Anyone got a tortie?

Anyone else got a tortie? Photos please! I am thinking of adopting one and I am going to meet her tomorrow.

We adopted our girl a couple of years ago, when she was about 1.

Not sure on the tortie attitude scale - she can be very aloof, but also v. affectionate (usually when she's been out in the cold and wants warming up). Loves to play but will suddenly stop part way through and decide she needs to clean her bum or something.

She once bought in a live mouse while I was on a Teams work call, that was fun, but otherwise is generally too lazy to go hunting. Seems to prefer sleeping and eating. I once joked that we'd adopted Garfield!

DH grew up around cats and says she's a weirdo, but a loveable weirdo! All cats are different I guess.

Bonnie became homeless at the age of 13 when her owner died. The neighbors fed her occasionally and she had a very hard time with untreated ear infections and no teeth.
When her previous owner‘s son took over the house after 2 years, he chased her away in a manner that made her settle on a farm in the neighborhood. By that time, she was very skinny and begging for food. The farmer‘s wife wanted to have Bonnie shot but the farmer - knowing Bonnie - made her a sleeping area in a barn and fed her.
The farm also had a cafe that I often visit and when I saw herm I askedthe farmer whether I could have her. She was the most gentle cat and though she often had diarrhea (food intolerance) and my other cat hated her (I had to keep them separate), I never regretted taking her in.
Bonnie had to be PTS last October and I miss her every day.

I can definitely recommend a lovely tortie. Mine is a little sweetie but also a massive knob at times. Wouldn’t be without her.

I am just loving these gorgeous torties people are posting but @RumNotRun Vixen and Ghostie are precious! That pink tongue. It's my favourite thing about cats, when they forget to put their little tongue back in when grooming 😂.

I rescued a Tortie/Calico cat a year ago.

She is a lovely affectionate girl and very vocal.

Also very feisty. She chases foxes out of the back garden and this morning she started growling at the bin man as if she was a dog, which was really funny to watch. Also brings in 'presents' in the house: birds, butterflies, insects...

She also wakes me up at the same time each morning by jumping on the bed and pushing my head from the pillow/sticking her nose in my face until I get up!

AHFBridport · 27/01/2025 12:53

She's the sweetest, gentlest, most timid cat we've ever had - but there was still no way I was getting my hands on that blanket...

I did some reading about colour of cat's coats for entirely another reason, though my neighbour's ginger female was a trigger. (Father ginger, mother tortie)
Cat coat colour is on the sex chromosomes, except white (don't know how that is inherited). Females have two Xs, one from each parent. (Not just cats, of course.) In development, each group of cells "decides" which X is activated, and so, cells with X from the mother can show one colour, and from the father another. They are a mosaic of the two types. Because other features are also carried on the X chromosomes, that may influence personality.
Us women can also be mosaics, but it doesn't show. Men, and male cats, only have an X chromosome from their mothers.

I remember reading about Bonnie on another thread, still brings tears to my eyes, you were so kind to her @Mia184

Thank you so much. I still miss her very much.
Incidentally a day after I buried Bonnie, a sparrowhawk tried to get into my living room where I was at the time. I live in a flat with a rooftop terrace and had the door just a tiny bit open. The sparrowhawk tried to squeeze through and then sat on the table outside for a couple of minutes about 7-8 feet away from me and looked directly at me. I occasionally have sparrowhawks and kestrels sitting on the balustrade of my terrace but they fly away if you even blink so this was very unusual. The sparrowhawk then sat on the balustrade for another 10 minutes before flying away.

I have one here and she is a rescue too. She was described as "the friendliest cat ever" and I would absolutely agree. She also has a really good awareness of if someone is in need of emotional support. She just seems to 'know'. She is not a fan of other cats or dogs but she is an absolute delight with us.

Greekcatmug · 17/02/2025 11:15

Mine is very feisty although loving. I have 2 dogs and the cat rules.

I posted about my girl under a different username last week. She hated everyone and everything except me and I adored the cantankerous madam.

Turns out she had retained ovary syndrome which is very rare, even rarer she ended up getting cancer in her ovarian tissue.

I'll miss her.

Mine was described as Calico/Tortie when I got her from a local rescue centre.

Here she is, looking rather grumpy that I interrupted her nap or maybe her surveillance of the street outside.
