hills/mountains. If the temperature lowers to dew point rain happens :) (broadly speaking)

Ooh thekingfisher that gives me hope
I am in Colchester excitedly awaiting the snow. We only got around an inch on Friday night.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 20/01/2013 09:44

Snooooow!

(again) in south northants. A little earlier than expected but entirely lovely.

digerd · 20/01/2013 09:44

I don't do Walkies while snowing - don't think little dog wants to either- so have to wait until it has stopped. Strange that the flakes are so tiny when the temp is only -1.?
In Germany where we had - 15-18, I noticed the flakes were small and dry, not like our usual enormous ones. But not as tiny as these.

TwllBach · 20/01/2013 09:47

Did you say over Wales OYBBK? Could I possibly have a snow say in Monday do you think?

As soon as I got home on Friday I got hit with a nasty cold/stomach bug and I really am not up to all the work I have to do today in preparation for tomorrow

Sparklingbrook · 20/01/2013 09:48

OYBBK BBC are saying 'light snow' for us from 11am this morning to 9pm tonight. Sad We are Worcestershire would you agree with that? I am starting to stress about DS1 and school tomorrow again. Sad
