Rescue cat refusing all comforts

We've had our rescue 4 months now, he's less jumpy but still quiet and taking his time with us. He comes for head bumps now and let's us stroke him. He sleeps in the floor, I've bought him a radiator bed as he loves heart, I've bought him a cave bed for night-time, I've bought him a donut bed. I'd love to see him lying in comfort and enjoying the softness but he's not interested. He loves lying in my bed when I'm there so he likes soft things. Is there any way I can encourage him to use the expensive and lovely beds I've got him? I've tried putting treats in the bed but he grabs the treat then jumps out. Dh has banned me from buying anything else for him. I'd love to see him curled up in any one of the beautiful comfy beds I've bought him. Hate seeing him on the cold hard floor every day. Any tips?

I have an exciting update. Literally the day after I started this thread, calls down in the morning to see the cat IN HIS CAVE BED!! it's getting colder so I wonder if he worked out that being in the bed was warmer. Or it might have been the fact that the night before he very proudly brought in a mouse through his flap and ate it's head whilst I screamed the entire street down. He must've known I was upset with him and decided to try and earn MAJOR brownie points....

My girl cat likes her igloo bed when it's next to the radiator but we'd had it for some time before she decided it was worth investing.
Boy cat really likes his electric heated pad, but only if it's on top of the dining room table.
Otherwise it's our bed or a cushion on the chair in the study.
I love all the contrary cat pictures!

My cat has 3 beds that he won't sleep in, he does have his own armchair that he will use though and he likes the kitchen floor as it is filed and any box that arrives is immediately his to destroy to his hearts content

Our cat's favourites are the doormat, the hedge, the trampoline, the dogs bed, and any boxes, including a cereal box!

Put your absolute favourite jumper on it, the one you wear everywhere.
It’ll be claimed in a heartbeat and you’ll be gutted you can’t bring yourself to move your kitty so cute and fast asleep on it ;)

It sounds as though you are doing a brilliant job providing a loving entertaining home. Our rescues hid in the dining room for what felt like weeks, both sleeping on hard chairs. It took a very long time for them to approve of us. Now they have a 6th sense for whichever chair we're about to sit in, have studiously ignored offerings of cat beds, toys, posts and generally rule the place like benign fluffy dictators.

Cats are creepy weirdos

Shannith · 07/11/2021 19:58

Bless you. Cardboard box.

If it's a black cat but something black and squareish literally anywhere and it will sleep on it. Within 20 mins. Strange but true cat fact.

They hate cat beds. Part of the joy of cat ownership is that they are incredibly cheap to run. It's why we end up with more than one Grin

This one likes bins. Even on peoples heads. She slept in the box the turkey came in for about 3 months.

I read somewhere that cats prefer to survey their fiefdoms from above.

You may need a high, wide, secure shelf to put the igloo.

One of these, wrapped in a fleece might work.

Had cats all my life. They loved cardboard boxes, inside the wardrobe,if the door was left open. The clean laundry basket. Outlast house,we have our dogs an old sofa, the cats curled up on there with them.never had cat beds. We have 2 dogs now, they have beds on the floor in our bedroom, I'll give you one guess where they actually sleep!

MyHairNeedsASnip · 07/11/2021 20:24

You need another cat.

Cat 2 will come in and sleep in the cat bed.

Cat 1 will be insanely jealous and start to get in the cat bed first.

Motorina · 08/11/2021 08:39

Get a dog. The cat will sleep on it. Everyone will be happy.

KevinKat deigns only to alight on humans. He appears to despise any other places/purchases arranged for his comfort. He was an abandoned, starving stray before landing on his large furry feet. He's an excellent tyrant.
