Hurricane sandy

Looking potentially very serious indeed for the eastern seaboard of the US, perhaps including NYC if some models are correct. The storm will probably be extra tropical but nevertheless if it interacts with a trough modelled off the east coast that could bring down arctic air then the result could be approaching catastrophic, with utterly torrential rain, severe blizzards, hurricane force winds and severe storm surges all being possible.

I think people will be getting very worried about this. Mon tues weds are the days to be watching. Lets hope the storm turns east away from the us coast.

They may be out of power lighthouse.
Sandy now officially extra tropical. I think that the worst of the winds may still be to come for NY.

The county next door to mine has declared a state of emergency Hmm. My county is doing sod all. NYSEG is showing 58,000 customers without power in NY, mostly along the Southern Tier bordering PA. But they do have a reassuring picture of a man in an orange uniform on their website, so that is OK then.

Just dark, soggy and gusting so far up here in the Southern Tier.

MurderOfGoths · 29/10/2012 23:43

"Police came and moved them on."

People are so selfish aren't they? :(

SoggyMoggy · 29/10/2012 23:45

Sorry, I guess that made limited sense. WaWa is a convenience store chain in the region. It tends to be the last thing to shut down. As in most were still officially open up until fifteen minutes ago.

In the South East we use Waffle Houses. The Federal Emergency Management Agency even keeps track of which waffle Houses are open or closed to indicate the severity of a situation.

winnybella · 29/10/2012 23:48

Water up by a foot in last 30 minutes at Battery and still got about a foot with a high tide and they don't think th storm surge is over yet.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 29/10/2012 23:48

:) soggy.

Over 3 million without power now. The battery up to 12.5 ft.

winnybella · 29/10/2012 23:49

still got a foot to go with the tide, I mean

winnybella · 29/10/2012 23:50

So you think there's more wind to come to NY, OYBBK? On webcams Midtown Manhattan looks calm (ish).

SoggyMoggy · 29/10/2012 23:51

By way of comparison, neither Floyd nor Irene triggered a generalized WaWa shutdown.

lisad123 · 29/10/2012 23:54

Not wanting to go to bed for fear of what I might wake too

LineRunner · 29/10/2012 23:59

Will this affect the presidential election?

lisad123 · 30/10/2012 00:02

Sandy has landed in NJ and 3 foot of water Sad

SoggyMoggy · 30/10/2012 00:04

Possibly, LineRunner. It's definitely being politicized.

OhYouBigBadBeast · 30/10/2012 00:04

I do winny. Unfortunately..

Line runner, I expect so but in what way only time will tell.
Tide site slowing down but last height 12.93

Not sure as I don't vote, but don't a lot of places use those electronic machines for voting? If power is out in lots of places that could affect things. Plus people being displaced etc.

I'm also thinking about the logistics of voting. How do you run polling stations in areas of such huge disruption and the inevitable aftermath?

ScarePhyllis · 30/10/2012 00:10

I don't know if the election date has ever been postponed due to an emergency. Possibly not.

Anyway, some analysis here.

SoggyMoggy · 30/10/2012 00:10

Of the states effected, Virginia and New Hampshire are battleground states.

The chances of Romney saying something idiotic about the storm and looking like a complete plank right before the election are high, TBH. He's so politically tone-deaf. And in the meantime Obama can do stuff and look presidential. Which would suit me fine.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 30/10/2012 00:17

winny, I'm in midtown and it doesn't feel very calm her Smile
