Just what is there to do in and around Westgate, Kent?

Boys are 8 and 6. I'm sure they will be fine. They have sand.

But what can I do here other than be absorbed into a good book?

I like art and creative stuff.

Help please.

There's the turner gallery in margate. Also the shell grotto in margate is worth a look.

Along the coast the other way whitstable which is a lovely little town.

We stayed in broadstairs last year and there's not a huge amount to do but we found enough to keep us and the boys entertained.

Canterbury is good for the arts.
Sandwich is pretty.

NormanTheForeman · 29/07/2013 21:15

Go to Ramsgate and walk along the seafront in the direction of Broadstairs. There is a great gallery of art done by local people all along there, with local themes. It's excellent. Also, the Crampton Tower at Broadstairs might be worth visiting (haven't been myself but should do).

And yes to Turner gallery if you are arty, and shell grotto.

Its Oyster festival week in Whitstable, lots of events going on and plenty of local art about, well worth a visit, although you have missed Charles and Camilla's visit today (she was lovely) Grin
Herne Bay has got a lovely sea front, and lots of charity shops.

We were seduced here by an offer of free accommodation. We even came last year and I swore we wouldn't be back.

It's a line from withnail and I that we like to use.

Another one loving the title. Would like to see other threads started with titles around such nefarious things as Matter (I always see a full sink as containing matter) and shouted instructions to 'throw yourself into the road darling, you haven't got a chance!'

NormanTheForeman · 29/07/2013 21:27

Whitstable has an interesting little museum, and a castle (not very big, the grounds are open though). There is also a ruined castle at Reculver. Canterbury cathedral good to visit, but a bit pricey these days. You can get a nice little boat trip on the river at Canterbury though (small boat, but with a commentary).

NormanTheForeman · 29/07/2013 21:30

If you like steam railways, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch one is good, and there is a lighthouse you can go up at Dungeness too. Also some arty gardens there, including the one of the late Derek Jarman I think (film director).

You'll be fine after a small, rhesus negative, Bloody Mary. ;-)

uggmum · 29/07/2013 21:39

We went to Wildwood Animal Park. The animals are lovely and it has a fab play area. Really worth a visit.

BeaLola · 30/07/2013 00:19

Assuming you have a car and willing to travel little my suggestions

Romney Hythe & Dymchurch RAilway
Port lympne or howletts - latter more likely to see animals out and about
Whitstable
Canterbury
Folkestone leas - large play area with zip wires fort etc
Dover castle
Margate if fancy Turner gallery

If you fancy driving further Chatham Dockyard

Look out for the 241 offers on visit Kent and railway days out in south east

nevergoogle · 30/07/2013 21:15

Weather was drab today so we ventured to Whitstable for fish and chips. Lovely.

Tomorrow the turner gallery.

Thanks.

Broadstairs has a tiny cinema and a Dickens museum. And a marvellous ice cream parlour - Morelli's.
