Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

We have family in New Jersey :(

Hope everyone gets through okay.

Dh has just taken the dog for his evening walk - I hope he does not blow away! The dog is not going to like it - at all! It is getting windy and school has been cancelled for tomorrow as well. DH or I walk through the house every hour or so, just checking windows and things. All fine for now. I have filled some saucepans with water and I am running the dishwasher now, so we do not try and do it later.

Facebook friends are talking about sleeping in bathtubs - but we are just thinking of sleeping in the basement - I hope that is good enough, that is where we hid during the Derecho. When DH gets back I am going to make him get the camping lanterns out so we have them ready. Uuugh - this is not fun!

Some possibly good news, I've read that the storm is perhaps coming in faster than expected. If that is true then hopefully the surge won't coincide with peak tide.

Sleeping in the bath tub would be very uncomfy and I don't think the wind speeds are going to get that bad? Though I know they are very high.

Atlantic city

Hurricane webcam here but you can't see much!

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:08

Tis only 55 miles off shore, I'm sure that's earlier than expected :) I am cautiously optimistic that this might mean that the flooding may not be as bad as feared in NY.

lubeybooby · 29/10/2012 20:11

It does seem to have sped up. At one point I noticed it was moving at 10mph, last I saw it had increased to 28mph. I do hope that works out a bit better than expected then.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:12

If I'm correct and I may well not be!!!!! peak storm surge should hit two hours before high tide in ny.

peedoffbird · 29/10/2012 20:14

I have family in New Jersey and also Connecticut. My cousin is always on FB but no sign of him. Worrying.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:16

Peedoff, might he have lost power already?

OP posts:
TwelveLeggedWalk · 29/10/2012 20:19

OYBBK, that seems to be what friends on the ground are being told too.

lisad123 · 29/10/2012 20:19

I'm hoping that they moved friends lower down in hotel, think they were floor 80!
Hoping its not as bad as predicted and all are ok and safe x

lisad123 · 29/10/2012 20:20

Power will go first, so don't panic yet.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:20

Half a million people are without power already according to CBS.

CMOTDibbler · 29/10/2012 20:29

I'm in Boston atm - it is vv windy and raining, but the power is fine. No buses running, and taxis have stopped too.
The hotel is full of people from the conference I am at (sessions stopped at 1 so people could get back to their hotels) getting riotously drunk Grin

vixcyn · 29/10/2012 20:30

My brother has lost half his roof..and he is on a 16 hour shift :(...I am so sad...his his is over 150 yrs..

vixcyn · 29/10/2012 20:30

I should say his home is just outside of Boston..

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:32

Oh crumbs vixcyn :(

OP posts:
OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:32

Cmot, should we all get drunk in solidarity?

OP posts:
vixcyn · 29/10/2012 20:37

Oh Big Bad, I am so upset and helpless..he is worried for his dogs...if safe the neighbours are going to get them...off to cry..and have a nip...

YoureAboutToBeBittenByMe · 29/10/2012 20:41

I hope everyone stays safe. Never been to the US, am watching some scary weather on the live webcams.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:47

Oh vixcyn :( I'm sorry, (feel bad for my flippant comment) I'm sure the neighbours will be able to get to the dogs and dogs are very resilient anyway. It's awful for your brother but everyone will rally round and look after him.

NorksAreMessy · 29/10/2012 20:47

Thank you as always OYBBK for this thread. I was just looking for one.
I can't imagine what these poor people must be feeling, knowing and planning for such a terrible event.

Special hand hold for vixcyn and cutmyownthroatDIBBLER

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:48

You are very welcome norks. It's awful that the models were so accurate this time.

vixcyn · 29/10/2012 20:49

Thank you all..my other brother and BIL are going to get dogs, secure house and remove valuables. Traveling is tough though I guess.
