Help me with an explanation for this - possible ghost?

My (extremely rational usually) friend has recently moved into a flat where objects have started being moved around when she is out.
The last thing that happened was two LED lights clicking on simultaneously, two of those letters with lights in them, that have batteries and aren't linked to each other or the electrics. Her son and her witnessed it.
I want there to be a rational explanation for this but can't think of one. She is now convinced and is getting a priest in.
Can anyone think of anything rational/scientific?

If one electrical item can go on the fritz then two can go on the fritz.

For all those chortling at the idea of a priest, every Diocese in the Church of England has an exorcist.

Our old vicar said he had had to consult our local one a couple of times.

We once had a Bertie the Bus toy that my Dad had picked up from a boot fair - it was very old, from about the time when the original TV series was made. It said various of Bertie's phrases from the episodes he was in in the first series each time you pressed a button, a bit like Woody in Toy Story has his set phrases on a loop.

One day I had chucked him in the toy box and he suddenly just started reciting all the names of the engines: "Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy . . ." and so on. A long list. In Ringo Starr's voice. Confused It was highly unnerving. No matter what I tried I never got him to do it again. But, sorry, I really do think it was a weird electronic glitch.

Dear old Dertie Da Duss (as DS used to call him), I wonder what happened to him.

Oh, in that case... Hmm

JustAnotherPoster00 · 26/03/2019 07:37

So someone who believes in something that doesnt exist will come round to your house to tell the other thing that doesnt exist to leave in the name of something that doesnt exist Hmm

I bet thats not cheap

AliceAforethought · 26/03/2019 07:42

If your friend is actually wanting a priest in tell her to try asking 'them' to stop and that she lives there now and to please respect it before she gets a priest. Honestly its how a lot of people with this problem solve it

Yes, I’ve heard this before. It “works” exactly the same way as those exorcists from our local dioceses work: with the power of suggestion and belief.
Those “official” exorcists are there purely to calm down —gullible— sensitive parishioners. The rest of us would probably call an electrician or something.

MyKingdomForBrie · 26/03/2019 07:53

Tell her to sit down and have a chat with the spirit, it's likely to have enough of a psychological effect on her to make her feel comfortable again.

Though I'm sure there are things about the dimensions and possibilities of our planet that we do not understand I'm also fairly sure that it's highly unlikely to the be 'spirits' of people who have died.

BalloonSlayer · 26/03/2019 07:57

Of course it's not cheap . . . it's free.

RoseAndRose · 26/03/2019 07:57

Why don't you tel, her it's the serial killer living in the secret compartment in the wall (or attic or cellar)

She"ll never mention ghosts again!

Palominoo · 26/03/2019 08:12

Pop round with a dvd/film to cheer your friend up.

FoxSquadKitten · 26/03/2019 16:56

it still seems weird that both lights turned in simultaneously when they are completely separate

Do you think that maybe, and sorry I really don't like saying this....but do you think it could possibly be......a coincidence? 😱😱😱👀

Arcadia · 26/03/2019 17:49

Yes it's easy to be sarcastic isn't it.
Thanks to those who have been constructive.

“For all those chortling at the idea of a priest, every Diocese in the Church of England has an exorcist.“
I’m not surprised- look at all the other crap they believe!

BertrandRussell · 26/03/2019 18:02

“Yes it's easy to be sarcastic isn't it.

So “constructive” is “yes it’s definitely ghosts”?

Palominoo · 26/03/2019 18:07

Op, what do you want us all to say?

This is a general chat board.

If you wanted more supernatural themed responses you should have posted on Ghostnet.

Arcadia · 26/03/2019 18:14

Constructive is coming up with ideas as to how two unconnected lights would turn themselves on simultaneously.

BertrandRussell · 26/03/2019 18:18

Batteries bought at the same time failing at the same time. Coincidence. Coincidences happen all the time.
They actually both have a dodgy connection and turn themselves in and off all the time but she only notices when they do it simultaneously.

There you go. 3 ideas. All of them more likely than a ghost trying to attract attention by turning lights on.

Palominoo · 26/03/2019 18:19

How about the times you've thought about someone you've not seen in ages and you bump into them that day?

It's called coincidence. Nothing woo or telepathic!

Sometimes random things happen that have no rhyme or reason.

Two lights turning on at the same time is really not the most unusual thing at all.

Avallamp · 26/03/2019 18:32

I have some led candles. They have a two way on off switch. Press the switch one way, and it sets it onto a 24 hr timer, with the candle being lot for 6 hrs, and off for 18.

I didn't realise, turned them on, they must have turned off without me realising, and then they turned on at the same time I'd previously turned them on the next day. Took me a while to work it out.

Could be that those letters have a similar timer?

Avallamp · 26/03/2019 18:36

These on amazon have a timer like I describe above...

Festive Lights Light Up Letters - Warm White LEDs - Battery Operated - 16cm by (E) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01JACF09E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_peNMCbSSMM1Y5?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Avallamp · 26/03/2019 18:40

From the amazon description...

Timer Function! These letters feature an in-built timer, meaning when you turn them on they will automatically stay on for 6 hours, turn themselves off for 18 hours and back on the same time next day!

Arcadia · 26/03/2019 18:45

Thanks that's really helpful to the timer function I'll let her know

OP posts:
Arcadia · 26/03/2019 19:05

She has replied that she hadn't had them on but I think they could have got knocked or something to activate the timer function and it's far more likely. Or child fiddling with them earlier.
The stuff being moved around was only before she fitted the secure side gate lock and camera, so could have been previous owner (odd and creepy behaviour but more rational explanation!).
She's getting new doors and windows fitted soon so will be even more secure.
She would rather it was a ghost than someone coming in so isn't changing her mind, so I will humour her, but I am now clear in my mind, so thanks for your help! (Not in a hurry to sleep over though)Grin

OP posts:
Palominoo · 26/03/2019 19:07

Let's hope it's just a timer function and not Bettlejuice.

Palominoo · 26/03/2019 19:08

Beetlejuice. ^
