Noises. Loft hatch opening and closing on its own….

So we have lived here 6 years. It’s a detached house. Things have been freaky on and off, shadows seen, noises heard, an awful feeling that someone is right there! But it all stopped and everything was fine until a few weeks ago, there is my partner, me, our dog, our other dog passed away sadly last year, and my children. These noises started up again, I recently found out also I’m pregnant and it seams to be since then how ever I’m sure my partner just thinks I’m going crazy but then he heard the noises too. So they are like taps on the walls, bangs, usually upstairs and we have heard them when we are upstairs. So a week ago we heard a loud noise and went upstairs and the loft hatch had opened and was only half covering the hole, it’s only a piece of wood that would need pushed up and moved aside to gain access to the loft, so we left it as it’s high and nobody can reach, we live in a detached house so the idea of a Neighbour walking through the lofts is impossible. Today I’m home alone and hear noises again and the loft hatch has moved back over and closed on its own!

I’m really quite freaked out. Iv also heard footsteps just now as I’m typing this. My dog is sitting right beside me as he always is he never leaves my side so it’s not him and the noises are more apparent when the kids are at school and it’s either just me or me and my partner and we both hear them together.

What could be going on? Is the house about to fall down? Could a ghost be in the house or is that a crazy thought? And why could the loft hatch be opening and closing on its own ?

A stupid thought crossed my mind of someone sneaking into my house, hiding in the loft and coming down and eating our food while we are out. But that’s just insane lol. I’m really quite freaked out by it all!

You've got rats in the roof. And they have come in through the same place the wind is getting in.

I know you will say not it's not rats. I called out security during the night as I was convinced someone was in the roof. Yip, it was a rat.

Getting rid of it is a whole bloody thread in itself as it was a ratzilla. But they make one hell of a noise for such a small creature

@TellMeMoreHellebore

why does the DH have to go up? are women not capable?
@TellMeMoreHellebore op is pregnant and has a partner who can do it, so it makes sense, no,
ohmylordylord · 04/03/2022 19:59

Is he home yet

spacehardware · 04/03/2022 20:00

It's not a ghost because they don't exist

It could be a person in your loft, but as you say it's a very low crawl space type height it seems unlikely. It's probably rats

I would not send husband up alone just in case. But it's not a ghost

spacehardware · 04/03/2022 20:01

I would also be fitting a bolt to the outside of the hatch

It doesn’t matter who goes up but I think there needs to be two people.

If there’s the slimmest chance there’s a squatter up there then it’s not safe. And more likely it could be loose tiles or floorboards which can be dangerous, so having an extra person on hand is important.

WonderfulYou · 04/03/2022 20:35

How old are your children?

I feel like one of them could have brought a puppy or something home and is secretly feeding it.

As a somewhat psychic person since a young child I can assure you that spirit energy does exist but ghosts don't hang around doing this kind of thing.

You just left it? 😳

The loud noise does make it seem like it might have been a draft as you would expect that, the wood being lifting up and crashing down again.

Waiting for the update....

Watching to find out if there is someone in your loft Shock also, you just LEFT IT. are you a maniac? Well on the plus side if it is someone in your loft they probably don't have murderous intentions or you'd be a gonna already

Loving the plus side!Grin

It'll be rats or mice and the wind will be making the loft hatch open and close. Sounds like a tile is loose.

Yerroblemom1923 · 05/03/2022 09:16

It'll be rats or squirrels. They make a right noise. Just pop up and have a look. Chances of someone "living in your loft" are pretty slim, despite what Mumsnetters might believe!

CatDogMonkeyPOW · 05/03/2022 09:16

My loft hatch randomly moves when it's windy and we have a brand new roof!

GeneLovesJezebel · 05/03/2022 09:18

Wind will lift and drop the loft hatch. You need to get it locked down.

SonicBroom · 05/03/2022 09:20

Did you go up??

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/03/2022 09:20

If it's just a crawl space, there logically can't be footsteps for you to hear as no one can stand up. Rodents sound VERY loud, I could hear them from downstairs when we had them in our loft space.

BettyOBarley · 05/03/2022 09:22

Your husband needs to get a ladder up there and have a look!

Seen as it's been very windy recently it could just have moved the hatch / things are blowing about up there which would explain the noises.

My friends neighbour did actually keep entering her house through their loft, he ended up going to jail.. (but that was a semi and I know you're detached!)

FoxBaseBeta · 05/03/2022 09:24

We had mice in the loft in our old house, sounded like a herd of elephants up there. We thought someone had broken in when we first heard them Grin

Wagsandclaws · 05/03/2022 09:53

In our old house we had the loft hatch lift and it moved halfway across when it was windy.

Women v capable. But also sensible. Better to send the husband up, just in case it does turn out to be an axe murderer... Grin
FurryBandito · 07/03/2022 20:08

My loft hatch blows off its latch and moves, sometimes diagonally, across the loft hatch. We have also had rats in the loft (different house ) and it really sounded like someone walking around up there. It sounded quite eerie at times and ridiculously loud for such small critters. I think your DH should go take a look not because he’s in any way superior but because your pregnant and your centre of gravity shifts and you might be a bit wobbly .
