Board Games for a good games night

gaydad2b · 02/10/2023 14:35

DH and I have got very into board games recently after going to a board game cafe with friends. We try to host a bi monthly board game night at home now. Are there any suggestions for really good board games we could start to play? We played a great board game (can't remember what it's called) that focused on a haunted house and exploring different rooms until one of the players turns on everyone else. It was great fun! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also.. any ideas for nibbles would be great as I can never decide what food to do!

Azul is a great game for four people

Keep all the recommendations coming! In addition there any Christmas themed games anyone can recommend. Or any good games for a Christmas party?

Ticket to Ride,
Takenoko,
Monopoly with a timer - the winner is the richest when the alarm goes.
Risk: Lord of the Rings is fun and the ring reaching Mount Doom is an effective guillotine, but it is still likely to take more than one session to finish.

The Game of Thrones board game is surprisingly good.

Herd Mentality and Chameleon are two faves in our house. Or, if you want something silly running in the background - Don’t get got.

Please could you try and find out what this game is called OP. Sounds like something our family would enjoy.

Never mind, I found it. Looks good for Halloween games night.

I haven't rtft but we also have quite regular games nights at ours and some we've played recently that were big hits were throw throw avocado, exploding kittens, katan (but this is long!), canine chaos, and the classic that is Uno.

Sounds like you played betrayal at the house on the hill which is one of our favourites!

My family love Muffin Time, Coup, Sagrada, Deadlies and Scrawl.

Fluxx is fun, though some are better than others.
King of Tokyo

Who Knows Where? Is my absolute favourite, for those who are interested in travel / different parts of the world

Alargeoneplease89 · 03/10/2023 17:55

Beat that - so much fun

Loads of good suggestions already, so I'll just mention a website called board game arena. You can play loads of the ones mentioned there for free to see if you like them. I've used that to help with learning new games for board games nights I've organised and ran.

Some of games require a paid account to start a game, tho anyone with a free account can join the games that someone else started. A paid account really really cheap if you're in for the long haul, something like £25 a year, and only one of you will need to pay that for all the privileges as you can share an account if not always playing together.

Look at your local cafe, meetup etc for social nights. I go to a few to learn games from other people as much as the socialising aspect. That's another way to learn and play new games

Three simple games suggestions from me, all 2-4 player I think:
Canvas
Battle sheep
Marrakech

The best of Christmas game was surprisingly decent.

Santa banter and don't get got as well as articulate christmas go down well here

Alltheyearround · 03/10/2023 21:56

Cosmic Encounter
Dixit

APurpleSquirrel · 03/10/2023 22:22

DH & DB love board games, so I've got into them too & we have a few games nights through the year with friends too.
Favourites for me are:

Viticulture (about making wine!)
Munchkin
Skulls
Dune Imperium
Irish Gauge
Everdell

We've contributed to a Kickstarter campaign for a board game called Bontany - should be arriving soon!

cornflower21 · 03/10/2023 22:24

Ubongo!
We love it, always entertaining.

PhotoDad · 03/10/2023 22:28

Love boardgames! How many players, and how long should it last?

Played a few "legacy" games with the family. These are ones where you have an ongoing story that you play in bursts. Some of them are co-operative (everyone against the game) and they are an incredible experience. Pandemic Legacy is great, and plays over 12-24 sessions of one hour (ish) each.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/10/2023 22:29

I like Azul and splendor. 2-4 players, bit of Luch, bit of strategy, doesn't take forever.

PhotoDad · 03/10/2023 22:31

Also a couple of years ago we played "The King's Dilemma" over a Christmas holiday, which is like being the Small Council in Game of Thrones. Really need 4-5 players as it's all about intrigue and voting.

Our two current favourite one-hour competitive games are "A War of Whispers" and "Everdell."

GoatsareGOAT · 03/10/2023 22:35

Azul
Qwirkle
wingspan
Small World
Sagrada (so pretty!)
Kingdomino & expansions

rowantree1997 · 03/10/2023 22:37

Settlers of Catan
Ticket to ride
Codewords
Chameleon
Blokus
Dominion
Incan Gold
