Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

TheCatInTheHairnet isn't even kidding. I remember Floyd in 1999, the news made it sound like the apocalypse was nigh, and though our parking lot flooded and three local news crews waded into it to do reports, we never even lost power.

And then there's Jim Cantore, harbinger of doom - - The Storm God.

buoy data
closest buoy is showing wave heights of 30ft. (clearly it will be different onshore!)

My old dog won't go out in any rain - she just doesn't approve, and does a Norah Batty- type expression at the thought of it. So we DRAG her out and make her at least walk to the corner of the street, where she does the world's quickest wee and drags us back, making us look like cruel cruel owners :)

Basically, we're fine here, but our dog doesn't approve of having wet toes. Heh. No US weather news service wants to hear that update :)

MooncupGoddess · 29/10/2012 14:02

Come come blackcurrants, surely you can provide more drama than that?

Here's some amazing footage of the 1938 New England hurricane:

Or if not blackcurrants, you could just pretend!
Do you own a canoe? (Eventually, yes, the anchors mock her hard for this.) ;)

MrsJamin · 29/10/2012 14:10

The TV is firmly off! It makes me more worried every time I switch it on! They are interrupting normal programming with it so you can't just switch off from thinking about it. We are trying to see it as an extra bit of holiday, no kids, listening to music, reading up on the net, sleeping when we like! I think the rest of NYC is doing the same.

helpyourself · 29/10/2012 14:56

Morning all! DD and I are in a hotel on the upper west, so far a little blowy out, but it's not even very wet. There are a few shops open locally, so we're about to venture out...

SoSoMamanBebe · 29/10/2012 15:03

I was at Battery Park with my friend who lives there last Tuesday. Madness. She has a corner apartment that looks out onto Statue of Liberty and the whole area has been evacuated. The appt is tiny and there was no way way you'd want to be in it with brittle windows. No where to hide at all.

peedoffbird · 29/10/2012 15:04

I have been watching Fox News and one thing strikes me. Where was all this aid and hype when the hurricane hit New Orleans? Interesting. However this is New York.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 15:06

peedoff, I very much remember all of the coverage in advance of Katrina - I was glued to it. Perhaps it wasnt so covered in the States though?

Jeff Masters has updated his blog.

Sandy is intensifying and is now very close to Cat 2 strength.

What a worry it is. Sad I have friends with small DC in NY too...they must be stressed.

MrsJamin · 29/10/2012 15:14

Is cat 1 more or less than cat 2? Did you used to be called Bad Kitten?

mankyscotslass · 29/10/2012 15:29

Cat2 is more powerful that Cat 1 MrsJamin

KnockKnockPenny · 29/10/2012 15:45

The storm hasnt even hit yet, and Atlantic City is already under water :(

LadyEvilBeagle · 29/10/2012 15:45

Just watching the Press conference live on Sky.
I hope the people that are living in Zone A leave without putting people's lives at risk.
I worry about the homeless and the elderly who may not be getting the message.

blackcurrants · 29/10/2012 15:48

Well we've experimented with a trip to the playpark at the end of our block - DS and dog both.going a bit mad with cabin fever! Got about 20 minutes running around time before it started raining hard again and I dragged DS home (dog dragged us both!). Friends in Manhattan say it's not nice outside but okay unless you're in the lowest parts. our old town Hoboken has done more serious evactuating, and things. It's a former Dutch settlement and right on the Hudson, I am glad we're not there.

We lost power for a minute or so, just enough to need to reset everything but thankfully nothing worse.

KnockKnockPenny · 29/10/2012 15:51

You can watch the US Weather Channel live here www.wherever.tv/tv-channels/Weather-Channel.jsf

winnybella · 29/10/2012 16:31

MrsJamin Did you say you were staying on the 2nd ave and 7th st? What are you worrying about? Confused I mean, don't go outside later in the day as there may be debris flying etc but nothing will happen to you where you are. I used to live 3 blocks up, btw [nostalgic]

MrsJamin · 29/10/2012 16:36

I am worrying because we're near a hurricane and people are saying its unprecedented - ie its not totally clear what impact on flooding there will be. We may lose power for days and our flight may not leave on weds evening. We will have been away from our boys for a week in total and I miss them awfully :(
