Board Games for a good games night

gaydad2b · 02/10/2023 14:35

DH and I have got very into board games recently after going to a board game cafe with friends. We try to host a bi monthly board game night at home now. Are there any suggestions for really good board games we could start to play? We played a great board game (can't remember what it's called) that focused on a haunted house and exploring different rooms until one of the players turns on everyone else. It was great fun! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also.. any ideas for nibbles would be great as I can never decide what food to do!

@gaydad2b DH and his siblings like board games . So Cluedo ( probably a bit mainstream ) The Sigma File - you may have to get this off the internet as I think it was a 1970s game but they love it ) And DC loved Colditz

As I am not a board game enthusiast - those are my best vicarious recommendations.

As treat we had M&S cheese wrapped in parma ham as nibbles the other day - delicious. No preparation required. Otherwise perhaps some little tiny sausages with olive oil mustard and honey and baked in the oven served with cocktail sticks ( I realise these won't go down well with vegans / vegetarians ) Or humus and breadsticks

All best

Catan is brilliant. It takes a bit to learn all the rules, Luckily we'd played Junior Catan which really helped 😆 the junior one is actually very good too but prob get bored of it quicker .

Ooh I love board games - it was a tradition to buy each other a new one at Christmas for years til we had a baby and no time 😂

A particular favourite of mine is ‘Who Knows Where?’

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 02/10/2023 15:41

Ticket to ride is great - make you you buy a full game version as they also sell expansion packs. They do various countries and eras. We have Europe and US and they are great!

I have heard this is a good one , still haven't been able to play it yet with DH!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Catan sounds good too!

Code Names
Concept
Carcassonne
Catan
Pandemic

All the above work so well with a group!

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 02/10/2023 15:43

How many people will there be?

We love Secret Hitler, but it's a minimum of 5 players.
Cluedo
Would I lie to you?
Battle for Hogwarts if you're HP fans
Wakunda forever (something like that)

Card games we like are
Uno/Dos/Uno flip
Unstable Unicorns
Monopoly Deal
Gloom
Spoons

For food we always have cheese and crackers.

Findyourneutralspace · 02/10/2023 15:44

Articulate is a favourite with my crowd

MissJam · 02/10/2023 15:44

@DeltaAlphaDelta79 Yes! Ticket To Ride is fab!

I also love Wingspan but it’s quite a slow game and rather expensive. It’s gorgeous though.

221B Baker Street although it’s ‘quiet’ as you go round the area finding clues and reading them, writing them down and trying to work out the solution without revealing it to anyone so if you’re after a game you can blast music alongside or have a chat/laugh etc this won’t fit. I used to play it as a child (with my cuddly toys)

I love M&S food. I want to try and do most of the Christmas shop there this year! Had an amazing pâté from marks last year!

Azul - easy to pick up and good as both a 2-4 player. Max 4 players though

Cockroach poker - all ages / needs at least 4 players, can be riotous after a few drinks in my house.

sequence - card based classic. Can be played in teams if you are 4+ players which adds an extra bit of strategy

all v easy / quick to pick up games which have been solid winners for us

LostThestral · 02/10/2023 15:45

Sequence is really good

Haven't heard of battle for hogwarts but it sounds great! I'll give it a google now

Space team or selfish are fun as a group.
river dragons, takenoko, and ticket to ride are all popular at our house too.
herd mentality or just one are good for when you have groups.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 02/10/2023 15:47

Another recommendation for sequence!

We have quite a few between us, will go and see what else I can suggest, although I do like the old favourites of monopoly and risk!

gaydad2b · 02/10/2023 15:49

@LaundryWoes I had forgotten about selfish and I think I have played it before! Will have to add to DH's list! It's also made me remember exploding kittens, Scotland Yard and throw throw burrito!

I can't stomach monopoly anymore, it takes too long 😂

Fellow board game geek here!

I recommend:

Pandemic - a great game with others and you work together
Ticket to Ride
Chocolate Factory - an independent game, takes a while to learn, but great strategic game
The London Game
Carcassone

lilyblue5 · 02/10/2023 15:52

We really like Kingdomino, Azul, Pandemic (we really got into this, it’s hard to win and it’s all on teamwork) and ticket to ride (but honestly only the short version. The long version went on too long). Happy gaming!

lilyblue5 · 02/10/2023 15:54

Ohhh food wise, I always feel cheese and wine for a board game night..
Olives, dips, breadsticks. Stuff you can just keep going back for whilst playing.
small nibble puddings.

BlueChampagne · 02/10/2023 15:55

Telestrations
Concordia

Card games like Prediction Whist are a favourite with a gang.

Boardgamegeek is a great website to look at games reviews and more.

lilyblue5 · 02/10/2023 15:56

Also, if you chat to the cafe about which games you like, they will recommend you similar

Funderthighs · 02/10/2023 15:56

The Really Nasty Horseracing Game is great fun (and really nasty!). Rummikub is good if you have just 4 players as is Rummikub Word.

Haveyouseenthemuffinman · 02/10/2023 16:00

Wingspan was in the Amazon prime day deals in July so keep an eye in October… it is an amazing game and absolutely beautiful. I love the iPad version too.

I love Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket To Ride. azul is great, I also have the queens garden version that makes me happy.

if there will be a crowd of you, 7 wonders is excellent. If you and DH play a lot, then the two person version, Duel, has been my favourite game this year. Love it - it’s only 20 minutes but so many different strategies to use. We’ve also recently got Jaipur as a two person game.

Agricola is long and has lots of bits to it but I do enjoy it.

i am not a fan of powergrid.
