You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

@DreamingofBrie

Just curious. What do people buy as retail therapy when they are low? I've just ordered loads of books for dc, but my other go tos would be yarn and gin Hmm.
I buy craft stuff. I have far more craft supplies than I could ever use. It started with just yarn and crochet hooks, then I branched out into knitting, then diamond painting, watercolor painting, needle felting, pyrography (?!), Soap making, candle making, paint by numbers. It seems like when I'm stressed I think these things would be great for destressing, but I forget that I'm stressed because I have no time for fun activities

I volunteer in a charity shop and every so often someone brings in a sack of perfect clothes in my size Smile, that always feels like a bonus! We sell tops for £3.50 - £5 typically and I got a pair of jeans (short, boot cut, size 12) for a fiver, which was brilliant as the holes in mine had just about become indecent Grin.

Ds has said he'll spend some time crocheting with me this afternoon. That makes me happy. He has had a shitty time of it in school recently.

Agree with this completely!

Retail therapy for me also includes the pocketed dresses though I have only bought one this year.

Stationery. I also have a bit of a thing for jumpers.

Appuskidu · 15/05/2021 11:22

Dresses with pockets, plants and books are my comfort purchases

Definitely-me too on all counts! All dresses should have pockets.

Hope you’re OK @HarrietDVane. I had second Pfizer yesterday. Tender arm but that’s all at present. Last time I started feeling cold and a bit off after maybe 28 hours, but was fine the next day. Others have reported the cold feeling too.

MrsHamlet · 15/05/2021 11:35

More than one pair of shoes, I hasten to add. And all ones I'd wear as part of the regular rota. I don't need more shoes. I have plenty. But I have to wear shoes every day....

Travel is my big splurge. I miss travelling so much.

HarrietDVane · 15/05/2021 11:36

Thanks Jan. I'm ok at the moment - I feel slightly 'prickly' but this is also something that happens when I get anxious and panicky so I think it's probably down to nerves. I got up ridiculously early to finish my marking off before the appointment so I'm also really tired. I have plenty of other work to do this weekend but it can wait if I'm not well; the marking sadly couldn't.

motherrunner · 15/05/2021 11:55

I spend an awful amount of money on books for me and the DC. Nothing beats an actual book - I will never be converted to a Kindle. Doesn’t feel right.

Got my second jab this afternoon. Hope I’m not as ill as before. DH had AZ Tuesday and didn’t even feel tired. Fucker.

Beachhuts90 · 15/05/2021 12:00

Books, dresses, journals.

I feel like I've been hit by a bus today. Combination of being tired from work, a little tumble down my stairs on Thursday, and various other things I think. Going to try to make a dent in my library books this weekend.

I'm our house it's musical instruments. We could furnish an orchestra, no joke.

DH buys tech for his retail therapy - I don't think he even realises he's doing it! 😂 For me it's pretty dresses (that I have nowhere to wear), cross stitch kits and baking stuff. I have more icing cutters than you can shake a rolling pin at (and four rolling pins with which to do the shaking)

Piggywaspushed · 15/05/2021 13:48

Books, dresses. Used to be shoes but not do much now.

My body shape has changed and nothing fits so now I have to buy stuff.

DollyMixtureLulus · 15/05/2021 13:50

I quite fancy cross stitch. What do you do when you’ve finished the pattern?

eitak22 · 15/05/2021 13:55

I tend to stitch cards and then gift them. I've got a big one I'm currently doing that I hope to frame.
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 15/05/2021 14:01

I roll them up and they get stored... So I've stopped doing them. I want to sew more, but I need a big table. Once the work onour house is finished I'll get the spare room back for my desk, so will get the table.

I've had a headache today again. That's 2 days in a row. I'm not a headachey person, so think it's probably vaccine related. Got up at half 6 this morning because I was awake, went for a walk for an hour and a half all on my own. Was lovely.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/05/2021 14:20

Vaccinated, finally.
Phew.

Mistressiggi · 15/05/2021 14:22

That's good news 👍

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 15/05/2021 14:37

@DrMadelineMaxwell I bet you sleep well tonight. It's a weird relief feeling.

ArnottsUnderpass · 15/05/2021 14:38

Oh and plants for me too. Love my garden when I get ruddy time. Have a few hours sorting out the front garden in the rain today before I settle in with the marking

HarrietDVane · 15/05/2021 14:48

That's good news @DrMadelineMaxwell - which vaccine did you have? Hope you're feeling ok.

Beachhuts90 · 15/05/2021 15:48

Beachhuts, hope you're feeling better soon

Thanks! Think it's just been one of those weeks, you know?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/05/2021 15:57

Over 40 so got the AZ.

HarrietDVane · 15/05/2021 16:28

Hope you're feeling well, DrMadeleine - I'm late 40s but had the Pfizer. I didn't mind either way, really. Just glad to get jabbed after so long working unprotected in school.
