Had my boy 8 weeks now. He's around 3. Had cats my whole life but he's so different. Follows me everywhere, LOVES human attention and is more like a dog!

I'm sorry you've had such a hard time on here OP.It usually is a friendly place to be.
I can understand why people would feel like this about breeding, but you didn't cause it
I'm really glad he is a loving cat, so many aren't, including my own !
I would love to have a cat that follows me around.
Thank you for rescuing him, and enjoy your boy.He looks very sweet.

AssassinsEyebrow · 02/04/2024 09:44

Well I'd like to hear more about him op!

Is he soft? I've heard hairless breeds often have a velvety down, is that true?

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/04/2024 09:45

Oh he’s lovely. Is that down on his skin?

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 09:46

He is a velour Donsky so has a very fine down all over his body and feels like baby skin. His tail is covered in very short, wiry hair. His ears and nose have short, soft hair.

PilgorTheGoat · 02/04/2024 09:47

OP rehomed him, she didn’t buy him from a breeder. Would PPs prefer that he was put to sleep?

I have a dog-like cat too OP although mine is a moggie. He follows me when I go for a walk but if we get too far from home he howls to be carried until he knows where he is again!

MadamVastra · 02/04/2024 09:47

Buy you get slaughtered. Rescue you get slaughtered. 🤔

How lovely, welcoming and supportive this board is 😊

SingingSands · 02/04/2024 09:49

He is beautiful. He is loved. The end.

IClaudine · 02/04/2024 09:49

He is lovely. Do you have to do anything to help protect his skin? Is he allowed outside?

Francisflute · 02/04/2024 09:49

AnOpinionInTheHand · 02/04/2024 09:34

Anyone would think you’d posted in aibu. Can everyone just calm down and let her chat about her cat?

he sounds adorable - a hairless cat wouldn’t be my choice but he sounds like he’s got a great character

No, there's a lot.more to breeding in genetic mutations than servicing 'i just like them'. And humans with allergies wanting cats isn't a good reason to approve of this practice or perpetuate it. It isn't all about what humans want. So no, you're not going to get 'isnt he sweet' from a lot of cat lovers.

TextureSeeker · 02/04/2024 09:51

We did. He was the best cat I have ever known. We all adored him. You could scoop him up like a baby whenever you liked and he would just melt into you, his cuddles were unmatched. When the kids were small they would spend hours playing fetch with him and he slept nuzzled into my dds shoulder every night. He really was the most loving little cat we have ever had. I'm tearing up now just thinking of him and it is 5 years since he passed away, we were all heartbroken for weeks. He was really very special.

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 09:53

He is allowed out. He's popped out then ran back in since I've had him as obviously the weather hasn't been great. In summer he will have baby sun cream on if the back door is going to be open.

@TextureSeeker he really has stolen my heart in such a short space of time.

I can't speak for other people but personally I believe that breeding cats (or dogs) for extreme traits (Brachycephalic heads, hairlessness, stunted limbs, folded ears etc.) because some people think that it looks 'cute' or 'fashionable' or 'different' is an absolute disgrace as these give no benefit to the animal but do come with significant health risks.
I don't believe that animals with genetic disorders should be bred from and at least one European Government (Netherlands) seems to agree with me as they have banned the practice.

So OP why did you want a hairless cat?

I agree with this. Poor animal.

This is what happens when humans commercialize animals to meet their own ( human) wants though. What the human wants comes before the animal. The human will put something as trivial as an aesthetic above the animal’s wellbeing.

Nomorenomores · 02/04/2024 09:59

Have the posters on here saying how lovely their hairless cat was because he slept under a duvet, sleeps cuddled into you and melts into you during cuddles, ever considered that that is because the cat is cold? Those all sound like heat seeking behaviours to me.

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 10:07

Of course they seek heat. And he gets it!

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 10:07

It sounds like people bred this mutation because they liked the ‘cuddles’ it gave them from a cat seeking warmth, because they bred it to be cold. Breeding a defect to gain human satisfaction from the defect isn’t really on.

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 10:15

I doubt his want for cuddles will decrease in summer. I would be getting hate too if I put a jumper on him.

I don't know. We have a Canadian Sphynx now and she doesn't want anything to do with any of us most of the time. I'd get scratched to shit if I tried to scoop her up for a cuddle 😂 She is very much her own woman and prefers observing us all from a distance. She'd be disgusted at the thought of sharing a bed with us. If she is supposed to seek heat from us someone forget to tell her that. We love her but she really isn't into people.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/04/2024 10:21

@Notfeelinghunkydory
Several people have stated your cat is a rescue - but I can only see from your posts that he's about three years old.

Clearly taking on an adult cat is different to buying a kitten from a breeder.
So how has your cat ended up with you? What's his story?

Nomorenomores · 02/04/2024 10:30

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 10:15

If he had fur he would not need a jumper, of course.

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 10:30

I had taken my dog to the vets and overheard the receptionist talking about a cat needing rehoming I asked them about him and asked them to pass my details to his owner. She called me that afternoon. She's terminally ill. I picked him up that same evening.

OP posts:
SanFranBear · 02/04/2024 10:35

I think he's beautiful - such interesting markings!

And I'm glad he's gone to a loving home given his previous owner can no longer care for them.. he sounds the sort to become very attached to his owners so it's good to hear he's settled so well given everything!

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 10:38

The day I brought him home I expected him to be hiding for a while....nope! He was strutting about like he'd always been here.

OP posts:
takemeawayagain · 02/04/2024 11:33

While I don't agree with hairless cats anymore than flat faced dogs or cats this one was a rescue.
I'd probably avoid encouraging other people that hairless cats were really great or a great thing to have though.

fieldsofbutterflies · 02/04/2024 12:43

Notfeelinghunkydory · 02/04/2024 09:38

He really is the biggest sweetheart. I guess I'm terrible for owning him though.

Nobody has called you terrible.

You asked why people didn't like them and they told you.

I wouldn’t get a hairless cat in the same way I wouldn’t get a Persian or a Scottish fold.
