Help me with an explanation for this - possible ghost?

My (extremely rational usually) friend has recently moved into a flat where objects have started being moved around when she is out.
The last thing that happened was two LED lights clicking on simultaneously, two of those letters with lights in them, that have batteries and aren't linked to each other or the electrics. Her son and her witnessed it.
I want there to be a rational explanation for this but can't think of one. She is now convinced and is getting a priest in.
Can anyone think of anything rational/scientific?

Is it only the book that moved?

MitziK · 26/03/2019 19:14

Beetlejuice.

Arcadia · 26/03/2019 19:23

Justonemore one object in each room was moved whilst she was out, working through from the back to the front room (apart from her son's room) on different days.

Maybe the former owner had a cleaner and the owner forgot to tell them she'd moved out!

Constructive is coming up with ideas as to how two unconnected lights would turn themselves on simultaneously.

You've already been given ideas. Sometimes electric and battery operated lights go on the fritz and switch on it off unexpectedly. Maybe it happens several thousand times a year over all the households in the UK. If you own more than one light then it is possible that coincidentally more than one could malfunction. Maybe a few hundred times. That 2 could malfunction at the same time will be even less common. However statistically it is likely that at some point two lights will malfunction at the same time.

Statistics and coincidence are hard to get our minds round. E.g. if you choose 1 2 3 4 5 and 6 as your lottery numbers they are just as likely to come up as any other 6 numbers chosen from those on offer but we would probably be very surprised if it did happen.

waffly the thread has moved on now and someone has come up with the timer switch thing now which has helped a lot and explained it for me.

wafflyversatile · 26/03/2019 22:19

Ah yes. I have fairy lights that switch off after a few hours and come back on the next night.

Arcadia · 26/03/2019 22:45

My friend seems attached to the ghost idea so I'll leave her to it, but I have my explanation now so thank you!

Well done Avallamp 👏🏻

Can't believe they were probably on a timer 🤣

Well, I believe in all things woo, having had lots of experiences I can't explain, but it sounds as if it's likely to be a dodgy wire or two, or appliances coming to the end of their lives, or water has got in somehow and is messing with the electrics. I once lived in a flat where the ever-so-posh-looking little light bulbs decided to explode over my computer and scorch the carpet underneath. Luckily I was in the kitchen at the time or it would have been very nasty. That's new build flats for you, where they value style over substance. There were six different light fittings in that flat, of which I think four have now been discontinued.

If she wants a quick temporary fix to make herself feel better about ghosts, if she gets some rock salt and sprinkles it round the perimeter of her place, leaves it for a day, then says the Lord's Prayer or whatever blessing will work for her in each room, and then hoovers up the salt, bags up the contents of the hoover and bins it, that will help a bit. I could suggest other incenses and candle ceremonies and things but if she's getting a priest in anyway it's likely that's the kind of thing he or she will do.

Arcadia · 30/03/2019 17:10

Thanks.
There's been some further developments and she's had the priest round. I got a bit of stuck on this thread though so might start a thread on 'the unexplained' or ask to move this one if anyone is interested.

Why? Does the priest moonlight as an electrician?

Arcadia · 31/03/2019 18:44

There's been other stuff - happening not electrical - as I said before it's easy to be sarcastic isn't it.

Oh lordy, I choked reading that and my biggest dog is very upset and concerned at my laughing and choking. Grin

Palominoo · 31/03/2019 19:06

What has happened now, op?

Arcadia · 31/03/2019 19:26

I'm getting sick of people's unfunny sarcastic comments. I'm worried about my friend and much as I didn't believe I am starting to because she isn't mad ... so I'm either going to get this thread moved or start a new one, for those who are genuinely interested, in 'the unexplained'.

OP posts:
LilyMumsnet · 31/03/2019 19:29

OP - we'll move this over to the unexplained now. Flowers

KissingInTheRain · 31/03/2019 19:43

The only thing unexplained on this thread is whether or not the priest has a City & Guilds in Electrical Installation.

Justonemorepancake · 31/03/2019 19:45

In the unexplained now so save your sarky comments for AIBU threads people!
I'm genuinely interested OP - what's happened to insitgate the priest? Has he been round yet? Does she feel better about it?

Arcadia · 31/03/2019 20:02

kissingintherain you clearly haven't read the thread properly as it has nothing to do with the electrics in the flat.

justonemore thanks for your post.

Is there a way of posting pics temporarily as I have some my friend sent me but don't want to put them up long term as I haven't checked with her.

We had a haunted house in our family. It was my Great Aunt Christine who died from leukaemia when she was 14 back in the 20s.

I have sympathy for your friend OP. Things really kicked off with the family home when the last of Christine's siblings died. Change seems to be a trigger.

Lisette1940 · 31/03/2019 20:09

Could you put the pictures on your profile and then you could take them down as you wish?

Lisette1940 · 31/03/2019 20:13

It was the new Tennant's who reported stuff moving and electrical things coming on by themselves like the cooker and lights. Also feeling you weren't alone and cold spots. I'd experienced that in one of the rooms and didn't like to linger there. I never saw Christine but others did.
