Noises. Loft hatch opening and closing on its own….

So we have lived here 6 years. It’s a detached house. Things have been freaky on and off, shadows seen, noises heard, an awful feeling that someone is right there! But it all stopped and everything was fine until a few weeks ago, there is my partner, me, our dog, our other dog passed away sadly last year, and my children. These noises started up again, I recently found out also I’m pregnant and it seams to be since then how ever I’m sure my partner just thinks I’m going crazy but then he heard the noises too. So they are like taps on the walls, bangs, usually upstairs and we have heard them when we are upstairs. So a week ago we heard a loud noise and went upstairs and the loft hatch had opened and was only half covering the hole, it’s only a piece of wood that would need pushed up and moved aside to gain access to the loft, so we left it as it’s high and nobody can reach, we live in a detached house so the idea of a Neighbour walking through the lofts is impossible. Today I’m home alone and hear noises again and the loft hatch has moved back over and closed on its own!

I’m really quite freaked out. Iv also heard footsteps just now as I’m typing this. My dog is sitting right beside me as he always is he never leaves my side so it’s not him and the noises are more apparent when the kids are at school and it’s either just me or me and my partner and we both hear them together.

What could be going on? Is the house about to fall down? Could a ghost be in the house or is that a crazy thought? And why could the loft hatch be opening and closing on its own ?

A stupid thought crossed my mind of someone sneaking into my house, hiding in the loft and coming down and eating our food while we are out. But that’s just insane lol. I’m really quite freaked out by it all!

Someone is living in your loft

Tbh thats what came to my mind too! Probably watched too many movies though! Can you get your partner to go up there and take a look?
It’s horrible to feel uncomfortable in your home, hopefully nothing comes of it and it’ll settle down on its own over time.

PriamFarrl · 04/03/2022 12:46

Ooh. Could you have a lose tile which means that the wind is rattling stuff in the attic?

thatsnotmybus · 04/03/2022 12:46

The idea of someone living in your loft seems less insane than it being a ghost.

Have you looked in the loft?

TellMeMoreHellebore · 04/03/2022 12:47

Don't worry it's not haunted or supernatural events! It's just someone living up in your loft!

TellMeMoreHellebore · 04/03/2022 12:47

Get up and have a look!

Elsiebear90 · 04/03/2022 12:48

The only things I can think of are either someone is living in your loft or as the previous poster said, it’s the wind coming into your loft through the roof. I would get your husband to get a torch and have a look up there.

Nikki037297 · 04/03/2022 12:48

No we haven’t looked in there but it is a very low loft as an electrician had to go up there a few years back and he said he had to crawl. Possibly a loose tile but we have had any wind at all the weather is rainy but very still. My partner is at work until late but I can get him to get the ladders out and climb up there when he’s home as I feel really freaked out

Did the electrician leave? It could be him!!

Notanotherwindow · 04/03/2022 12:52

Our loft hatch is exactly the same and opens when it's windy. The wind comes through the eaves in the loft and lifts the hatch up. I've seen it do it.

It's not insane at all...

I read about a school that had someone living in the roof. They had to close the school until they could find him!

JellybabyGina87 · 04/03/2022 19:18

Mice/ rats.

user1471530109 · 04/03/2022 19:20

@fudgecat Grin Grin Grin

OP, I'm impressed you're still sat in your house. I'd be finding something I desperately had to do all day that involved being out Blush

ballsdeep · 04/03/2022 19:21

We had all those storms a few weeks ago, it could have ztarted it again

Spaghettihooplas · 04/03/2022 19:22

Did you look in the loft yet?

5zeds · 04/03/2022 19:22

Rats

FindingMeno · 04/03/2022 19:23

Your partner needs to look in the loft, not you!
I would consider looking for droppings.
Then I'd fit bolts/ padlock to the hatch.
No explanation unless it's squirrels in the loft moving the hatch.

KylieCharlene · 04/03/2022 19:24

Your DH needs to be very careful when he goes up to investigate Incase the person up there isn't too happy at being uncovered.
I'd rally friends.

Thecazelets · 04/03/2022 19:35

Wind lifting the hatch, possibly due to a tile shifting or falling off in recent storms, would be my guess.

TheUsualChaos · 04/03/2022 19:43

Yep, that would freak the shit out of me but logically its sounds like the draft is creating a vacuum effect and lifting the loft hatch.

TellMeMoreHellebore · 04/03/2022 19:43

why does the DH have to go up? are women not capable?

Wingingit15 · 04/03/2022 19:47

Update please op!

JangolinaPitt · 04/03/2022 19:52

Well this has certain inspired me to put a padlock on my loft hatch.
