Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

BiL's power is out. He has crank generator for iphone and pedal gen for sump pump, and plenty of firewood.

vixcyn · 30/10/2012 00:59

Thanks Pipinjo...I worry so much.

mathanxiety · 30/10/2012 01:05

DD1 reported it's like a really bad thunderstorm in DC. They are expecting power cuts and she and the roomies have bought (scented) candles [hbiscuit] and matches, plus gallons of water, bread and cans of tuna and candy (shops full of candy coming up to Hallowe'en...) and [good thinking] a can opener.

Her bf's family are in NJ and I hope they are ok. Thinking of everyone on the east coast..

Hah! Can opener is indeed a good idea. Sounds like good buys all around.

vixcyn · 30/10/2012 01:08

Oh, I have been gulping tea all night! I expect I shall be in and out of the loo until dawn!

PipinJo: Yep, he's an engineer. And he used to live in Florida, solidly in the heart of hurricane country. So he and his partner have experience with this kind of thing.

mathanxiety · 30/10/2012 01:10

Expecting big storm surge on Chicago's Lake Michigan shoreline as the wind will be at 50 mph all day Tuesday across the lake. Waves will be 18 to 23 feet.

TanteRose · 30/10/2012 01:12

just keeping an eye on this thread.

Hope everyone is OK

math glad your DD and her friends have got supplies Smile

we have strong typhoons here in Japan (same weather phenomenon as a hurricane but they call them typhoons if they are in the Pacific) - scary stuff.

When the eye passes over, it is quite extraordinary - during the day, the wind suddenly drops to nothing, and the sun comes out for about a minute and a half (depending on the speed of the typhoon) and then, whoosh, the wind and rain start up again with avengeance

although from what OYBBK was saying, Sandy now has no defined eye so it will be relentless Sad

mathanxiety · 30/10/2012 01:13

PipinJo I LOL'd too they reckon they will use them again when the storm blows over. Plus why bother with cheapo tallow candles when you can spend your first real money on a dozen big Yankee Candles and enjoy the hurricane in style...

mamas12 · 30/10/2012 01:13

I can't stop watching the news. Ds is there stuck with a school trip in hotel on 8th Avenue. sigh no news is good news eh

Shock at waves on a lake being 18 to 23 feet high - bloody hell! (I know Lake Michigan is huge, but still...)

SoggyMoggy · 30/10/2012 01:18

Those Yankee Candles are actually ideal, I swear. They don't knock over easily or drip wax everywhere. Plus, they last ages and ages and cast a pretty decent amount of light.

There is a significant downside though. iif the storm is really prolonged it's easy to end up associating the smell with the memory. I can't smell cookies baking anymore without thinking of Katrina. Grin

vixcyn · 30/10/2012 01:19

Pipinjo..my brothers and most family are in Boston..sadly, I am the one far away! I am always up v late though..

LineRunner · 30/10/2012 01:21

Hey, mamas12, your DS will a heck of a story to tell when he comes home.

SoggyMoggy · 30/10/2012 01:21

Yep, I'm in the US. But I'm in Texas at the moment. The weather here is just fine. But yeah, BiL's used to this sort of mess.

Top tips from hurricane and powercut island over here:

Turn the fridge freezer up to max now and fill it with bottles of water so it is full. It will keep it colder longer, and you can drink the water.

Tape the fridge freezer up you dont open it absentmindedly and it stays cooler longer.

If your house floods, inside dishwasher and washing machine can be good place to store documents in ziplock bags, double bagged and taped. Then use further duct tape on appliance seal.

Why? Well, they are heavy and waterproof. So stuff inside is likely to stay dry.

Thoughts with everyone in the dark...

Bit late now but here's the definitive hurricane preparedness thing I always check when the Caribbean storm season kicks off. One more month to go here.
We were lucky, as Sandy missed us by 160 miles. Still got 9 foot waves though.

Blog on how to prep for a hurricane...

SoggyMoggy · 30/10/2012 01:53

Okay, more craziness to share. Neighbor lady came to borrow a flashlight from OBil, v embarrassed. Power went out, and she went to the drawer to get out the flashlight, gave a twist and it went BRRRRRRRRRR. Turns out what she thought was a flashlight was a sex toy, and she needed to borrow OBiL's light to search for the actual flashlight.
