So if they ask to visit a hospital with a press pack for photo ops what's the score.

The hospital can de ide for themselves if they want them there and say ‘no’ without it causing issues with the royal family. I suspect the hospital would also need to be a lot more careful about justifying the extra spend necessary and the distraction from patient care and the risk that brings. Plus make sure they obtain consent of patients present that day.

Unless they could see some clear benefit in terms of publicity they should turn them down.

The statement was probably as a result of organisations contacting BP for clarification of H and M's position and as such was addressed to those who may want to engage with them. It didn't need to be passed by H at all, it's akin to a person applying for a job and expecting to have a say about what's in their reference or testemonial.

It was reported that HAM contacted some hospitals and charities informing them 🙄 that they were visiting and expecting the same protocols in place as King, William , C, etc

No that’s a proper answer!

I believe the origin of the dispute lies with Harry having consistently said that he always wanted to serve in some capacity and the late Queen or whoever was in charge at that point saying no you have to work for the RF and not earn any extra on the side.

What this meant in reality for Harry was despite being closer to the throne than his uncle and aunts , his accommodation and perks would have been substantially less.

And he would have been the only one not raking in extra in some form or another.

Charles and William have the profits from the Duchies and have no money worries whatsoever.

AMW as we now know was doing all sorts of nefarious deals to benefit his own pocket and was allowed to do this for a decade while representing the UK in an official capacity. This was known about and covered up. He also let out cottages in his grounds.

Sophie and Edward live in a £30 million pound mansion and they let parts of that out too.

To me they are all over privileged and entitled but what Harry has done has exposed the hypocrisy of all of them telling him he has to live within the rules, because (had he stayed a working member) it wouldn’t have cost any of them except him to do so!

Edited

Delurking to respond to this as I follow these threads but generally don’t comment. I don’t agree with the hypocrisy comment. There are two very separate factions.

The working royal family W&C, Anne, Edward, Sophie et al and the royal family, Zara, Beatrice etc.

The working royals represent the head of state and carry out duties on their behalf. They don’t get paid for this in terms of a salary but they do get perks which might be clothes allowance, a grace and favour home (and the ability to rent parts out if they wish), income from the Duchies etc etc. This if you like is their remuneration for being a working royal. There is however a fine line here and there is the possibility of exploitation as the AMW debacle evidenced

The members of the royal family have jobs which are salaried and may be more likely to have opportunities for endorsements but they do not represent the head of state. They may be expressly invited to royal events such as garden parties or Ascot but this is due to a level of human interest in them as members of the royal family but they never represent the HoS at events such as State Banquets or State Funerals. They get less obvious perks than the WRF members but they do get some.

Harry and Meghan could have had either of the above options. The issue was that they wanted to combine the two and that can’t work as it would be muddled as to when they were representing the HoS and when they weren’t. They chose the second option and if they hadn’t gone wild slagging off the institution and all members within it they would now be benefiting from the royally affiliated perks and invitations that their cousins get now as well as being able to work for a salary

It’s not hypocrisy, it’s a simple distinction between two areas that get easily conflated.

Absolutely agree! In which case, why did the RF not allow the same for Harry? Could it be he was too close to the throne and it would show up what all the rest of them were doing?

They probably would have if they hadn't fucked off to California and slagged off their entire family in books, interviews and documentaries.

If they'd bought a little country estate in the UK, they could have rented out their own stables, arranged for some lucrative polo sponsorship, maybe become ambassadors for an upmarket brand or two. They probably would have been invited along to the odd Buckingham Palace garden party, Christmas at Sandringham, a nice day out at Royal Ascot.

Instead, they seemed to think they could become Hollywood A-listers overnight just by virtue of H being born into the royal family.

They've come back but don't seem to understand that their family can't/won't forgive or forget the awful things they've said.

Please stick to Harry and Meghan PR related comments, answering a question about Zara is perfectly reasonable, bringing up every other royal is unrelated to the topic and not answering the question.

Thank you.

The arrangement also reflects the behaviour of the non-working royals. Zara, for example, doesn't get invited just for who she is, but also because she is liked and knows how to behave at these events.

The point of the statement was to make it clear the didn’t need to if HAM contacted them. Requesting a visit by the WRF in order to celebrate something or other is an entirely separate matter.

The Sussex team used “Private Citizens” first.

26 August 2026: The Sussex spokesperson
“The Sussexes are returning to the UK in a private citizens capacity, they won’t be carrying out any royal duties”
7th September 2026: The Lord Chamberlain on behalf of the King,
“The Sussexes have returned to the UK as private citizens & won’t be returning to Royal duties, in accordance with their wishes”

Congratulations - what a spot!!! How was this missed in all the noise around the letter. Brilliant!!

Hospitals do occasionally have Celebrities turn up eg at Christmas to hand out presents to children - the idea being this brings a benefit to the children. I can’t see any justification for photographers in such situations though.

When has Zara ever officially represented the RF though? She doesn't do official engagements, she doesn't have honorary military posts, she doesn't go on royal tours. She doesn't do/have any of the things Harry wants.

Zara Tindall is a patron of quite a few charities , many of which do indeed focus on equine welfare.

ROR supports the welfare and retraining of retired racehorses.
World Horse Welfare: Focuses on improving the lives of horses through rescue and education.
Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund: Helps individuals injured in horse-related accidents.
Catwalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust and UK Spinal Injuries Association: Funds research and support for spinal cord injuries.
Riding for the Disabled Association: Provides therapeutic riding for disabled individuals.

But also:

Lucy Air Ambulance for Children: The UK's first dedicated air transfer service designed to fly critically ill infants and children to urgent hospital care.
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children: She continues a long-standing family history of supporting this prominent children's medical facility.
Cancer Research UK: Supports cancer research and awareness initiatives.

While all of that work is admirable, I think it is unlikely that an ordinary professional event rider would have the means or the time to support so many charities, or indeed would be asked to do so , so it’s clear that some of her charity work has come about because she is royal even if she is not an official working royal. But of course the main distinction is that as a private individual she doesn’t receive tax payer public money.

So why is it so bad that as a private individual Harry also wants to do charity work and earn money on the side too?

This rivalry between the brothers could potentially rumble on for years!

There is no 'rivalry between the brothers'. One is Prince of Wales, with a stable family life and an established role. The other points at his crotch in his wife's twerking videos.

As best as we know, they haven't really spoken in years. It's a shame but it happens. But that's not a 'rivalry' because the two brothers are on entirely different levels.

Whoever you think is to blame, it’s not a good look from the Head of State

It's a very good look. As head of the monarchy Charles needs to ensure there is no ambiguity about who is serving that institution and who is not. Clearly there was some ambiguity and Charles, as King, has now cleared that up for all.

Harry is free to do all the 'charity work' he likes, just like any other citizen. But it's now been made very clear that he is doing so in a private capacity, not as a representative of the monarchy.

Clarity is always a good thing, don't you think?

Brava 👏👏👏
I find posters that think it's just a squabble and should be settled have never experienced a truly disruptive member of the family. I have and it is hell, no matter how you rise above the drama it just increases. The famous mn NC is the only way to deal with it and save your sanity.

And if the Invictus rumours are correct, he expects the charities and organisations to pay very hefty expenses, which the WRF don't- their costs are covered by the sovereign grant.

So what you are saying is that it is not really about the rules then? But more about the character of the person who flouts them?

The rules should work both ways imho.

If you are an official working royal then you are subsidised by the taxpayer and shouldn’t be able to privately rent stables or part of the mansion for which you are already paying a peppercorn rent.

And the problem with all of these so called rules is the lack of transparency over finances; the public don’t really know half of what is happening as demonstrated by the AMW scandal.

We are supposed to trust what the RF tells us. At least Harry is honest about wanting more money 😀 instead of this terrible charade of cereal out of Tupperware boxes while ignoring the priceless Meissen
china on the sideboard.

And the essential problem with our unwritten constitution and rules that are not rigid is that it depends heavily on the character, honour, and integrity of the people in power.

And I guess how you view all of this depends on how you consider that system is working for us British citizens right now?

It wasn’t necessary to make it public. They have just stirred up more trouble for themselves focusing on the wrong thing.

If they really wanted to cut down on admin I am sure that BP have a long list of charities and military establishments available to them to whom they could have offered guidance.

Publishing this openly smacks of snarkiness. Not a good impression for the H of S imho.

It wasn’t necessary to make it public. They have just stirred up more trouble for themselves focusing on the wrong thing.

What 'trouble'? Genuine question.

It seems clear that the Sussexes were touting their 'services' to various organisations, who reached out to BP for clarification. So this letter makes it clear, once and for all, that they are private citizens and nothing they do carries any royal association. So now everyone is clear.

As head of the monarchy, that is surely Charles' responsibility. There are many who would argue he should have done so much sooner. After all, the Sussexes have been provoking Harry's family for getting on 7 years now, getting only a dignified silence in return. Calling it 'snarky' seems childish to me.

And she has just won the British Open Championship in eventing, 20 years after her last championship!

Getting back to the topic of the thread, it occurred to me last night that a while ago the Sussex supporters on the threads were very critical of Catherine for having been in the company of Richard Branson, after his name was associated with Epstein.

Have we seen any criticism of Harry associating with Branson in the Ukraine charity bash?

Who said he can't? Isn't that exactly what he's been doing, or trying to do, for the past 7 years?

He just can't do so as a representative of the Monarchy, as Charles' letter made clear. Nor should he use his royal titles in his private endeavours. Otherwise he's free to do pretty much whatever he wants. As he has been doing.

And yet Zara Tindall does attend and help out on royal occasions from time to time, such as BP garden parties, Ascot, and she attended a state dinner in Australia I believe, which demonstrates that the interpretation of these rules is very flexible indeed when the RF want them to be.

At the same time she makes pots of money from private sponsorship which is why she and her dh are in Australia every new year representing the Magic Millions organisation.

Let’s be clear, the RF are all benefiting financially in some form or another whilst carrying out royal duties.

Whether that’s from tax payer money covering their luxury accommodation and clothing in the form of the sovereign grant , or from side hustles such as AMW used to carry out, or from peppercorn rents and letting out stables like Sophie and Edward, or from income from the Duchies that don’t pay corporation tax despite being a large proportion of their money coming from natural assets (wind power) often derived from state organisations such as the NHS or the army.

This HIHO nonsense is a complete fiction!

My point is that they are singling out Harry when they are all at it in some form or another.

Edited

They are singling out Harry because he is behaving differently from Zara and any other royals in the line of succession who are also commercially successful.

Of course proximity to the ‘glamour’ of royalty helps you network and therefore make money.

But none of the others have been wading into international politics in sensitive areas, demanding tax payer security and whining about not being able to wear their military uniform any more.

They haven’t been setting up faux ‘royal’ style tours to risky and politically complicated placed (Uganda, Nigeria, Columbia)

They haven’t been wading into international politics and making controversial statements that risk being seen as representative of the opinion of the Crown or the UK government (Ukraine, Gaza, Canadian First Nations)

If Harry wanted to make a load of money selling a particular skill or specialized interest like Zara no one would care.

If he hadn’t spent the last six years very publicly berating his family he’d be more than welcome to socialize with them at Ascot etc.

Nick Skelton seems to support an equal number to Zara.
Would you like me to list them all?
Harry doesn’t just want to support charities though. He wants to behave like a ‘world statesman’ -with all of the security that a high level ambassador would get. When was the last time Zara did a tour to Ukraine, or Gaza?
Harry is a loose cannon - or a loose horse and they are dangerous.

WE might know that he represents no one but himself but there are a lot of idiots out there who don’t realise this, ergo it had to be spelt out very very clearly.
Harry is a stupid man with a macavellian wife who pretends he’s ‘so clever’ when she knows as well as we do that Harry isn’t as intelligent as your average Labrador.
Does Zara have her ‘team’ announce she will be visiting charities??
No, she just does her thing without fanfare and expectation.

Maybe you could send Harry some suggestions of how he could ‘make money on the side’ as he seems to be fresh out of options.
Maybe selling Meghans mostly ghastly wardrobe on Vinted & eBay would be a possibility.

@Chrysanthemumsinpots I came on to say the same. Zara achieved Olympian standard in equestrian eventing as did her mother, Princess Anne, and her father, Captain Mark Phillips. It's hardly surprising she's the patron of so many equestrian charities.
