Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

Pipinjo, a hurricane has certain characteristics like a defined eye etc. it doesn't meet those anymore but a storm doesn't have to be a hurricane to be deadly and I think it may have intensified as it lost its hurricane status.

Next week, and overall cancellation or postponement is highly unlikely on the wider scale. Technically, individual states have very limited power to delay election if the entire state is without the ability to hold an election. But that will be individual states, not the country as a whole. And any delay is likely to be met with significant challenges in court.

It's kind of surreal.

I'm having to go to bed and hope your all safe tonight and please keep updates coming. X

OhYouBigBadBeast · 30/10/2012 00:21

I don't think they will postphone the elections. They have early voting so in the states where theres still an issue if there is an issue, they will go with the votes already cast.

You can't put any individual event down to climate change but I believe that models do suggest that bigger storms may happen more often

US contingent very quiet this evening, perhaps due to power cuts in part??

Crazy BiL Update: BiL and his neighbor have used a chainsaw to cut up chunks of the fallen tree where it was threatening to block important anti-flood drainage. The dog has been allowed to drag a chunk of the tree into the house. Dog is vv smug.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 30/10/2012 00:37

Flooding in one of the tunnels now.

Glad dog is happy!

As part of the East Coast US contingent, I am quite quiet because I find ths scary, so am hiding in the basement with Ds watching Spy Kids number 437. We still have power, but have camping lanterns at the ready and wine for emergencies.

I'm going to have to give in and sleep I'm afraid.
Thinking of those of you out there. Stay safe.

What does that mean badkitten that it's 13 feet higher than normal, or 13 feet inshore?

spamm · 30/10/2012 00:53

Oh - and my pre storm preparations were quite good, except for forgetting the microwave popcorn.

And you know things are serious when they close the gym. The gym opens at 4.30am and is open til late - but closed at 4pm today. Nowhere for the posers and testosterone to go!

vixcyn · 30/10/2012 00:54

Just wanted to say, my brother's dogs are happily in bed with my other brother and SIL. His house will need attention. Many many trees down, power outages, schools in Massachusetts called off for Tuesday..

SoggyMoggy · 30/10/2012 00:54

The generators last as long as the gasoline lasts, generally. Most hospitals in the area have significant fuel reserves.
