Aged 15 and two months. He was on top form.last night and came up for his usual moither and stroke at about 6.15am then padded off downstairs.

He was asleep on the mat by his cat flap when we came downstairs. He is at the vet but no news on the possible cause. The vet didn't think he'd been dead for very long - not much more than an hour. DH and DD have cried and DS cried on the phone. I can't cry.

The house seems very empty. I have washed up his bowls and will take his food to the pet food bank later.

He won't be on the arm of my chair tonight, or on the bed later. The cat flap hasn't banged shut all day.

RIP Darling Boy

So sorry. It's just the worst thing. FlowersFlowers

Willowkins · 07/01/2023 13:47

I'm so sorry. It must have been such a shock to find him like that.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 07/01/2023 13:55

I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers My dog died suddenly at home and the feeling of not having said a proper goodbye was awful; but it was a comfort that he had died in a place he loved and I was at least spared having to make the awful decision of euthanasia further down the line. It sounds as though your cat had a peaceful end. It will hurt and hurt but as time passes you'll increasingly remember the happy times.

CatServant2020 · 07/01/2023 13:57

I'm so sorry for the loss of your handsome boy, it won't comfort you now but at least it would have been quick and he wouldn't have suffered.

You probably haven't cried yet as you'll be in shock. something stupid will probably set you off, like finding a toy under the sofa.

Please let us know his name and tell us more about him if you want, he sounds like a real character.

RIP darling boy 😢😢

tulips27 · 07/01/2023 13:59

So sorry. It looks like he had a lovely life, look at him looking all regal on his chaise longue in the pic. 😢

Antst · 07/01/2023 14:01

Oh no. I'm so sorry for you. I wish I could say something that would make you feel better but more than 25 years later, I still find myself thinking about my childhood cat nearly every day. Let yourself think about that absence and how important he was to you.

Nanny67 · 07/01/2023 14:01

Night night beautiful boy xx

NewNameForXmas · 07/01/2023 14:01

So sorry for your loss - whst a handsome boy.

Nongatron · 07/01/2023 14:02

So sorry what a beautiful boy he was. It’s so hard when a beloved pet dies 😢

Bossyboo · 07/01/2023 14:03

What a beautiful cat ❤️ sorry for your loss Daffodil

RosesAndHellebores · 07/01/2023 14:15

Yes he was beautiful. He was soft and plush and very sociable.

His mother was a cream BSH show Queen. She and her dd escaped in season and got knocked up by a Tom in Richmond Park. They had very assorted litters totalling 7 cats: 1 black, 2 ginger, 3 Calico and our boy. We first met him when he was 10 days old.

He lost many lives: an inch of tail was amputated because he caught it on some barbed wire during the first week he was allowed out.

We abandoned his collar because he kept coming home sans collar.

He got poisoned aged 2 and we nearly lost him but he pulled through after a stomach pump and three nights at the vet on a drip.

He ate lillies aged about 8, cue another stomach pump.

At about 11 we noticed a little chunk gone from his right ear.

At 12 he got arthritis of the hip but did very well on metacam.

When dd was at uni I had to send her a daily photograph.

We all thought he was so well looked after and always bounced back so well that he would live to at least 20.

He was a fantastic mouser. Once when I was quite unwell he brought in a mouse and laid it at my side. If DH or I were ever ill, he would lie by our side as if to protect us.

Hark at me trilling on.

I'm so sorry.
He was a very handsome boy.

Antst · 07/01/2023 14:23

@RosesAndHellebores, he sounds like a real character. At least you can remind yourself that you gave him a great life and he obviously loved you back.

sm40 · 07/01/2023 14:25

Bless. He died at home probably where he felt comfortable and he was obviously happy until the end. I was discussing this last night and I am hoping my 14 year old cat goes like this. Had a very traumatic drawn out week long saga with my last cat and DH had to go to the end at the vets as I can't cope with that bit. My old cat was distressed and ill for a week and I wished I had called it earlier.
today will feel empty and everywhere you look you'll see them. It does get better.
Take care xx

RosesAndHellebores · 07/01/2023 14:31

Thank you for all your messages. I am on the sofa wondering what to do really. I have put the mat he died on in the bin. I should go and buy a new one, and one for the front porch.

So so Sorry

Beautiful Boy now waiting at Rainbow Bridge.
Take Care OP.

Antst · 07/01/2023 14:42

@RosesAndHellebores, I'd go and do that. Think of another couple of errands too. Not supermarket shopping. That's too ordinary. Maybe go to a garden store and look around. Keep busy to distract yourself.

There's nothing wrong with a good wallow but there'll be time for that tonight and it might be easier if you can do it when the family is around (eating dinner, etc). For now, distract yourself by getting out of the house.

It's lovely to hear more about him, OP.

Omgwhatthehell · 07/01/2023 14:49

He was beautiful and sounds like a right character ❤️

Theraffarian · 07/01/2023 15:11

You have them so long , that I think we all start to feel they are invincible. Each one is magically perfect in their own way , just as each successor fills a gap but is never a replacement for the ones that went before . Sending love as it’s a horribly sad time , but remember to acknowledge all the wonderful days came before.

EarlyYearsMe · 07/01/2023 15:15

Oh I’m so sorry for the loss of your lovely friend. Cats make the house feel like a home.
All the best to you and your family xx

I'm so sorry. It sounds like he was much loved and had a good long life. At least it seems to have been quick. I remember when I lost my cat, I felt like there was a big hole in our lives that couldn't be filled. We miss them terribly when they go.
