You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

I taught in a state boarding school and one of my year 10 students kept falling asleep in class because he was up all night doing goodness knows what. I mentioned this in his report which parents got just before summer.
He went home to Hong Kong whereupon he was grounded for the whole summer for his rudeness. Well done that patent!

I qualifies in 2000. I reckon it was the Gove era but could it have happened before that with the National Literacy hour etc? Parents stopped seeing teaching basic literacy and numeracy as their responsibility and then this had fed down to ‘why do I need to teach them potty training?’

motherrunner · 07/04/2021 10:48

I am living the #nomoremasks though on Twitter. So many young people telling ‘oldies’ to fuck off!

@Piggywaspushed

Morning and thanks staff. Just to be pedantic, is it not the 55th??

Gav seems to be echoing Tom Bennett's Twitter spats so he has been meeting him, I guess.

We have a sort of phone ban but lockdown taught me how good it was to be able to get students to research something during a lesson and we have no computers. So, I shall continue to let (older) kids use phones if it facilitates their learning. Rebel me.

Oh b*lls yes you are right!

Gav taking a right battering on Twitter. How has he still got a job?

StaffRepFeistyClub · 07/04/2021 10:57

Who is the Gavin you are talking about? Wasn’t that bloody incompetent halfwit arrested for pretending to be the Education Secretary and misleading teachers, parents and students? Or was that a dream?

I'm afraid that applies to all of them. I'm old enough to remember John Patten in the mid 90s suggesting that every school should have a flagpole and pledge allegiance, USA style, every day. The way the Tories are going with ostentatious displays of the Union Jack, they might just try to resurrect that idea. No money for ventilation / free school meals / laptops, but hey! Flags!

I think. Bojo kept him because his stupid behaviour made all the others look good.

I guess he will be kept until the summer exam results come out - Gav is a dead man walking

Good Morning all.

TheHoneyBadger · 07/04/2021 11:20

I dunno, still think Gav must have some pretty damning dossiers on powerful people. Can't figure why else he would have been hired let alone not sacked.

I've managed to mark another set of assessments. Three down, two to go. Will take this lot back into school in a bit and try to sit and mark another set. My inappropriate crush was in school yesterday and that perked me up a bit.

borntobequiet · 07/04/2021 11:26

How many of us always have to deal with cyberbullying/arguments that have taken place outside of school hours, usually in their homes?!

This was one factor that drove me into retirement. Bullying problem in Y7 sorted, but taken up by mums on Facebook and blown out of all proportion, to the distress of the children who had helped resolve it in a very mature fashion.

Saucery · 07/04/2021 11:50

Oh god, the overspill from online stuff starts as early as Yr3 for some! Add to that the after school falling out which we are somehow also supposed to be on top of and responsible for.......

I've had similar in y5. Lots of children worried about their parents getting in trouble etc. So many of them on tech all day unsupervised it's scary to hear them talk about hacking and scams.
noblegiraffe · 07/04/2021 11:58

My Y3 lent a friend her favourite pet in Roblox and the friend wouldn't give it back...disaster...I don't think that sort of falling out is restricted to online stuff though.

namechangedyetagain · 07/04/2021 12:17

Morning all. I've actually opened the laptop this morning. And I have a pile of articles next to me waiting to be read..... sadly that is as far as I have got. I have eaten 2 bits of toast and half a bag of jelly babies though. I detest writing essays with a passion. I seem to write a couple of notes and then wander off to pinterest to look at classroom set ups.....

TheHoneyBadger · 07/04/2021 12:22

Skim read cherry picking for quotes and highlighting them.

Appuskidu · 07/04/2021 12:26

schoolsweek.co.uk/williamson-plans-1-1m-expansion-of-cadet-units-in-schools/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

I must have missed this last week. Is that what he’s been busy deciding schools need?

TheHoneyBadger · 07/04/2021 12:26

If it's clear in your head that eg. I want to present argument a, argumenta b and propose c as my outcome/conclusion you then just go looking for the quotes. My experience of the essays required at post grad cert level (teaching and counselling) is that they're not that academically rigorous but you need to look like you've looked at a broad range of sources and engaged with popular debates and theories. Don't make it too hard on yourself and if you're reading an article and thinking this doesn't say much don't spend hours trying to draw deeper meaning out of it or thinking you just don't 'get it' - scrap it.

However you may be more diligent than me Wink

TheHoneyBadger · 07/04/2021 12:29

"Williamson, a former defence secretary, has been vociferous in his pursuit of a military ethos in schools, even commissioning a report in 2018 to look at how military values could benefit pupils."

Twat - trying to look like he has some transferable skills.

namechangedyetagain · 07/04/2021 12:32

Nah definitely not diligent! I'm doing the skim reading bit. Finding an argument to support formative assessment. One against. Maybe more. Some ideas about strategies then 1000 relating it to some of my lessons. That's my only loose plan Smile

TheHoneyBadger · 07/04/2021 12:41

Good luck.

TheHoneyBadger · 07/04/2021 12:51

Right - how do you subtly find out if a man is married/partnered?

TheHoneyBadger · 07/04/2021 12:53

I'd like to be someone who could just brazenly ask someone out for a drink but I'm not. But maybe I could psyche myself up to be if I was confident that they were definitely single. Would hate to ask someone out who wasn't single.

Sorry definitely not the thread for it but nowhere else to ask and my only female friend I have around here is partnered yet simultaneously totally disinterested in men and sex etc.
