...and could really do with being hidden until HQ can deal.

havelgotaclue was the poster. It does sound like she has her own issues, and poor socks bore the brunt of it.

MudCity · 21/02/2016 08:45

Grim thread. No question there.

Maybe someone can enlighten me though why someone would title a thread 'Anybody feel like a fight?' I didn't understand what they were wanting.

gooseberryroolz · 21/02/2016 08:45

I got the impression that they were also a vulnerable poster

me too.

That is a puzzler, isn't it Mud?

I was assuming a few drinks on both sides, at least at first.

gooseberryroolz · 21/02/2016 08:49

(The OP did say something about releasing tension or something, but like PP said Socks was upset before the thread even started)

When I had bad depression after I was raped, I would often feel like I wanted a fight (I never did!) but I would deliberatly walk the streets at night hoping aomeone would attack me - i was very self destructive, physically and mentally. This felt very much like that with oddsocks thread title. Sometimes you hurt so much, you want to validate that.

(Obviously can't talk for the op, but just to give my perspective)

gooseberryroolz · 21/02/2016 08:51

She is in a bad place ATM.

ArkATerre · 21/02/2016 08:51

Thread was started for a fight. Numerous reasons for that to be the case but if you start a thread like that you can hardly complain if people, errrr, turn up for a fight.

gooseberryroolz · 21/02/2016 08:53

It doesn't matter really. Nobody, regardless of occupation, addictions, past interactions, any other issues deserves to be on the receiving end of invective like that. It was like paint stripper.

twirlypoo · 21/02/2016 08:54

Did you read the thread ark? Not having a go, just genuinely wondering.

flanjabelle · 21/02/2016 08:55

Often posters ask for a light hearted fight. It's funny and stress relieving. It's known that insults such as 'well you smell like sausages' are acceptable. The sort of vitriol that was seen on that thread is not.

AllThatGlistensIs · 21/02/2016 08:55

Nah, the thread title didn't help, but surely anyone can see that the posts she made showed that she was struggling, and certainly didn't warrant what happened.

In any case, it was initially lighthearted. Posters saw past the title and we're trying to lift the OP until that particular poster came and turned it into the car crash it became.

gooseberryroolz · 21/02/2016 08:55

Did you see it Ark?

That's like saying someone asked for half a shandy so shouldn't complain if they get given morphine.

OP posts:
ArkATerre · 21/02/2016 08:56

Yes, I saw the OP and the attacks from IHave, which were very vicious and gloves off, but if you start a thread asking for a fight you really can't complain when someone gives you one.

Odd has clearly been very well all week. The whole premise of the thread was a terrible idea and a manifestation of her illness. And Ihaves* bloody awful responses were probably a manifestation of hers, though far less easy to have any sympathy for.

It was basically the equivalent of a vulnerable sick person standing on a high ledge and saying 'I'll jump' and another mentally unwell bystander saying 'on you go then.'

ArkATerre · 21/02/2016 08:57

It's the Internet. There are going to be people who don't play by the rules.

ArgyMargy · 21/02/2016 08:57

Why would a vulnerable person join a thread that's specifically offering a fight?

Jasonandyawegunorts · 21/02/2016 08:57

f you start a thread asking for a fight you really can't complain when someone gives you one

It wasn't a fight, it was bullying.

Fighting implies a level of fairness.

littledid · 21/02/2016 08:57

I opened the thread expecting it to be lighthearted and I'm surprised others are saying that the OP should have anticipated trouble. It was clear from the first, and definitely the second posts, that the OP was looking for conversation and company. Perhaps she could have anticipated 'debate' but certainly not the kind of vitriol to which she was subjected. Who would? I have never seen anything like it in my 6+ years on MN.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 21/02/2016 08:59

It's the Internet. There are going to be people who don't play by the rules

Well that makes it okay then!

ArkATerre · 21/02/2016 09:00

Why would a vulnerable person start a thread specifically offering a fight?

I agree it should have gone much, much sooner.

gooseberryroolz · 21/02/2016 09:00

And TBF, Socks was expecting the gentle, chatty middle-of-the-night crowd. It wasn't like using that thread title in peak hours.

AllThatGlistensIs · 21/02/2016 09:00

Just because some people can attack others, doesn't mean other posters can't try to stop it, or diffuse a situation. Just because they can, doesn't make it right. Her distress was palpable, and very real.
