Owner died cat alone

Horrible situation.. a lady died unexpectedly in her flat and her poor cat had been with her for three days without food when it was found. I’ve phoned all the rescues and they’re full with waiting lists. We’ve spoken to the owner’s family who don’t want it. The police have taken it to the vet who can only have it short term. I have two cats who are territorial and would make its life a misery.

does anyone know what happens in these situations? It’s such a cuddle bug.

Cally62 my dd is begging us to take him. Turns out he’s 15 so realistically has no chance of being rehomed. My heart wants to take him. One of my cats had FIP when he was a kitten, we were told he still has the. Iris but it’s dormant and might return with stress. He nearly died and I’m not sure I can put him through the stress of a new cat. I think about this poor baby constantly, I’ve asked literally everyone I know.

Sorry, should read my cat still has the virus but it’s dormant

I am not on social media but dd is and has posted extensively. The reality is though that he is a 15yo cat. He’s now being held by Medivet. I have no idea what they will do as all the shelters are full.

Poor baby hope you can re home him. There was a similar situation here recently posted on Facebook with a photo and story and so many people offered a home. Hope you find him somewhere poor old boy.

Charliecatpaws · 13/05/2025 22:59

I hope you have success with a rescue. We adopted a gorgeous cat 2 years ago from a local rescue (South Wales) whose owner had passed away and a neighbour managed to surrender him to the local rescue. He’s one of our 3 cats and we love him to bits 😻

Thanks, I have tried Mayhew they’re full. I will try Celia Hammond tomorrow.

I'm with Celia Hammond's. I'm afraid we can't help. You can't imagine how full we are, plus we have a virus going round so nothing is currently going in or out.

thecatneuterer · 13/05/2025 23:41

Your best bet is probably trying rescues a very long way outside London. Full list here www.catchat.org

As I said I'm with Celia Hammond's and things are so desperate I've been driving cats to rescues as far from London as Plymouth and Norfolk as everywhere anywhere near London is in crisis.

Could you possibly keep the cat (the one without a home) in a room at your home separate from your other cats?
I took in a cat a year and a half ago that was very old (15) and had been dumped outside when her owner died. She had no teeth and had to fend for herself. I took her when I found out about her. My cat absolutely hated her and there was no way of her tolerating Bonnie aka „the intruder“. I kept them separate the entire time and it worked surprisingly well even though both cats were aware of each other. Unfortunately, Bonnie had to be pts last September.

This cat is a very healthy 15year old and I don’t think I could lock it up in a room for the rest of its life. That was a lovely thing you did and I’m sure you’ll never regret it.

My dd noticed a boy (25ish) before the lady died stroking the cat and briefly spoke to him.. having put posters on trees she was hoping he would call and he did! He lives with his mum in a rented flat round the corner and they’re going to check their lease to see if cats are allowed. The only thing would be I imagine it would keep going back to its old flat and wait for its previous owner but would be better than nothing! Fingers crossed.

Ah, Fingers crossed that their lease permits cats. Who would know though if an elderly cat was taken in by them and as the cats 15 it wouldn't be forever but to just provide a living home for now would be enough.

😿🙏🙏🙏

BunfightBetty · 14/05/2025 09:20

That sounds encouraging. Even if their lease says no pets, it could be worth them asking the landlord anyway. We rented our old flat out for a while and we had a standard clause in the lease saying no pets. But one tenant asked about getting a cat and we said yes, as she was a good tenant who we k lnew was looking after the property, and we felt comfortable she wouldn’t allow the cat to damage the property (or would make good if it did). We wanted to keep the tenant and it worked out well.

I’ve already prepped dd to tell the boy to beg the landlord. I agree no one would need to know but that isn’t my call to make. I’m just praying for a miracle! Thanks all x

Lovely update!!! The boy and his mother want to take it. They have a garden flat round the corner from his original home. I know he’ll be search for his owner who died, but at least he’ll be looked after and loved. Really happy ending.

A wonderful update! @ParsnipPuree thank you and your DD for going above and beyond for this lovely cuddle bug!

redboxer321 · 14/05/2025 11:23

You've done a wonderful thing @ParsnipPuree
So glad to read it turned out as it did.

Edited to say, I hope the original owner who died left everything in her will to a cat charity and not a bean to her selfish family.
