Owner died cat alone

Horrible situation.. a lady died unexpectedly in her flat and her poor cat had been with her for three days without food when it was found. I’ve phoned all the rescues and they’re full with waiting lists. We’ve spoken to the owner’s family who don’t want it. The police have taken it to the vet who can only have it short term. I have two cats who are territorial and would make its life a misery.

does anyone know what happens in these situations? It’s such a cuddle bug.

Oh, what a lovely thread! Well done @ParsnipPuree and DD!

thecatneuterer · 14/05/2025 12:05

Great update. I've lost count of the number of cats that have been thrown onto the street by relatives of deceased owners. There was one recently. The relatives turned up to take stuff from the house and put it up for sale, and literally put the cat on the street where it sat on the windowsill for weeks.

It happens all the time. They should definitely have left everything to a cat charity instead of those heartless bastards. As I said, it happens all the time.

ParsnipPuree · 14/05/2025 12:07

I almost didn’t post this as I don’t want to ruin it- but dd’s found out it has a brother, an 11yo tabby that the police couldn’t trap.. it’s being fed by neighbours but it’s still going into its home for shelter.

We’re going to wait till this lovely boy collects the cat and then gently broach the idea of its brother but it’s a big ask! We’ll offer to pay towards its keep.

They say they’re allergic to cats. Both of them?! Bastards. I’d love to see a law passed (like the one recently saying all cats have to be chipped) saying all cats have to be neutered by a certain age. Perhaps that would create room in shelters..

I don't think those people gave any reason. I don't think they gave the cat a second thought (and he was 17!!).

Mandatory and properly policed neutering would solve everything - absolutely everything.

ElixirOfLife · 14/05/2025 14:16

The cost of a pet’s housing and ongoing living costs should automatically come out of the deceased person’s estate before the family inherits a single penny.

So sad that animals are left to fend for themselves after their loving owners die.

CatChant · 14/05/2025 17:31

So glad you’ve found a home for this lovely old boy. You and your DD are wonderful people @ParsnipPuree . I really hope his tabby pal will be as lucky.

It’s very sad that the family don’t care. Heartless, money-grubbing wretches.

Lovely update!!! The boy and his mother want to take it. They have a garden flat round the corner from his original home. I know he’ll be search for his owner who died, but at least he’ll be looked after and loved. Really happy ending.

Oh WoW

Iv’e been thinking about this poor cat all day.

This is the best news ever.

well done you for not giving up ❤️

Cally62 · 14/05/2025 18:37

Hahaha just read your update @ParsnipPuree

Cats are much better in pairs.
Love the no cat to one cat and now two situation.

My dh was adamant no pets over his dead body.
We started with taking in one and now have two.
They both meow at the back door for dp to put their leads on and take them for walks.

He also feeds the birds, hedgehogs, foxes and all the neighbours cats.🐈‍⬛ 😻

Oh no, I so hope they can take both. If you hear more about the tabby and they can't let me know on private messaging. I'm not too far from you and although I already have an indoor boy and I'm not sure how he'd react, I'd give it a go. He has lived with another cat before. I can't stand the idea of an older friendly cat out on the street. Even if he just needs fostering until a shelter can take him or home can be found.

My sister adopted a clingy, loving 14 year old 3 legged cat who was taken to the SPCA by the kids when its elderly owner died. So bloody selfish, didn't even try to rehome her first. She was so sad and confused in a cage, my sister who volunteers there cracked . She only lasted another 16 months but they were happy, well fed ones.

ParsnipPuree · 14/05/2025 19:32

Oh my goodness dd is in tears. The vet have said they now need permission from the next of kin via police to release the cat and this could take a long time if it happens at all. They have told dd meanwhile the cat is being moved but will not tell her where to. She’s done her best and now nothing will come of it. What a ridiculous situation- the cat is being offered a loving home instead of being a burden on some shelter.
I feel like crying.

financialmuddle · 14/05/2025 19:39

Don't give up, OP. It's awful right now, but hopefully the nok will provide permission.

Can you escalate this with management at Medivet? It doesn't put them in a good light. There will be procedures they have to follow but a bit of common sense and discretion could also be applied.

Whyherewego · 14/05/2025 19:53

That is madness. I'm so sorry, hopefully NoK will help?

I've got a possible solution. I'm going to pm you, but I can't figure out how to do that on the app

I’ve just tried and it’s not giving me the option of pm’s. Arrgh! Could it be because I’m not a paid up member? I’m so sorry x

Could you borrow a trap to get the other cat? It worked when my cat went missing and refused to come near me (the little sod, I was heartbroken seeing her run away from me). You could ask on local lost and found pets pages to see if anyone has one.

Someone would have to wait out of sight, cooked chicken works (I got a rosti chicken from Waitrose, the lady behind the counter was so lovely when I told her what it was for).

CatChant · 14/05/2025 21:26

Oh no. This is insane.

I really hope there is a solution for the poor cat. And after all your DD’s hard work.
