Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

So.sorry about your brother's roof, vixcyn - that is.very sad.

TalkinPeace2 · 29/10/2012 20:50

I have family in NYC whose windows face the evacuation zone, even though the door to the building is in Zone B.
During Irene they lost four windows....

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:50

Good. I hope they can get there quickly and safely.

Talkinpeace, I hope they stay secure this time. Do they have internal rooms they can move to?

No. Its a small apartment.
He would normally decamp to a friend's house - but cannot take the cat ....

vixcyn · 29/10/2012 20:55

I hate being so far from my brothers at times like this. Probably, better as I am very emotional, and they are STOIC!

MoreBeta · 29/10/2012 20:56

The danger hours are between 7 and 10 tonight NYK time at high tide when the storm is going to simultaneoulsy hit the shore.

It is said the storm surge will be 10 -12 feet and the defences are only 5 feet. Some of the NYK subway will likely flood. Con Ed the local electric company say there will be huge electric outages and 6500 buildings in NYK out of power.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 20:59

Talkin, if it got very bad perhaps he could go in the stairwell?
Pets do complicate things, I've been wondering what I'd do with my menagerie if we had to evacuate like that.

Vixcyn. Understood. They do sound like people who will cope very well with this.

vixcyn My dad's pretty stoic too ... then again he was on Wall Street in 2001. You are more use to your family as a calm sounding board ....

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 21:04

Morebeta, is that new info because it does look like the storm is going to reach the shores a couple of hours earlier than expected (I think)

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 21:06

I think NJ might be one of the hardest hit...I am only receiving news out of Massachusetts, though..

I think I can say without reservation...SANDY IS A BITCH!

spamm · 29/10/2012 21:18

Vixcyn - sorry to hear about your brother - I hope his dogs and family are safe. Everything else is replaceable - I keep on telling myself that, just in case something happens tonight!

Anyway, taking advantage of having very little to actually do by cleaning my washing machine. I cannot tell people that on facebook - they will think that I am completely nuts, and they know me. It has got noticeably worse here in Northern Virginia - strong wings and heavy rain. I have not got the news channel on, as ds is watching tv and I want to keep him distracted. I picked him up from day camp and he was the only kid left - so had a private Taekwondo lesson with the Master from Korea and said :" That was the best day ever!"

Driving home, I detoured round the neighborhood and all the creeks are filling up - and we have not had half the rain yet! Yikes!

Stay safe!

YoureAboutToBeBittenByMe · 29/10/2012 21:18

I have been watching this webcam for the last hour. Over which it has got noticeably worse. It's terrifying to watch and there are still people occasionally walking past! - although the police have just been and gone presumably to tell them not to be so stoopid!

pointyfangs · 29/10/2012 21:20

DH has family in NJ and Philadelphia, and a friend in Maine. We are worried (though none of them are near the sea).

PrincessOfChina · 29/10/2012 21:20

My brother is holed up in the hotel bar by all accounts. They've been for a blustery wander earlier today but will ride it out indoors now.

My mum is worried sick and just asked me why they didn't cancel all the flights so he couldn't go. I did point out that was ridiculous and a bit nanny state esque! I've managed to convince her the Empire State Building is unlikely to fall on his head.

In fact, I inspect the biggest problem he'll have tomorrow is the size of his hangover!

Oh hold on...he just text me...wants to know the football score!

kaumana · 29/10/2012 21:22

I've cousins and friends in NJ. Those in Tom's River were evacuated. Hoboken has warnings re evacuating ground levels.
