I think, and I may be wrong here but I think all three had some sort of ties to the crime. What exactly, I don't know. I think that your idea of it being both brothers is probably likely the case and for some reason the tutor got involved as well, either during or after...

You may be right, as both brothers and the tutor changed their stories several times and neither had proper alibis. I just don't understand the motive in this case. No one reported that there was any kind of fight or argument at the party. Martha was friends with the brothers (and may have fooled around with Tommy). The tutor didn't even know her. To go from absolutely normal hang out with friends to being so brutally beaten and deliberately stabbed in the neck with the golf club to ensure she was dead, just seems unbelievable and such a personal attack. Such a waste of a beautiful talented girl from a really nice family. Her mother and brother have been so stoic and dignified throughout this.

I think I’d call that a crime rather than a true crime story. The latter is a dramatisation based on a crime.

I know that sounds pedantic but there’s something a bit distasteful about describing the murder of someone as a true crime story. I appreciate you aren’t intending to minimise it.

That's exactly what I was about to post. The title of the thread makes it sound like entertainment, rather than someone's tragedy.

The Lord Lucan story

Neville Heath. He was hanged 2 days before my birthday.

There was a skipping game in our primary school about Lizzie Borden.

The Moors Murders. I was 11 so 1964. I'd read about them in the school library, and went home and told my Mum. She burst into tears and said she'd hoped I'd never had to hear about anything so awful.

Jack the Ripper.

I remember the Moors Murderers constantly being on the news (appeals, her out on the moors with the police). I remember Peter Sutcliffe because I was a little kid when he was caught.

Black Panther because we lived close to where the post master was was killed and my friend's dad was a detective on the investigation.

Also my dad's friend was a police officer and his partner was killed by Barry Prudom in 1982.

Julie Perigo - a lady brutally murdered in my street when I was 8. The police had incident porta cabins on the path ear my house for weeks. They interviewed my brother about it as he'd seen someone near her house.

They've never found her killer.

The disappearance and murder of Susan Maxwell. We were the same age and had the same name. It was the first time I realised children could disappear

Caroline Hogg. She went missing in 1983 when she was 5 in Portobello, a suburb of Edinburgh. I was 6 and we lived in Edinburgh too. I remember my parents talking about how awful it was and I recall not being allowed to go to the local park on my own anymore.
Robert Black was convicted of her murder and that of Susan Maxwell, Jennifer Cardy, in 1994.

I was coming on to say the same. Was 7 or 8 at the time and growing up in Edinburgh. Grandparents lived in Leith so knew Portobello well. Very sad.

“True crime story” sounds like a way of trivialising real crimes with very real victims. Most of the examples people have given are very much horrific crimes.

Jamie Bulger, I was about a year older than the boys who killed him and remember everyone in my class at school being horrified about it

You’ve got a great memory! It was over 100 years ago! Surely you don’t remember it?
