You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

Thanks for the recommendations, I've read a few listed (not war and peace Grin) but will have a look at the others and see what grabs me. I miss reading in term time!

And in Australia, they've been sending kids home with the slightest snuffle or hint of any illness whatsoever. They think we've lost the fucking plot here.

I feel nostalgic for those days already. Two coughs in an hour and out you go.

Glue-ing: Zshum, zshum, zshum, zshum on each side, line it up CAREFULLY, watching what you are doing and not chatting to the person next to you, lay it down carefully, CHECK IT, then smooth it in.

Achristmaspudsskidu · 29/12/2020 19:15

Australia really have had the right idea.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the government simply stop testing people and decide to hide death numbers in the hope they can convince everyone they have beaten covid. What with their wold-beating systems and all.

CallmeAngelGabriel · 29/12/2020 19:15

What was it Twatelar said recently? That we were best in the world at something or other?

MsAwesomeReindeer · 29/12/2020 19:20

I read in bed every night, even in term time. Of course, when I say read, I often mean look at one page until I drop the Kindle on my head. Blush

I quite enjoyed The Catch by TM Logan, and The Holiday by the same author this year. I've read some proper rubbish as well, so I won't recommend those.

DrMadelineXMASwell · 29/12/2020 19:21

I have at least one who picks up their book at random (not even checking if the margin is on the left) and opens at any page.

And another few that glue in less than straight, then pick up the book and trim the sheet where it pokes out of their book! I really hate that one.

And those that trim the bezeesus out of something already trimmed then never get around to finishing their task.

Quite the opposite - my current stash of blutac was ordered three years ago.

I always end up with gluesticks leftover at the end of the year. I use them to trade with other classes for anything we run low on 😂

MsAwesomeReindeer · 29/12/2020 19:26

I have a whole load of kids who only write on the right hand page, and WON'T write on the left page. They claim they will "stick sheets in on that side" but they don't. And they almost all lose sheets when I do the book shake.

hedgehogger1 · 29/12/2020 19:26

If you can get away with four dabs in the corner you clearly have a better quality of glue stick

DrMadelinemaxwell · 29/12/2020 19:27

I read in bed every night on my kindle too. Nothing serious or sensible though and love fantasy and the odd science fiction book too, as my username attends to. Well recommended btw, the Jodi Taylor books.

GloriaWinklebot · 29/12/2020 19:28

I am teaching a few lessons outside of my subject this year (which doesn't need anything stuck in books) and can now admit to you all that I am a novice at getting anyone to glue anything correctly😂...watching for tips with interest! Don't get me started on colouring stuff in...my Year 8 can make this last an entire lesson if I am nor careful!

Well, I don’t like to boast....... proper Pritt Stick

In many of my subjects, the kids only write on the left. The right is for my marking and their redrafting and responses to my marking.

I don't let them write on the right hand page unless specifically instructed. I have a systematic system which works - one of my year 10 rolls her eyes so far back in her head that they're going to vanish when I say "next clean left hand page"
MrsHamlet · 29/12/2020 19:30

I'm also an every night reader. I read whilst I brush my teeth too 🤣

hedgehogger1 · 29/12/2020 19:30

@Saucery -speechless-

Iamnotthe1 · 29/12/2020 19:31

How dare you?! Children with Pritt Stick! Which TA did you sack in order to pay for that?

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 29/12/2020 19:31

I’ve just ventured out onto some other threads (I know). Based on what I read and just out of interest, would you take furlough if it were offered? I really, really would and that saddens me as I would have raised eyebrows at such an option before Covid.

DecemberStar · 29/12/2020 19:33

Noo, the Library (ie Librarians') Pritt stick has to be hidden so we don't lend it by mistake and never get it back!!!

How ever many subjects do you teach @Iamnotthe1 ??

SantaAssociationRepresentitve · 29/12/2020 19:33

@Jinglingmod - I am in contact in a colleague who left to teach in Australia and I am jealous.

She said the slightest sniffle and hers are sent home and they are not allowed back until fully better. Any child who rocks up as 'on the mend'' is not allowed in. Their parents seem to understand that but ours can't.

Furlough? I’d be glad at this point if they made me redundant outright tbh. Force my hand so I wouldn’t feel guilty about leaving.

Year Six so all of them. In English Writing, Reading, Geography, History, Science, French, R.E and D.T., they only write on the left and then redraft and respond to my making on the right.
