Has anyone discovered a really good cat toy?

We’ve got a 7 month old boy who’s driving us all crackers! 🤣

He just seems so full of energy he wants to burst!

He has toys already but he seems bored of them so I was wondering whether you have recommendations for a really good toy which will keep him occupied.

Obviously we play with him but we haven’t got time to play with him for hours on end so what I’m looking for is something to amuse him when I can’t.

Thanks

I was very skeptical about buying these but my two 7 year old cats have loved these since they were kittens and still play with them nearly daily

I’ve spent a small fortune on cat toys over the years, but I’m convinced my cat didn’t get the memo on what’s supposed to be fun. The local cattery has been very grateful. His absolute favourite is a simple plastic straw (we’re almost running out) he’ll stash it under doors, in shoes, inside slippers, anywhere he can find a hiding spot. He goes wild for the laser pointer, and anything with a feather, especially those wand or wire toys that flutter around like they’re alive.

Then there are the little fluffy pom-pom balls I ordered from SHEIN that come with a tiny launcher. He carries them around in his mouth like precious treasure. Every night he brings us “gifts,” and by morning they’ve migrated to every corner of the house. He’ll play football with them, hide them, hunt them, and proudly parade them around.

For all the fancy toys I’ve bought, it’s the simple things that have completely stolen his heart.

puzzle feeders and balls with freeze dried chicken breast cat treats inside. Or I pick a room, hide said treats around the room and tell him to ‘find them’ - gives me about 10 minutes peace and quiet 🤣

Those little springs, Da Bird spinning feather toy (or the cheap rip off is just as good) cat tunnels and Yeoww catnip toys are all hits in our house. But the one toy I'd take to a desert island if I was shipwrecked with my cat would be the Cat Dancer. 😀

I just today took delivery of 200 copies of Cats Don't Fetch, a card game you play with your cat. It was such fun to playtest, with the rules getting easier with every version, and lots of cat chaos. It should be up on Etsy soon for anyone mad enough to want to try it. 😆

We had so many cat toys at one time you'd have thought we still had small children. I agree with pp to rotate toys as that helps keep the novelty. However, our lively kitten's absolute favourite toy that I think she played with every day until she sadly passed at just 11 was a 'ball in a track' thing. Ours was actually free with a bag of Royal Canin cat biscuits but it's same as the Catit toys, a curving covered track with a heavish ball inside that that they push along through gaps in the cover.

I'd never imagined it would be so entertaining but she loved that track! Sometimes I'd come down in the morning and there would be bits of her fur on the rug where she'd been rolling around alongside it and even pulled the cover off sometimes and have to hunt under the sofa to find it the ball. Used to make me laugh to think of her having a whale of a time in the early hours playing with it. https://catit.co.uk/products/catit-senses-circuit?variant=55472717660537

Also, a cat tree in a window can be entertaining for them. We had one they could climb up/scratch/dangle from but also had little baskets from which they could watch out, shout out the garden birds, keep an eye out for garden interlopers. There are lots of styles but we had this one: https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/scratching_posts/medium/medium_cat_tree_height_140_cm/444113?activeVariant=444113.0

These are what my boy either likes now or liked when he was a kitten

  • Toy catnip filled blueberry pie from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home
  • Mat with electronic ball inside to pounce on
  • Electric butterfly toy - honestly I have no clue how to describe this - this a butterfly on a wire that spins around!
  • Tunnels
  • Snuffle mat and puzzle feeders
  • Kicking a ball around and springs
  • Squeaky mice that you hang from the doorframes - I have to keep an eye on my boy with these because he likes to chew the string on them
  • He likes it if I hide toys under the sofa etc for him to fish out
  • For xmas this year he's getting a new mat which you can change around so he can hide in it

My kitten loves a Lazer pen (be careful it doesn't go in he's eyes) and this cheap bit of feathers on a fishing rod. He goes mad. My other cat loves this birth that makes a noise from pets at home. They also also love tunnels.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/12/2025 21:03

Cheddar loved plastic springs!

Those tiny little grey cloth mice that look quite realistic. Get them in packs. Not clockwork ones, cats are petrified of them. We had a cat when I was little who loved chasing hazelnuts (shell on) across the floor.

Our tuxedo loves chasing chestnuts. Found 5 of them under the couch the other day!

This ball is brilliant. It races off in different directions (there’s different speed settings) and makes a sort of chirping bird/mouse sound. The attached rope is great for actually catching it.

We discovered this week that our kitten loves our disco ball. We have a small disco ball speaker that moves light around the ceiling and walls. We angled it down so it hit the floor and walls and she LOVED it. Chased the lights and jumped up the walls.

My girl loves the cat spring toys. She knows which drawer they are kept in (ready for when she’s lost another one under the sofa!).

Watching her skid about the laminate flooring after one never fails to make me smile. She’ll triumphantly carry them from one room to another as well.

Second favourite for her is my feet u dear the duvet.

Boy cat is way to cool for school - he may occasionally give something a disdainful swat, but there’s no effort involved! He’s far too busy intently at watching everything humans do, I swear he’s planning on taking over the world.

I thought of this thread just now as I follow Malcolm the Cat on Twitter (a cat, his dog brother and now their three rescued kittens) and they're currently trying to distract the younger cats from destroying the Christmas tree. Their latest new toy looks simple but very entertaining - a mat with a feather thing moving around underneath it. It looks very entertaining, even the dog joins in!

There's a short video of it at Malcolm_theCat https://x.com/i/status/2000095202099298312
