Anyone else got a tortie? Photos please! I am thinking of adopting one and I am going to meet her tomorrow.

I have two, one long-haired with some Maine Coon in the mix and one short-haired. The short-haired one hated the long-haired one and also my ginger/white half Maine Coon/half Ragdoll!! I've had several torties and tortie and whites over the years and they have all had a big personality!

Yes. Rare photo of her not menacing either our other cats or small creatures from outside. Everything you’ve heard about tortitude is 100% true. They are feisty, fearless, very loving and intelligent and generally very efficient hunters too. I have no idea why coat pattern influences behaviour in this way but every tortie seems to be the same! Brilliant characters but get used to finding entrails under your table….

Aw gorgeous. I had two, sisters, Sophie and Jenny, I adored them. They were very quirky, interesting and independent. Sophie was very feminine, Jenny was adventurous. Lovely girls!

Best cat ever ❤

I fostered a tortie & adopted a tortie tabby. Both clever, opinionated & with a sense of humour.

Some really gorgeous cat pics 😻

I thought my cat was a Calico, but looking at some of these pics I think she could be a tortie? I'm not sure could someone more knowledgeable please help me out?

My girl is 8. She is snuggly and quite timid, although very nosy and always comes for a nose if we have a visitor, or a new car parks outside! Shes far too lazy to hunt 😂 I love her to pieces

What a beautiful girl! Orange, black & white is calico.

TimeForATerf · 26/01/2025 07:49

Mine died last year age 18. She was a real naughty tortie. Fiesty, a great hunter, Alpha cat, numerous fights, saw off much bigger cats and foxes. She was a witch at the vets where there were other animals.

she was also the sweetest, most affectionate little thing ever.

i miss her. Lots.

BilboBlaggin · 26/01/2025 07:51

LOL, I didn't notice the topic, just the thread title, and came on to say yes, I have a tortoise 🤣

Igmum · 26/01/2025 08:05

Here's our fabulous tortie (and yes she can jump/money scrabble her way to the top of doors).

Tortoiseshell is the name for the combination of black and ginger, and then of course there is tortie and white. Tortie and white is colloquially known as calico so the two are used interchangeably. In the UK, tortie with no white is also called calamanca.

As an aside, one genetic quirk of the coat pattern is that torties with no white have very blotchy coats with ginger and black hairs finely mixed together, but the addition of white tends to spread the black and ginger out into much more defined patches. It’s not clear why this happens.

I've only ever had tortie cats from the one I grew up with, 2 in my twenties (through to 40s) and now I have 3 of the little darlings. They are very pretty but also can be also very neurotic! I love their characters.

My current cats all have very different personalities (with the thread of tortoiseshell-ness running through them all). They've lovely, I wouldn't have another kind of cat.

@minerva7 one of my cats looks just like yours - I always thought she was a tortoiseshell and white cat.

TheMorrighan · 26/01/2025 08:12

Here is ours, she is 15, absolutely tiny and still very playful, but affectionate on her terms only. She will happily sit on the 15yo human’s lap for hours while he watches tv, no way anyone else would get that treatment. They’re twins, I think.

Our Tortie is very sweet. Has never once swiped at anyone. She's a bit timid and startles easily. She loves to be fussed and petted and gets so relaxed that she drools on your lap! Not the brightest cat I've ever known, but a sweetheart and we all love her.

WarmthAndDepth · 26/01/2025 08:15

I was fully prepared for the 'tortitude' referred to upthread, but DCat2 has been nothing but gentle, affectionate and easy-going since she was a kitten. Her non-tortie sibling, DCat2, on the other hand, seems to have got double helpings of the sass and quirks.

Yep - known (affectionately) as the twatishell in our house, has fuss on her own terms, completely ignores the men in my family but is in love with my youngest dd. Needs to be sedated if she goes to the vets, doesn't hunt as much anymore as she's getting on in years. Rules the roost with the other cats and will swipe anyone who dares to walk past HER chair! Definitely a character!

She is frequently furious but is learning to love us! Adopted about 9 months ago at 9 months old. She plays with our other cats nicely

Our tortie is just wonderful, she adores my daughter but will come to me for cuddles if she isn’t around. She loves playing with water oddly!!

Yep two. Our neighbours call them bitey cat and fat bitey cat. Are you looking at a kitten or an adult? You’d get a better sense of personality if it’s an adult. One of mine beats up the dogs. And her sister. Drinks out of our water glasses and knocks them on the floor when she’s done. She also likes to sleep in the sink!

As an aside, one genetic quirk of the coat pattern is that torties with no white have very blotchy coats with ginger and black hairs finely mixed together, but the addition of white tends to spread the black and ginger out into much more defined patches. It’s not clear why this happens.

I tried reading up on cat genetics when we had a couple of nursing mums in the rescue I foster for with a real mixed bag of kitten colours.

I learned that there is a ginger gene and a black gene which may or may not be passed on and there are also genes that add the white patches on different parts of their bodies and probably other features I can't remember.

But for these mum cats it was hard to know anything definitive as the fathers were usually unknown (although in one notable case the father of the 10 MO mum's kittens was almost certainly her brother Sad) and there could sometimes be more than one father of the kittens in a litter.

But for torties, they're almost always female with males being extremely rare and I'm sure I've read that if there is a tortie boy, he will be sterile.
