King Willem-Alexander when asked about a picture with his family says ‘at least I didn’t Photoshop it’. It is bad when other Royal family members are having a pop.

Sadly parts of my own family have no voice now as they were all eliminated during WW2. We all have our own shitstorm in private life.

I think it’s obvious why the king made that joke: the RF (thanks specifically to the PR geniuses at KP) have become global laughing stocks over this Katephotogate.

It will go down in history as one of the worse PR disasters of the modern times, in the age of TikTok, X and online influencers.

And it 100% is down to KP and their antiquated and frankly arrogant comms strategy, which everyone with a voice, including their usual staunch supporters (ie even Pasty Piers, he’s usually FoS but even I’ve been surprised by what he’s been saying lately), is condemning as an abject failure.

Until KP wise up and adapt to the realities of keeping the public on side in 2024, they will continue to drag down the RF and make it the butt of jokes all over the world.

Things are not great for the RF when even other royals are making fun of them…

I had the opposite reaction. The joke shows how completely out of proportion the whole episode has been blown by an online world and media who will perpetuate any "scandal" or mistake however small for clicks.

No one is a global laughing stock, except possibly the tabloids.

That makes more sense to me. I don’t think it speaks very well of him if his intent was to mock. That would be something Trump would do, but hopefully it is rare.

All the European royals know each other so I would be very surprised if he meant to mock anything except the media obsession with the story.

I said earlier in the thread that it was a mistranslation. If you watch the video, a little girl says proudly that she has seen him in a photo, with his whole family. Just in that cute way kids do. And he responds to that with a little joke but there’s really no sense of “ at least “ in what he says, which sounds a bit snide in English.

Computer translation is often excellent but it still can’t capture this sort of nuance.

Grapje van koning Willem-Alexander in Zutphen gaat viraal

Tijdens zijn bezoek aan Zutphen heeft koning Willem-Alexander de Britse prinses Kate met een knipoog op de hak genomen.

That's top banter, that is, well played KW-A 👏

That makes sense, I can't see him being snide about it.

You really didn’t understand his joke, did you. Because the meaning was the opposite of what you are saying.

I’m not in the UK, and I can assure you they are certainly not a laughing stock. Most European royals are fairly good friends anyway, and this was his way of saying it’s not a big deal really. Which it isn’t. It’s media going for clicks.
