I don’t often post here but I always read. I’ve just turned 69 and have only been weight training for a year, literally never even tried anything till then. Saw myself on a security cam and was horrified that I was shuffling and saying ‘ooph’ when I got out of a chair. Started to work with a personal trainer 3 times a week. And today I deadlifted 110kg!

BarBellBarbie · 10/06/2025 20:28

That is totally amazing!

AllAboutTheWrinkles · 10/06/2025 20:37

Thank you! I’m totally exhausted to my core tonight but so delighted. Still can’t believe it. Have been chasing 100 on my last two tests and kept missing, last time by only a couple of kg. Today I sailed past it.

AND I’ve got muscles popping out everywhere. It’s unbelievable (to me!).

Coming back to say seriously impressive and I'm going to keep you in mind as my inspiration! I've just decided, at 49, to get properly back into weight training again.

Amazing!

Codlingmoths · 11/06/2025 01:00

Wow! I’m a healthy 42 and posted recently about weights. I can’t imagine being able to do that, but putting it as major goals for 20 years time!!

I’m 78kg and 5foot 7. I’ve put on about 4kg since I started which I’m trying not to panic about but I’m the same dress size and an entirely different shape.

Thanks everyone, I knew you’d all get it 😀. I slept like a baby last night but I’m still on a high this morning. And still quite tired! I keep looking at my video with amazement though. Can’t quite believe I’ve done that. I’ve been phenomenally fortunate with my trainer she has managed throughout to be very encouraging without making me feel bullied. She realised how scared and doubting I was at the beginning and helped me work past that and is super-organised with my training and relentless about good form. She has also never treated me like I was ready to break, I saw a few trainers before I settled on her and they almost backed away in fear . I know I’ve very lucky be be able to afford it as 3 times a week 121 has been a big financial commitment. As a couple we agreed to prioritise my training over other stuff but we could still afford to metaphorically and actually keep the heating on and don’t underestimate how lucky that makes me. I just decided though that if I wanted to halt a sudden but horrifying slump into fragile older person I needed to take action and I didn’t have time to take it slowly, I needed to be serious and do whatever it took. As well as the trainer I’m in the gym another twice a week on my own and I stay on after my sessions with her to do cardio. Getting me strong has been a retirement project for sure!

the next step is to sort out my bench press which I’m still not good at although my back squat has also improved a lot in the last few weeks. But today it will be a gentle walk only. And cake after lots of protein!

That's incredible and really inspirational, congratulations! I am about to rejoin a weights gym after a big gap and can't wait. I'm 20 years younger than you, but am also on a mission to get strong as I age and try to avoid muscle loss and 'slowing down' too much as I have seen my parents deteriorate pretty rapidly. Brilliant that you are prioritising your training and 110k deadline is amazing!

erinaceus · 12/06/2025 20:23

That’s great 💪🏼 well done.

Have you considered competing / doing a meet?
