You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

I'd like some other opinions on this if possible.

For evidence one of our departments has put a summary sheet of assessment scores (6 papers) along with 2 actual papers.

SLT view this as 3 pieces of evidence. The department view it as 8. Who is correct?

Piggywaspushed · 27/04/2021 17:45

Oh, that poor woman. So sad.

4 cases at DS's sixth form now, all PCR confirmed. Meanwhile at my place we too continue to pretend it's all fine and won't confront issues over sixth form mask wearing.

MrsHamlet · 27/04/2021 17:47

6+2=8

Unless my maths is very wonky.

Are they incomplete papers? Is that where the working out goes funny?

chocolateisavegetable · 27/04/2021 17:52

That story about Donna makes me so sad and very angry. Her poor, poor family Sad

MsAwesomeDragon · 27/04/2021 18:04

herc is the SLT thinking that the summary of assessment results is only 1 but if evidence because those papers can't be produced? If the papers can be produced then possibly they would want the department to produce the actual papers rather than just the results. I would be happy with a summary of results, but SLT may well be thinking about how they can be absolutely water tight in case of appeal. How many bits of evidence do they want from each department?

Piggywaspushed · 27/04/2021 18:04

I suppose the SLT think it is three different 'types' of evidence. Even though it isn't.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 27/04/2021 18:14

JCQ have said that anything pre March doesn't need to be produced. We only have one lever arch file per class so 32x2 mock papers and they are already full so not sure where we're supposed to put them.

What are other maths depts doing?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 27/04/2021 18:19

Wow, that Guardian article is damning isn't it. Sums it up really well, but is a shocking read - like I'm reading something that happened to other people.

MsAwesomeDragon · 27/04/2021 18:23

We're doing 5 shorter tests over this half term, which is pretty much a full set of past papers chopped up differently so we can fit them into an hour's lesson. We're also putting in mock results, but have those physical papers in school so we can produce them if we need to.

borntobequiet · 27/04/2021 19:10

That poor woman. I have to say that even if I felt personally unsafe at work - up to 12 adults from different employment sectors, a different set each week, 4 days x 6 hours, not allowed to require mask wearing (though I did require it), etc, etc, - otherwise my employer enforced physical distancing (max 4 in a room unless a classroom ), had an OK one way system and vetoed any social events, and would appear a paragon of virtue when compared to Burnley College.
However I still can’t get over their reluctance to move to my alternative model of delivery, which would have been safer, better for learners, more efficient and cost-effective and easily adapted to future events. Never mind. I’m enjoying not having to go to work, for the moment at least.

MrsHamlet · 27/04/2021 19:15

JCQ have said that anything pre March doesn't need to be produced.

Herc which of the eleventy million documents is that in please?

I have a student who has done all the bloody assessments but one is missing and it's the end of the world. He did it in the first term of year 10!!!

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 27/04/2021 19:42

www.jcq.org.uk/summer-2021-arrangements/

Under retention of evidence. If it's not available the mark can be used. We have the majority of the papers but no way will they fit in the SLT designated file.

MrsHamlet · 27/04/2021 19:45

Thanks Herc

This has been filed under "ways MrsH is unprofessional" alongside "politely requesting that the 6 uncalendared meetings are not all on the same day of the week because she has commitments"

CallmeHendricks · 27/04/2021 20:16

Well, I've just discovered I've been underpaid for the last 2 and a half years! What are the chances of/ how long might it be before getting any sort of settlement?

noblegiraffe · 27/04/2021 20:17

We're basing grades on mini assessments only. Our mocks were a shambles due to rampant covid. The thought of dredging up work from Y10 is horrifying, our kids do a lot of growing up between Y10 and 11.

noblegiraffe · 27/04/2021 20:18

Dunno Ange but when you are finally paid, the drinks are on you.

How did they manage that?

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 27/04/2021 20:22

We got a good 3 paper mock with decent grades pre xmas which would be silly to ignore. Seems the SLT computer says no unless it fits in the file...

MrsHamlet · 27/04/2021 20:24

Our SLT are having similar "fitting the file" issues. There is some debate about the art and the DT and whether they have to photograph the work for the folder...

TheHoneyBadger · 27/04/2021 20:25

Anyone else having an issue where you can't bookmark? I click bookmark and it just takes me to the top of the page.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 27/04/2021 20:26

"Come and look at how we've done it in History/English/Sociology".

No thanks.

Got asked "can you give them an exam question at each grade?"
Me "a single exam question per grade" Hmm
Inwardly I was screaming.

Then "give them a big mark question, mark it and use that"
Me "most I've ever seen is a 6 marker"
SLT "oh that's not like History"

CallmeHendricks · 27/04/2021 20:27

@noblegiraffe

Dunno Ange but when you are finally paid, the drinks are on you.

How did they manage that?

Knocked me down from UPS2 to UPS 1 when our county abolished the number categories and just used a "range from" minimum to maximum.
MrsHamlet · 27/04/2021 20:28

It's become apparent this week that the people in charge of exams don't know much about exams...

namechangedyetagain · 27/04/2021 20:28

Cannot even begin to imagine how hard it is for the secondary lot at the minute.

I however am done. I just about had it on Friday but by yesterday (and today) I'm the crappiest would be teacher ever. They're not listening despite how many times I stop them, recap expectations, follow the beh policy. The majority of them do not give a toss about the consequences. I'm done tonight. I also have uni asking about my deferred essay and planning/ resources to do for Thursday.

I can't go in tomorrow. I can't do it. I can't be what they need (whatever that is) and I've let them down and I've failed.

I think i need chocolate and an early night.

noblegiraffe · 27/04/2021 20:37

There was a thread on Site Stuff about that, Honey, you're not the only one.

Herc that is so infuriating. No clue about maths there. Big mark question Hmm

name you've just hit the wall. Things will feel clearer after a decent sleep, but it sounds like you need to ask for more support. Ask to see other teachers teach.
