Corner what subject?? I was supervised by a priest, fab guy.

cornercupboard · 08/01/2021 21:22

Theology.

He was the sweetest old chap.

cornercupboard · 08/01/2021 21:23

This reminds me. Are any of you secondary bods RS specialists? I am contemplating a career change.

EvilEdnasEnemiesOfEducation · 08/01/2021 21:25

Thanks for the form time ideas, I've used them all before. Works fine in person but I just can't get them to interact with me online. If it wasn't for my lessons being different I'd think my tech wasn't working.

Feel broken after a week of this. I'm normally planned a week ahead and I haven't even planned Mon yet. It's not even a full day. Everything is just taking so much longer. Can't see me having any time to relax over the weekend.

I just can't do this.

ChloeDecker · 08/01/2021 21:30

I used to have to teach General Studies. Urgh!

MrsHamlet · 08/01/2021 21:34

I'm not but our head of RE is my idol. He threatens students with all kinds of punishment and hang off his every word. One of my students last year studied his classroom language for her NEA and was brilliant.

MrsHerculePoirot · 08/01/2021 21:39

@EvilEdnasEnemiesOfEducation sorry you’re struggling. It’s hard work. Can you put them in breakout rooms to have a chat? I’m too tired to think right now but will think again tomorrow.

MrsHamlet · 08/01/2021 21:41

How old are they evil

WhenSheWasBad · 08/01/2021 21:42
@MrsHamlet snap 1994 here too!

Also NRA which lifted ink off all my certificates. It’s a running joke amongst friends my age when you get a shit certificate for something to post it on ‘fb’ as one for my national record of achievement 🤣🤣🤣

@WhenSheWasBad that lesson sounds fab. How did you get them to submits their work at need out of interest?
@MrsHerculePoirot

Wow thanks. If I’m honest the submitting was a mixed bag.

I set an assignment in Teams for that lesson. Told everyone to take a picture of their work and submit it to in that assignment.

Some submitted in assignments, some just sent it over to me as a message in teams. Some sent nothing. It’s a work in progress hopefully it will improve.

False alarm with the vaccination for teachers in Wales.

Apparently they are only providing it to staff who provide intimate care in schools, special schools and colleges.

Damn.

Loshad · 08/01/2021 22:09

I'm older than lots of you, did O levels at a girls school. The teaching was shit, lots of read these pages in the textbook girls then answer the questions, but I am still in touch with well over half the year group nearly 40 years later and we had good numbers doing all the sciences even then. Careers advice was non existent but happy times.
I was a late convert to teaching as had an academic career at a red brick uni for a very long time but became disillusioned. I was really shocked at behaviour when i first went into school on pre course taster days, soon got used to that.

Checking in from the County of Lurk to say hello and I'm bloody knackered. Although I went to school to supervise kids and they were lovely little y7s so a much nicer day than I had expected.

HarrietDVane · 08/01/2021 22:23

Found you!

We made it to Friday and I've just been catching up with the thread. I suspect I'm a similar vintage to many of you - I think we were the second or third year to sit GCSEs and both English Lit and Lang were 100% coursework. I can't remember what the careers quiz thing said for me, certainly not either of the two professions I've ultimately followed! My school didn't exactly foster aspirational careers for girls, unfortunately.

Piggywaspushed · 08/01/2021 22:23

Thanks january ....I think...

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 08/01/2021 22:25

Second year of GCSEs here

JanuaryChill · 08/01/2021 22:34

Sorry if that sounded uncomplimentary piggy! It's your "don't take any nonsense" attitude that made me think it. Plus yr username I suppose. Not for wimps!

I have a friend whose DP is a prison officer. Fascinating tales.

RandomGrammarPun · 08/01/2021 22:41

I think I got handed a sheet on "Careers in Museums" after a ten minute chat with our pervy"careers adviser" in second year, too.

I think he's already given out all the other sheets to people earlier in the alphabet Grin

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 08/01/2021 22:57

I got "archivist" and "pharmacist".

Better than the government one that said cake maker ffs.

I remember general studies. I got the best score the school ever had (think I was the only one who read the papers). Wrote an essay that referred to a politician having an affair that came out early 2000s but I've forgotten who. Was a right scandal at the time.

noblegiraffe · 08/01/2021 23:00

For general studies I had to write an essay about a piece of art. I knew fuck all about art so wrote an essay about A Clockwork Orange. Loved that book.

borntobequiet · 08/01/2021 23:02

I always feel a little shy posting on these threads because I’m (strictly speaking) retired - but I teach 0.8 FTE in FE, mostly Maths.
I did my O levels in 1969, so I’m probably older than most of you. I saw one of my newly appointed (much) younger colleagues just before Christmas wandering around with his Record of Achievement. I was amazed that he still had it.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 08/01/2021 23:02

Any of you have to study Key Skills during FE?
Government funded scheme in English, maths and ICT. Was part coursework and part exam and equivalent to gcse in each subject.

JanuaryChill · 08/01/2021 23:18

Herc I actually wanted to be an archivist when I started my degree!!

JanuaryChill · 08/01/2021 23:20

@borntobequiet nice to hear from lurkers! I always wonder what the ration of "frequent posters" to lurkers is on any MN thread and specifically on this one.

I 💗 you: I'm not the oldest here! (WHY DO WE OBSESS ABOUT AGE???)

Ulelia · 08/01/2021 23:41

So much plastic in those NRA's, and so solid it was a bit of a pain to lug them to interviews, especially when no one very wanted to see it. 100m swimming badge anyone?

I used to get teacher or national trust/forestry worker. The second is getting more tempting by the year...
