So worried about my cat

LittleLillie · 09/01/2023 22:52

I’ve posted about my 11 month cat before, name changed for this as I’ve posted about her on Facebook tonight and don’t want linking to other posts.

I inherited her from a relative a couple of months ago, had her booked in to be spayed but she came into season at the end of November and it was postponed, she was on heat mid December also. Spay re-booked for Wednesday this week.

About a week ago, all of her mammary glands became enlarged, I had a huge panic that she had got out (and back in!) without me noticing while she was on heat and was pregnant. Went to the vets Friday who said that he could not feel a pregnancy and that by her presentation it was almost as though she was lactating and he would say she had recently given birth. Absolutely not the case, she has not been out the house and there are definitely no kittens here. Plus she has last been on heat less than a month ago, that wouldn’t happen if she was pregnant surely? Anyway, she was well in herself and vet said we would continue with the plan to spay on Wednesday.

She has gone off her food this weekend, last ate properly on Saturday evening and spent most of yesterday asleep. She was sick today, a small amount of yellow bile, so I’ve gone back to the vets tonight. The new vet checked her over and took her temperature, all seemed fine. She had never seen anything like the swelling before, and consulted the vet that we saw on Friday who said the same and also that he thought that the swelling had increased. All glands seem affected.

We are back tomorrow morning for sedation, bloods and a full scan/X-ray but I am so worried about my little friend and can’t stop crying. It sounds silly but I’m terrified this is my last night with her.

Shes eaten some dreamies tonight, no food and I can’t give her anything now because of the sedation tomorrow. She’s just not herself and won’t even come up to bed for a cuddle.

I don’t know if anyone’s got any advice, or experienced similar? I’m really scared 😞

Oh I know it's so scary when they are I'll, especially as they can't tell you what's wrong.

Has the vet mentioned phantom pregnancy at all? I'm not an expert but that was my first thought.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 09/01/2023 22:57

Hey OP, it's so worrying when they have to go to the vet. Has phantom pregnancy been ruled out?
I'm no vet but could you wait a few more weeks for the spay? It's quite close to her heat I would think. I know for dogs we tend to wait til 8 weeks after.
Sending you all the positivity for her 💕

LittleLillie · 09/01/2023 22:58

No he hasn’t, I wondered about that too? I’ve been Googling (I know, I know!) and there’s something that called Feline Mammary Hyperplasia that would fit with the swelling but not explain the lack of appetite and being sick, unless there are two separate things going on.

She’s really not my friend tonight, I don’t think she liked the thermometer or anti-sickness injection

No experience of this but just wanted to send you and your little one the best of wishes and let you know I’m keeping everything crossed that all will be well.

LittleLillie · 09/01/2023 23:00

@ANiceBigCupOfTea thank you x I did ask about cancelling the spay and they said if everything looks ok on the scans they’ll do it while she’s under tomorrow to save her going under again and that she should be fine.

I used to say I wasn’t a cat person, I’ve always had dogs, but this little fluff ball has stolen my heart.

I’ve promised her all the Dreamies in the world and the best spot on my bed every night if she gets herself better

Clarich007 · 10/01/2023 09:54

Hi LittleLillie. That must be so worrying for you. I know how it feels when my cat is ill. It's all I can think about.
Not much advice from me, but years ago our dog had a phantom pregnancy. She was spayed and all was well.
Hope your little fluff ball will be ok soon💐💐

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/01/2023 11:19

Good luck for today

LittleLillie · 10/01/2023 14:40

Thank you everyone! I’ve just got the call to pick her up, she has got Feline Mammary Hyperplasia! She’s got to have a course of injections and then go back to be spayed when the swelling has gone.

I am so relieved I could cry

Sorry, just seen your thread when the drama is (mostly) all over. So pleased she’s got a diagnosis and it’s treatable, and you’ve got her back home. She’s a beautiful little girl.

Not many people realise it, but Mumsnet posts count as a legally binding contract. So you best be getting all those dreamies and that prime spot on the bed ready! X

😂 she slept on my pillow last night - I think she read this post!

She has eaten this morning, had a big drink and is eyeing up the dreamies as I type. She’s definitely on the mend!x

That’s what we all want to hear. Quite right, too! X

LittleLillie · 12/01/2023 21:39

She’s gone downhill tonight.

I went upstairs at 7pm and she was breathing rapidly and not herself. I’ve taken her to the vets and they’re keeping her in because they’re not happy with her breathing.

Please keep my baby in your thoughts tonight.

Wolfiefan · 12/01/2023 21:42

Oh no! I’m so very sorry to hear of your update. Everything crossed they can stabilise her and she will be home soon.

RumNotRun · 12/01/2023 21:45

Fingers and paws crossed for you both.

DomesticShortHair · 12/01/2023 21:53

She’s definitely in my thoughts. Fingers are firmly crossed for her. X

LittleLillie · 12/01/2023 21:55

Thank you.

Shes in an oxygen tent, on a drip and being given morphine and I’ve got to call at 11pm for an update. I am terrified.
