Perhaps some snow for southern England.

Maybe some snow for some of southern England and east Anglia in the early hours tomorrow. It is marginal and many will see rain instead, but I think that the chilterns may see some and perhaps the higher part of the Downs as well. Could be a messy mix, so don't get too excited!

Met office does actually agree...but they are of course not calling it a beast from the east

Current alert level: Level 3 - Cold Weather Action

Issued at: 0832 on Fri 7 Dec 2012

There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 0000 on Monday and 0800 on Tuesday in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.

Less cold over the next few days with higher daytime temperatures than of late so the mean temperature criteria is unlikely to be met this weekend, despite overnight frosts. There is now growing confidence that into the start of next week very cold air originating from the east or northeast will spread across the whole of England. An east or northeasterly flow at times will bring snow showers, particularly to the east of England, these sometimes heavy, and leading to locally significant accumulations. At present this spell of very cold weather looks set to last through much of next week and it is likely this alert will need to be extended.

An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. These details will not be updated here unless the alert level also changes, the latest forecast details can be obtained at the following link: www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/#?tab=map

Ah ok my app isn't showing that. I did inwardly snigger at 'beast from the East' tbh

tak1ngchances · 07/12/2012 13:32

Me too. Love weather drama!!

Glitterknickaz · 07/12/2012 13:36

Well the usual met office 5 Dayer is saying sunshine albeit with very low temperatures, so we'll see...

digerd · 07/12/2012 15:55

We had +2 minimum last night and early this morning the snow was all gone.
Despite some sunshine today, it felt cold in the chilly breeze. Maximum was +6. Thames valley north. Hope the Beast From The East, gets homesick and returns to Siberia before getting here !

headfairy · 07/12/2012 18:10

skies have cleared in W London and the temperature has dropped like a stone. Not looking forward to driving home at 11pm :(

This morning it was raining in Reigate town centre and snowing heavily at the top of Reigate hill :o It's only a difference of about 200m but it was enough obviously!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 07/12/2012 18:39

That's rather cool headfairy!

Kitten what are you thinking about the Eastern Beast? Will it bite us?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 07/12/2012 19:01

The beast from the east keeps retreating! I think though they aren't all they are cracked up to be, cos all though they are very cold, I'm not so sure they are as snowy as a good northerly or north easterly. I've not looked that up though to check my facts, Tis just my impression.

GingerBreadMacchiato · 07/12/2012 19:12

I'm sooooooooooooo wanting some snow!!!

headfairy · 07/12/2012 19:26

It was a bit strange Kitten, not so much four seasons in one day as two seasons in one town :o

digerd · 07/12/2012 21:38

Thames valley North here and temperature has remained constant at +5 /80% humidity @ 9.30pm, max was +6. Feels nasty damp cold.

digerd · 07/12/2012 21:42

Is the Beast going home as I hoped? Any weather from the east should be warmed up by the North Sea according to my geography teacher. And the hot weather in summer cooled - aren't we lucky??

tak1ngchances · 08/12/2012 12:49

V amusing twitter post: @uksnowalert: Ladies and Gentlemen "The Pest" vs "The Beast" the fight airing all next week - watch this space #beastfromtheeast #pestfromthewest #uksnow

LordFlasheartsCrackingNuts · 08/12/2012 13:08

I want the beast, I want snow

tak1ngchances · 08/12/2012 13:14

Same. I'm cheering for Beastie, big time. The Pest can eff off

digerd · 08/12/2012 13:37

What is the Pest from the West? Killer Flu?
Today's weather is awful, apart from it being a bit bright, it's damp cold + 6 atm. -6 is usually a dry crisp cold, but don't want a whip lash wind from Siberia as had that once in Germany at -15, and my scarf round my face froze from my breath.

tak1ngchances · 08/12/2012 15:28

Pest is mild south westerly air

tak1ngchances · 08/12/2012 15:28

They will be meeting at some time next week, and whichever front dominates will decide whether we have whiplash cold wind or murkiness.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 08/12/2012 15:43

GFS is currently going for the westerlies to win at the end of the week, with lots of rain :(
Colder up in Scotland and snow could be an issue in hilly parts up there.
Models could switch again though, we shall see.

Mild south westerly sounds good to me . Just had a man in my house who read my gas and electric meter.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 08/12/2012 16:33

That is a good point, it's nice if the bills aren't stupidly high.
