You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

Just coming to post this. FML. Is it too late to switch subjects?

Piggywaspushed · 22/04/2021 19:09

It's unbelievable bureaucracy. It has moved rather far from 'trust the teachers'.

And surely they can't keep bringing out updates like this??

Piggywaspushed · 22/04/2021 19:12

and let me get this straight. If an exam board has a school where only one subject is done at that school from that board , does that definitely mean they will ask for a sample??

Asking for a friend.

motherrunner · 22/04/2021 19:15

I wish they had just bloody sat their exams. I’m fucked off with it all already and we’ve still got 5 weeks to go!

Piggywaspushed · 22/04/2021 19:17

Me too.

They just didn't plan and now there are suggestions next year might be different again.

I didn't mind exams being cancelled but lack of clarity and a system which is totally assessment sand exam focused has led to this carnage.

Piggywaspushed · 22/04/2021 19:20

Oh, and also lots of schools haven't had LFTs delivered (DSs included: my ow school's came late). According to a Tweeter, some schools have been told they will have to retstart mass testing if they don't get them within a certain time frame.

And heads are being told to chase up families who aren't recording results of tests.

TheHoneyBadger · 22/04/2021 19:22

I haven't recorded a test in at least a month I'd say and ds has never done one - either at school or at home.

How can they chase people? They're not obligatory even for staff let alone children.

HerdyGerdy · 22/04/2021 19:23

I’ve just been told off by a parent. For daring to sanction their child. Who refused to stop talking today - managing to halt the lesson for everyone. They apparently can’t figure out what they did wrong.

I just can’t anymore.

Urgh, I hate these parents.

Spoke to one parent, she told me. “If he does it again, he needs two detentions not one” love that parent. Guess what? He didn’t do it again.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 22/04/2021 19:40

The thing about the positives coming back negative on a PCR. Isn’t the false negative rate on the PCR much higher than the false positive on the LFT? Might need some maths people to explain what the likelihood is of you actually having covid is if you have a positive LFT and a negative PCR.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/04/2021 19:42

What's the daily contact testing thing? Sorry, think I've missed this completely.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/04/2021 19:45

All figs and numbers on LFDs here from Oliver Johnson on Twitter. I don't understand it, but maths bods might?

JanFebAnyMonth · 22/04/2021 19:48

rule, it’s the take a LFT for 7 days and you can still come to school. noble’s has a thread on it (of course!)

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/04/2021 19:58

Ok, thanks. That doesn't sound like a good plan. I mean, it might be OK while cases are really low, but it's not going to stay that way.

I hope everyone gets an uplift if starting salaries are £30k. HAHAHAA

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/04/2021 20:05

I spent a chunk of today hanging around in a corridor making sure an angry runner was safe. Luckily that corridor was right in the sunshine, so I just laid on the floor being nice and warm, while the child ran back and forth raging at nothing.

Best moment in school since about September.

TheHoneyBadger · 22/04/2021 20:08

They're basically saying experience counts for nothing if not. It always tends to feel as though that is what they think though. Never mind about retention, who cares if they only stay a few years, high staff turnover and staff lacking in confidence and ability to stand up for good practice and conditions are far easier to cow into obedience.

motherrunner · 22/04/2021 20:11

We haven’t got any LFTs left at our school either. Been told to go to a local hub to see if there are any there. Hopefully some next week.

Appuskidu · 22/04/2021 20:16

Well, quite!

And at the moment, heads go for NQTs because they are so cheap, rather than people on UPS at £40k, if they bump up NQT to £30k but don’t move anyone else, there’s much less of a difference and everyone will earn almost the same v quickly!

MrsHamlet · 22/04/2021 20:17

I sat on a bench in the sun at lunchtime and did some marking. Bob stopped off to say hello.
Twenty minutes later he was back - this time escorted. Somehow he'd split his pants. I offered him a spare dress and he said "only if I can have them shoes as well"
Bless Bob. I don't share shoes.

Mistressinthetulips · 22/04/2021 20:22

What is the starting salary, out of interest?

Mistressinthetulips · 22/04/2021 20:23

(I started on £11,000, but this was paid in groats)

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/04/2021 20:36

£25,714

I started on £21ish in 2008. That's a really shit rise in that time, isn't it.
