Hurricane sandy

Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

This google.org/crisismap/2012-sandy is giving me hope that it won't be too bad here. I just want to go home though. At least we are not stuck at the airport though.

winnybella · 29/10/2012 16:49

Oh, ok, sorry, I thought you were scared that the building will collapse or something Grin. Hopefully it won't be too bad, I would think flights will resume by Wednesday. Also water won't reach 2nd ave, I don't think. Have fun, I would switch places with you in a heartbeat!
And how's the weather so far?

Viperidae · 29/10/2012 16:54

DS is in Manhattan, just got into a hotel on Lexington nr East 51st Street. We're concerned about him and girlfriend as they were supposed to fly yesterday and, by the time they didn't, stores were closing or sold out of most supplies so they don't have much. Hopefully they won't need it.

Have just advised them to not use lifts, keep phones and computers charged, get some cash and sit tight. Have told them to write down important numbers in case phones die and know where nearest shelter is just in case but, hopefully, hotel will look after them.

OK - so ds is at Taekwondo day camp. DH and I are at home watching Foxnews reporting and I am trying to concentrate a do some work.

MrsJamin - I can confirm that the US news channels do make a big deal about ANY weather. We never have a bit of rain, we have Thunderstorms, we never have snow, we have Blizzards. However, I also have to say that the weather can be quite spectacular. However - I worry because I am a homeowner - I worry about the trees, about the basement flooding, about power going out and having to hand pump the basement sump. You do not need to worry anywhere near as much - you will be FINE!

spamm · 29/10/2012 17:04

MrsJamin - I missed that part about missing your boys! You poor thing - I can understand that. But you will be home very soon, I am sure!

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 17:08

I am badkitten :) tis my halloween name - though its astonishingly appropriate given the circumstances.

cnn blog

Try not to worry about flights yet MrsJ, one day at a time at the moment. You are well prepared. I know you must miss your boys, youll be back home soon and I'm sure they are having a great time. In the mean time, for as long as you can post we can hold your hand and if you lose power and lose contact we'll all be thinking about you, until you can come back online.

Viperdae, very sound advice. the hotel will look after them well. They are very resilient and practical in NY.

Viperidae- your DS will be fine in midtown. Smaller convenience stores are open.

lisad123 · 29/10/2012 17:32

My best friends and kids are in New York and we are worried sick Sad
Had update earlier today they didn't leave and now are holed up in hotel and waiting out the storm.
My friend really really didn't want to go and I told her she would be ok, that chances of anything happening was unlikely and to go and enjoy herself.
We are just praying they get home safe at some point Sad

kingbeat23 · 29/10/2012 17:46

Have finally had contact with DB who assures us that it won't be so bad maybe loss of power for a few days. Still worried for him, but what else can you do??

MrsJ and all the others out there hope you're safe xx

vixcyn · 29/10/2012 17:52

From my brother in Boston..steady wind and rain. Some trees down, some localised power outages. Things appear a bit worse on Cape Cod,Plum Island..a limitless apprehension for 8p high tide..

vixcyn · 29/10/2012 17:53

Ummm..should have been a little apprehension..

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 17:55

Good that you heard from him kingbeat.

lisad, it would have been very hard for her to cancel, insurance companies wont pay out because of people being worried. They will get home safe I'm sure.

thanks vixcyn :)

limitless apprehension sounded like a good phrase for being very very worried, so I'm glad theres just a little worry1

I laughed after I read that...think that shall be new motto for my life!

lisad123 · 29/10/2012 18:01

They flew out last week, were due to home on Wednesday. I was hoping they might have got out of NY but guess maybe they thought best to stay put

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 18:57

oh ok, understood lisad. What rotten luck.

helpyourself · 29/10/2012 18:58

Breaking news on all the channels is a collapsed crane with no casualties. Wetish and blowyish out, but the storms not here yet.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 19:00

If any one is worried that they cant get through to friends/family, there are power outtages already.

click on the map to see around the NY area.
They may also cut power temporarily to lower manhattan according to some news sources to protect the power equipment as a lot of it is in basements and vulnerable to floods.

ScarePhyllis · 29/10/2012 19:16

It's just very grey and wet here at the moment. We're not supposed to get anything dramatic until tonight.

soggymoggy is that your usual name or is in honour of the occasion?

blackcurrants · 29/10/2012 19:31

The wind and rain.are.worse. DH and I are eating sweeties and playing Xbox together while DS naps. I could be ironing or doing paperwork but this is so much more fun! Good energy busting ideas for a toddler who can't go outside? So far I am planning a blanket fort and a dance-off. .

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 19:34

A 'dont touch the ground' obstacle course.
hide and seek
ermm...
visiting the zoo where the toys are the animals and you can make a map and binoculars.
mo point in doing paperwork. Extra strong gust and it might all blow away and then it would be wasted effort.

OP posts:
blackcurrants · 29/10/2012 19:54

That's what I thought :) our neighbour downstairs is an emergency responder, his truck has just driven off. DS is having a supersonic nap.and I am going to watch some dvds. my FB page is full of people posting the view from their window.and satirizing the news sensationalism. It.genuinely is nasty out there, but people who stay inside are pretty.safe.
