Earl Spencer's book on Diana is stolen

Warning - DM link ahead...
Copies of Earl Spencer's sensational book about Princess Diana have been stolen from a lorry – just before its exclusive serialisation in the Daily Mail.
The memoir – Swan Song: Diana, My Sister – includes revelations about Diana's deeply unhappy marriage with the then Prince of Wales.
It also describes the crisis that engulfed the Royal Family after her death in a car crash almost 30 years ago.
Last night a publishing insider said: 'Earl Spencer has kept his silence for nearly 30 years and what he has to say about the King's reaction when Diana died is utterly devastating.'
But, in an astonishing development, the Mail can reveal that a truck packed with thousands of copies of the book was broken into after it was parked overnight in a lay-by in the Netherlands earlier this week.
Just four copies, which had been wrapped in black plastic to hide their contents, were stolen in what publishing sources believe could have been an audacious plot to steal the highly anticipated book of the year before it hits the shelves.

@bluegreygreen
At least Charles can say in his defence that Camilla was his only partner. Diana seems to have left a trail of destruction in other people’s marriages.

And then there were the liaisons with the surgeon and the al-Fayed son. And all the piss-poor judgements around that, right up to not wearing her seatbelt.

And now stupid Spencer has opened the door for today’s social media generation to publish and post their very public opinions about some fairly salacious matters that were best left to lie.

I actually thought this statement was repulsive. Sneering, sanctimonious faux-compassion. Basically claiming that ES was mad or lying. If they don't comment on books 'as a matter of principle' why do so now?

I can't say categorically whether or not ES's account was true. What I can say that I can remember every detail of certain instances/ things being said and done during distressing times, as clearly as if they happened yesterday. Such things are never forgotten. If Charles thinks this account is false I would have had more respect if his spokesperson had just said that.

I agree and this seems to "The Firms" response now - recollections may vary or grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise etc etc.

I might have bought this once but not on this...

Yes, it's strange. Here we are, almost 30 years on, and he has a book to sell 🤨

Well both William and Harry have gone to the courts to try and get justice. he can provide his own counsel as The King’s Counsel and sue him for defamation !

Absolutely - I have no skin in the game at all but I was late 20s when Diana died and I have no problem recollecting just how badly Charles and his horrible mother dealt with the whole thing. I have no time for Spencer and think he’s a prick but KC shouldn’t be throwing stones from his transparent glass house 🙄

I’m not doubting he remembers the conversations. It’s that he claims to remember the exact wording of it that I doubt. Humans are unreliable.

Its also very hard to believe that he wouldn’t have mentioned it for all this time.

Agree.

It's well known that people remember the emotions clearly but remember conversations and even factual events poorly in a traumatic situation.

I suspect KC3 and William have discussed whether to comment and what to say, and this statement has been long planned.
It is written such that there will be no comment on any other specific revelation in the book.

I hope they are not distressed by the rest of the book, or by the inevitable hype in the reporting.

No, he's not "the King's Counsel".
That is a qualified barrister.

“Never complain, never explain” has long been the royalist go-to, but then, unlike her son, she was relatively without sin.

Forgive me, but your strong reaction would suggest otherwise.

It was a joke - silence in Court !

Futurehappiness · Yesterday 20:13

Indeed. I am definitely at the point now where I am just sick of the entire family. How long does this embarrassing circus have to go on for? How can they claim to represent and unite the nation when they can't even unite themselves?

You may not like Spencer and may criticise Diana. But one has been dead for 30 years and the other is not living off the public purse. It is Charles and the RF, not them, who need to be commanding respect.

Of course this is all welcome distraction from the fact that Andrew is still being protected and will never answer to the creditable allegations made against him. Don't forget that his accuser was also called a liar by the spokesperson of our then Head of State; so the RF have plenty of form for this.

It's interesting about him suggesting Charles was why the princes walked behind their mother's coffin because I'd heard Alastair Campbell saying it came from Charles camp- though he did not say Charles himself just his camp- and then they found fingers pointed at them for it when they were unsure it was a good idea.

MyAgileUser · Yesterday 20:22

I think this book will be another case if recollections may vary….

Charles Spencer is a cretin and broke. He has treated the women in his life horribly, including his sister. He didn’t even want to give her a place to stay on his estate!

This will fuel Harry’s paranoia like petrol on a fire

Tbf, I believe Spencer did offer Diana a house elsewhere, just not the one she wanted.

feellikeanalien · Yesterday 20:26

Whatever his reasons for doing this he obviously doesn't care how it will affect his nephews, his sister's sons.

This will open a whole can of worms. He quite clearly hasn't given any thought to the distress this will cause.

😂😂 I assure you I’m not a member of the royal family just a citizen who’s fucking sick of the deferential way this awful family are treated. I really hoped that the dreadful behaviour of the royals in 1997 would spell their terminal decline but man people have short memories 😬🤬

I agree.

Does he need the money?

Bogstandardname · Yesterday 20:35

Has he written a book, I had no idea but I do now. Hmm. I would like to be his sort of broke but then it is all relative. I do have some insight on an ex professional basis (retired) as to what a complete arsehole he is to his ex wives. We used to run bets on how long the latest marriage would last. I doubt it is worth the current one unpacking all her bags He is easily bored.

Ok, that's fine, it's all good 👍🏼

I don’t believe this at all , and it’s very easy to make accusations and embroider things about someone who is dead! , before people get to excited for a reason to villify Charles with no evidence…remember this is one word against another… there can be no proof of a 30 year old telephone conversation that may or may not have happened at all.

No - he's often blamed as is Blair's camp.

Apparently verions I heard were Prince Philip was if your'e doing it then I'll go with you - didn't suggest it or say they should just offered his support if they decided to.

It's just now there two different groups saying it was Charle's where idea was coming from.

Interesting - I was also in my 20s at the time, and my recollection is the Queen trying to keep the boys at Balmoral to protect them, and the crazy outcry about that, and Tony Blair giving speeches and forcing the family to be more public.

It was also the government that pushed for the boys to walk behind the coffin first.
Prince Philip objected initially, but once the decision was made, offered to walk with them to support them, as he had walked as a teenager behind his sister's coffin.
He was also concerned, once it had been raised with them, that if they didn't do it they might later regret it.

Right. I know this when he was a teenager, Philip walked behind his beloved sister's coffin, in Germany.
Maybe he thought it was the right thing to do..

Broke - what's your evidence for that ? Google seems to think around £100 million a lot might be in illiquid assets but I’m sure he's not potless but 3 divorces may have taken their toll and he doesn’t have the rent from an empty prison on Dartmoor being funded by the taxpayer. I'll give you that .

If he was so concerned about Diana why did he refuse her request for a home on the Althrop Estate ?

I withdraw my comment as I've seen further updates about accommodation that I'd been unaware of.
