Anyone have a Donskoy?

Had my boy 8 weeks now. He's around 3. Had cats my whole life but he's so different. Follows me everywhere, LOVES human attention and is more like a dog!

A what?

SapphireSwan · 01/04/2024 23:35

I have two sphynx and the boy cat is just like yours. Maybe it is the lack of hair! Follows me about and talks all the time. He runs to the door when the bell goes and sleeps tucked in bed with his head on the pillow.

A what?

Hairless breed of cat, similar to, often mistaken for, but not a Sphynx

He prefers to hang with my 2 dogs rather than the cats on the rare occasion he's not curled up on my lap! He gets under the quilt when it's bedtime!

Poor animal.

fieldsofbutterflies · 02/04/2024 07:11

I've never heard of them before - I don't really see the appeal of hairless cats though.

One of my moggies is quite dog like (and a bit weird) Grin

Why????

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 08:26

Why????

Perhaps because this cat is an example of humans deliberately breeding a genetic abnormality that is to the detriment of the animal's health?

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 08:39

Also referred to as the Don Sphynx or Russian Hairless, the Donskoy is a medium-sized, muscular cat that has little (or no) hair due originally to a genetic mutation.

Nothing to do with people breeding hair off a cat! I thought The litter tray would be a safe space to share about my gorgeous boy.

Post a picture then if you want us to admire him!!

I like the expression on the one on the bed!!

I misread your title as Donkey 😂😂

I'm sorry but it really does have absolutely everything to do with taking a kitten with a significantly disadvantageous genetic abnormality and breeding from it. Left in the wild the hairless kitten that started this 'breed' would have died without progeny.

Why do people have such issues with hairless animals??? He's a cat who doesn't have hair!

Yes, this I'm afraid.

Same as dogs/ cats with deformed flat faces that cause health problems or dogs/ cats with short legs that cause problems. Or the Scottish fold cats where the folded ears are the outward sign of the cartilage problems they have throughout their whole body m

The genetic mutation has been harnessed and bred in rather than bred out. There are many negative mutations that cause problems

Why do people have such issues with hairless animals??? He's a cat who doesn't have hair!

Because, as you say yourself, they're a genetic mutation and unfortunately they're one that wouldn't survive without significant human intervention.

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 09:17

The Donskoy hairless gene is dominant unlike the Spyynx which is recessive. I won't post about him again.

I can't speak for other people but personally I believe that breeding cats (or dogs) for extreme traits (Brachycephalic heads, hairlessness, stunted limbs, folded ears etc.) because some people think that it looks 'cute' or 'fashionable' or 'different' is an absolute disgrace as these give no benefit to the animal but do come with significant health risks.
I don't believe that animals with genetic disorders should be bred from and at least one European Government (Netherlands) seems to agree with me as they have banned the practice.

So OP why did you want a hairless cat?

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 09:32

I've always loved hairless animals. I have no idea why I just do.

Your boy is just beautiful, and he sounds so sweet!

AnOpinionInTheHand · 02/04/2024 09:34

Anyone would think you’d posted in aibu. Can everyone just calm down and let her chat about her cat?

he sounds adorable - a hairless cat wouldn’t be my choice but he sounds like he’s got a great character

Pixiedust1234 · 02/04/2024 09:38

I have to agree with the others BUT he's a rescue so OP had nothing to do with him being on this earth.

He looks gorgeous in your photo @Notfeelinghunkydory , does he respond to his name yet or just when you wave a snuggly warm blanket?

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 09:38

He really is the biggest sweetheart. I guess I'm terrible for owning him though.

The Litter Tray seems like a completely appropriate place to advocate for cats against the evils humans inflict on them.
