You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

Oh no! Good luck all at Winklebot House!

Monkeytennis97 · 01/01/2021 19:05

@GloriaWinklebot hi so sorry to hear that. Hope your DD and you are all through it swiftly x

Saucery · 01/01/2021 19:05

I feel sick at the thought of that. I’ve been on children’s ward with DS so many times in the past. You’d see a couple of other respiratory cases in there, mixed in with other things. Horrifying to think of a whole ward full of children with it. Where are the fucking ADULTS ffs! As in, the ones in a 1st world country with a vaccine on the horizon who can stand the fuck up and sort this out with due diligence to the actual fucking SCIENCE.
I am so angry right now.

reefedsail · 01/01/2021 19:07

The unions have been proven to have absolutely no teeth in this. They can have all the emergency meetings they like- the stern sounding letter they write afterwards will be blankly ignored.

noblegiraffe · 01/01/2021 19:12

Gloria have you continued the ONS tests through the holidays? Trying to figure out if they have the ONS data for last week and just aren’t publishing it or if they stopped collection.

Hope your DD continues to be fine, and the rest of your family Flowers

Panickingpavlova · 01/01/2021 19:13

Saucery me too but my dd has not been classified as asthmatic.

It's been very odd, something literally in the air, two times when she was seriously struck down the ward was full of children with the same issue!

What was scary was the lack of resources because every child had it.
I could hear the nurses phoning around trying to source equipment. People don't get how dangerous things can get unless they have seen no resources, been waiting for an ambulance that takes hours to come... Etc etc.

noblegiraffe · 01/01/2021 19:13

Totally uncovid-related this tweet made me laugh. We’ve all been there.

Grin. Reminds me of being on PGCE and going into a school to try and teach fractions to Y8. I tried it with Lego, which I'm sure is still a good idea (I've seen it lauded on social media a few times), but my group just spent all their time building!

Butmiss · 01/01/2021 19:17

Checking in.
How embarrassing for Gav to have to make another u-turn.
At our school our catchment area is really large so we have children travelling to us from 2 other boroughs, so I'm glad they have all closed.
Schools in tier 3 and 4 areas need to close, before everywhere ends up as bad as here. Sad

NeurotreeWenceslas · 01/01/2021 19:24

I honestly can't see it happening unless over a certain rate and lots of the new variant. Our cases are still relatively low and lower new variant (at the mo, obviously data is delayed)

Won't be long though. I give us 2 weeks.

hedgehogger1 · 01/01/2021 19:25

Ha I had to teach classification for my interview for first teaching job. I used haribo :) left them in the science staff room at the end of the interview day. I was haribo girl when I started.

Yes and this government don't do preventative.
ChloeDecker · 01/01/2021 19:26

Yep. I remember trying to teach variables (programming) using Toblerone boxes to keep it ‘exciting’ and next lesson when reviewing, all I got when I asked what a variable was, was “Is that a Toblerone in a box, Miss”?

GleamingBaubles · 01/01/2021 19:26

@SmileEachDay

But what's with all the twitterers with smileys on their profile pic speaking utter tosh?
SaltyAF · 01/01/2021 19:27

My DD still has bouts of croup aged 10. Can't get her an appointment at the GP surgery (her peak flow is an average 190). They've just checked her an inhaler for asthma that they haven't diagnosed (this has been going on months). If she ended up alone on a ward because I couldn't stay home and protect her, I'd be devastated.

My ds is asthmatic. Twice been in on oxygen with pneumonia. I'm pretty worried at the thought of him getting it. Also got a couple of other medical things going on. If definitely get the -shrug- "he had underlying conditions" from the U4T crowd
JanuaryChill · 01/01/2021 19:31

The London schools U turn, BBC article:

Dr Mary Bousted of the National Education Union, said the government was right to reverse its "obviously nonsensical position".

"What is right for London is right for the rest of the country," she said, and she called on ministers to "do their duty" by closing all primary and secondary schools nationwide for at least two weeks.

Monkeytennis97 · 01/01/2021 19:33

They just CAN'T admit schools are not safe can they...

Hercwasonasnowball · 01/01/2021 19:36

noble I could tweet the equivalent about smarties. Damn you edutainment.

Do all the u turns create some sort of infinity loop?

ChloeDecker · 01/01/2021 19:37

Is the smiley face a bat signal to Covid deniers/Us4Them etc?

RigaBalsam · 01/01/2021 19:38

Apparently U turn isn't a good phrase to use any more. Honestly this place sometimes.Angry

NeurotreeWenceslas · 01/01/2021 19:41

It's taken haringey a month to go from under 200 to almost 1000.

(Not sure what tier they were in.)

So yeah this is going well.

Hercwasonasnowball · 01/01/2021 19:42

Riga You can't say u turn anymore? I missed that memo.

NeurotreeWenceslas · 01/01/2021 19:44

Who says ?!
