As someone who married into a Dutch (non-royal) family I think this is Nederlands humour.

After all, their daughters have also been hounded by the Dutch press and they’ve had their own issues with privacy.

I agree, I’m Dutch and what he said in Dutch is basically typical humour.

Dutch humour is very different to British humour and is absolutely not politically correct. In fact it’s often quite offensive in the UK context.

W-A’s oldest daughter has had to leave uni and essentially go into hiding due to an apparently very credible threat to her life, so it’s not like he doesn’t have experience of the horrible parts of being royal. I wouldn’t take it as him having a pop, just a cultural difference with a reference to current events.

Thinking about this some more, I would say that his comment (“Echt waar? Ik heb in ieder geval niets gephotoshopt”) would be more like, “Oh did you? All I can say is I haven’t photoshopped anything!” (Or “I didn’t photoshop anything.”) I don’t think the implications of “at least” are there in what he said in Dutch.

The Dutch and the British royal families are supposedly personal friends “off duty” so I don’t imagine there was any malicious intent - it’s the the joke du jour now…

It was a little offensive and I can’t imagine Charles or William making a joke in the opposite direction at a public engagement at the expense of the Dutch royal family but actually I think ( if I was advising the royals here) this is the direction I would suggest.
make a light hearted joke of it if opportunity arises rather than the so sorry , sack cloth and ashes sad face approach.

imagine back in the camillagate days the King Willem had made a tampon related joke to the school kids. “At least I’m not Camilla’s tampon!“
