You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are not staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

Will you accept that parents won’t be able to cycle into work until schools are up and running?
Shapps says more people than ever are working from home and this is likely to continue as long as social distancing remains at the heart of the situation. The PM will say more on this tomorrow, he adds.

RigaBalsam · 09/05/2020 17:10

Tammy from Bristol asks how the government plans to implement social distancing measures in education settings.
Shapps says we must wait to hear from the prime minister tomorrow at 7pm but discussions are ongoing on this matter.
Van-Tam says that whatever the PM announces tomorrow, it will be “extremely cautious, careful and painstaking” and will take into account these factors.

It’s caution all the way, really.

RigaBalsam · 09/05/2020 17:17

Ugh! I an dreading it.

Appuskidu · 09/05/2020 17:19

I am very concerned by what he’s going to say.

It only looks like they’ve set aside 10 minutes for tomorrow’s announcement. That isn’t long?!

pinkrocker · 09/05/2020 17:21

I'm an NQT, I graduated from a 3yr BA aged 43! We have another NQT at school who's 22, bless her she is lovely. But does the MN consensus of opinion suggest we are both cannon fodder?

Cyberworrier · 09/05/2020 17:23

It would be potentially suicidal for them as a government if they open the English schools up and there are staff/pupil/family deaths, when Scotland and Wales and NI aren’t going back. Surely they realise that, if only to look after their own political futures. However, can’t put anything past them, including their wish for the economy to get back up and running to be greater than anything...

Asuitablecat · 09/05/2020 17:27

I know I sound like a stuck record, but they also have to stop seeing an.invisible border between Eng and Wales. Opening Eng schools but not Welsh ones causes problems for those of us who.work.x border.

And yy, honeybadger my iPad hates me typing on mumsnet.

RigaBalsam · 09/05/2020 17:30

Poster in another thread wants to write to the Times to show them a thread where most would send their kids back.

Sad Act.

Piggywaspushed · 09/05/2020 17:31

To be honest, even if they are proved right and there are not many/any cases in schools the quality and experience of education children receive will be so poor that it won't have been worth it. The parents so concerned about the MH of their DCs stuck at home will soon see how much a socially distanced education affects their children's satisfaction levels and wellbeing. Obviously, some children's mental health is being affected, for which blame the coronavirus, not schools. Some children's MH is affected when they are at school.

Piggywaspushed · 09/05/2020 17:32

I know. I am ashamed. I bit on that. The OP is a renowned TB.

Appuskidu · 09/05/2020 17:32

That poster reminds me of Daffodil.

RigaBalsam · 09/05/2020 17:33

Some children's MH is affected when they are at school.

It very much is but that doesn't suit their agenda.

Asuitablecat · 09/05/2020 17:38

But children are desperate to get back to school. They'll all behave impeccably, as they've missed so much school and are terrified of not having a future.

Or perhaps...
Lots of moaning about how unfair it is
Lots if excuses as to why they can't remember anything
Lots of attempts to derail lessons with 'what if...?' questions.
Lots of panic about not knowing enough for the exam- which then paralyses them into doing nothing.

TheHoneyBadger · 09/05/2020 17:44

No pink. You have life experience and education. Why would you think anyone would think that?

TheHoneyBadger · 09/05/2020 17:46

Realistically it would be sitting at the front of a shit show for me. No way to do practicals or meaningful learning, nowhere to remove kids to no matter how badly they behaved and expected to just keep them in the room and suck it up.

TheHoneyBadger · 09/05/2020 17:47

So not so different from usual tbf Grin

Appuskidu · 09/05/2020 17:48

Lots of moaning about how unfair it is

Trying to get only certain year groups in first if that’s how they do it (y6/10/12) will be a massive ‘this is so unfair, Miss’ problem, I think. They won’t want to come back if other years don’t have to and I think the behaviour problems are going to be rife. With lots of ‘oi, you can’t come near me, get away from me-don’t touch me-I don’t wanna catch your Corona’!

Piggywaspushed · 09/05/2020 17:49

Biscuit and Daffodil often appear in tandem. Daffodilbeing the more pleasant, ergo the smiling assassin.

TheHoneyBadger · 09/05/2020 17:49

If I was allowed gin and Valium I reckon I could take one for the team and run the removals room

Piggywaspushed · 09/05/2020 17:50

Oh, it'll be such a nightmare in my school of whole year groups have to be split up. Whichever way you slice the cake, a year group of 400+ is hard to divide up without causing huge disruption and pointlessly slow education.

And our year 12 class sizes are often very large.

phlebasconsidered · 09/05/2020 17:56

Gravity- please don't assume thick people can be primary teachers. And he will need very good maths - take a look at last years SATS papers. A student needs at least 30 on the arithmetic paper plus a good score on both reasoning papers to pass. When we did a primary/ secondary trust meeting we all did the papers and it shocked the secondary teachers.

It really annoys me when people see primary teaching as easier. It really is not. Having done ten years in each I can safely say the skill levels in both are equal.

I've just put off a friends child from teaching by showing her the sats papers. If she can't do them in year 11, she's got no hope!

Anyway - sorry for derailing!

pinkrocker · 09/05/2020 18:09

Honey just what I've seen on various MN threads. "Let the NQTs take up the slack and let the older /more vulnerable teachers stay at home" type comments, seen quite a few of those.
It's odd, I don't think of myself as newly qualified, nor do my students nor other teachers. I've taken so long to get through this "year" as I've only ever been p/t, but been a teacher for ages! Grin

Mistressiggi · 09/05/2020 18:26

PR you're hardly a typical NQT to be fair - what do you think about having older staff return when they might be at much greater risk than those in their twenties? When people say NQT don't you think it's a short hand for "young" in most cases?

TheHoneyBadger · 09/05/2020 18:28

Oh I was worried you thought the talk of huns was somehow directed at all nqts or something. Phew!

Perhaps all the childless teachers could move into school and sleep on camp beds in the hall and teach all of the kids in classes of 10 in 6 hr shifts with a six hour sleep break? Grin surprised that hasn’t been suggested
