Revolted by seeing others eat meat

I am struggling with this a little, and wondering how to deal with it.

I am just starting being vegan with veganuary, but have been a lifelong veggie. Never eaten meat and have no desire to. The idea of eating flesh disgusts me.

I however realise that others have different beliefs and respect that. I don't expect others to be veggie around me.

Last night I went out with a friend for dinner. He got a huge plate of meat (pretty much 2 dead birds) and was pulling apart at it with fingers. The smell and sight was revolting for me. I didn't say anything or do anything as I don't think it would have been right, but honestly it bothered me a lot, and it is still bothering me the next day.

Any idea how I can best manage this? I accept most of my friends aren't veggie. Should I not go out for dinner with them? Is it acceptable to suggest veggie places?

Ok I'll bite. Have you actually seen animals have sex? The male jumps on the female for a few seconds and its over. They're not humans. AI is also a quick procedure which doesn't particularly distress the animal.
It's not a violent assault like rape.

WiggyPig · 02/02/2018 13:37

hibble I think the best you can do is probably aim to eat at places like Indian restaurants if eating out where meat is often (not always) covered in sauce and cut into chunks. Or suggest veggie or vegan places, there are lots of really good ones.

It’s nothing akin to rape. Good grief that’s just so unbelievably insulting to rape survivors. Please think about what you’re saying before you come out with that sort of stuff.

You’re aware I presume of the wondrous variety of animal reproductive organs? Cats with barbed penises?

You’re committing an anthropomorphic error. I’m pretty disgusted if the vegan militants are using rape analogies. It’s horrificslly disrespectful to rape survivors.

Anatidae · 02/02/2018 13:43

Also having worked with animals and been armpit deep in a sheep (for life saving lambing purposes) I can assure you that the relevant anatomy is not even a bit bothered by artificial insemination. It’s quick and doesn’t bother them at all.

Utterly disgusted at the rape analogy. Shame on you.

I’m vegan and I agree with the above!

WiggyPig · 02/02/2018 13:46

Me too teetotal

Dazedandconfuzzled · 02/02/2018 13:51

There are a group of vegans that have been on the news a lot recently that have indeed being comparing artificial insemination with rape, calling farmers rapists etc. It does a massive disservice to veganism and doesn't help them in the slightest. By using 'facts' that are incorrect and not backed by science, by trying to compare farming to rape and slavery, and by showing up at supermarkets with pictures of dead animals they are giving vegans a bad name. Whereas in fact every vegan I know is lovely and understanding about other people's choices.

Peggy2479 · 02/02/2018 13:55

Anatidae Oh, seriously! Don't get all high and mighty.
If a man went up to a woman and inseminated her against her will, you would call it rape, because it is rape. And yet you are so far from seeing this from an animals perspective that you can't even see how hypocritical you are being.
I'm not sure if the people on this thread even understand artificial insemination. Humans aren't going up to cows and forcing them to mate.
Instead, farmers are passing the inseminated catheter through the spiral folds of the cows cervix into her uterus.
The restraining piece of apparatus is known by farmers as the "rape rack". This procedure is generally done 2-3 months after a cow has given birth, then the whole thing is repeated until they are no longer capable of giving birth/able to produce milk.
The fact that farmers call it a "rape rack" is enough evidence to show that it is rape.
To state that this is rape is not "unbelievably insulting" nor is it "horrifically disrespectful".
This has nothing to do with humans being raped, this is about animals. And the fact that you can't see that raping an animal is in fact possible is, rather worrying.

derxa · 02/02/2018 14:01

The restraining piece of apparatus is known by farmers as the "rape rack". It isn't

Peggy2479 · 02/02/2018 14:02
Hmmm... to me, these cows look bothered by the ordeal they have been subjected to.
Dazedandconfuzzled · 02/02/2018 14:02

I grew up surrounded by farmers they do NOT call it a rape rack. You have zero respect for people who disagree with You, you refuse to believe that your science is wrong. Farmers are people, they deserve respect, just because you don't agree with eating meat does not give you the right to call them rapists. My dad is a farmer, he is not a rapist and it is totally vile to compare the two. It is disrespectful to both rape victims and farmers. Cows literally don't notice, they are not traumatised by It. Have you ever been to a farm? Witnessed any cows ever at All? Do you know British welfare standards like the back of your hand? People like you give vegans a bad name.

Thehairthebod · 02/02/2018 14:02

Says who?

EggsonHeads · 02/02/2018 14:05

@peggy if a man artificially inseminated a woman against her will it would actually not be rape, just your run of the mill sexual assault. Have a read of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. Let me now if you find a provision that includes animals as potential victims.

WiggyPig · 02/02/2018 14:09

Eggson that would be s.69 then.

Thehairthebod · 02/02/2018 14:09

Does any female animal actually 'consent' to sex? Genuine question.

Peggy your posts are getting offensive now and you still haven't answered my question about whether you think humans eating animals is inherently wrong, or just in societies such as ours where you have a choice.

Dazedandconfuzzled · 02/02/2018 14:12

After seeing many animals mate I can honestly say that I don't think they consent in the way we do. It is a base instinct to mate, driven very much by hormones and evolution. Some animals choose their mates to get the best attributes etc but in the case of a lot of animals it's whichever male gets their first.

Anatidae · 02/02/2018 14:16

It’s not called a rape rack ffs. Who told you that? Some vegan propaganda website?

Have you ever even been on a farm? Seen animals inseminated? Have you ever handled large animals? A cow is a weighty and strong creature, capable of delivering a nasty kick - it’s totally against logic and all good practice to do anything that scares/hurts them. God the last thing you want is a shed full of pissed off cows.

You’ve been swallowing some serious propaganda. Try to think critically. This is what gives vegans a bad name. Can you not see the difference between artificially inseminating a cow and rape? Would you stand up in a room of rape survivors and say that?

A PETA link.

You weren't taught any critical thinking skills at school, were you?

"rape rack" ffs

WiggyPig · 02/02/2018 14:21

Anatidae I have seen some (albeit fortunately few) vegans stand up and do exactly that. Also drawing direct comparisons between the gassing of male chicks and the Holocaust, and between the slaughter of pigs and lynchings in the American south.

Usually followed by plaintive cries of "but I'm NOT racist and you're a big blue meanie for saying so! Just because I drew a direct comparison between animals and humans who have been oppressed by being dehumanised and compared to animals! In fact you're worse because you're a species-ist!"

Angry
Dazedandconfuzzled · 02/02/2018 14:21

I put PETA's science in the same box as Hoop and Gwyneth Paltrow. You need to read some actual scientific journals with peer reviewed studies. But it doesn't matter what we tell you cause you refuse to see past the end of your nose. You are highly offensive towards people that disagree with You, you refuse to engage in rational dialogue and ignore people's genuine questions. And you wonder why people end up not liking vegans

Dazedandconfuzzled · 02/02/2018 14:22

*Goop

Peggy2479 · 02/02/2018 14:26

Dazed
Not once have a I made my arguments about personal matters.
Yet reading over past comments they have all including a personal attack aimed at me or my education.
I have no reason to prove anything to you, but I received an excellent private education, I then went on to study A-levels at a well know UK college, now I am furthering my education at uni.
Please, leave out the personal attacks. They are unnecessary and give meat-eaters an extremely bad and childish name.

Thehairthebod · 02/02/2018 14:26

PETA? 😂
